1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
Goals for tonight

•To give families a clearer and more detailed
understanding of Montpellier Primary
School’s intention regarding a BYOD Program
for 2018.

•To ensure that any questions people have
tonight are not left unanswered.

21 Century Education –
what does it look like?

1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
What is BYOD/BYOT?
“Bring your own device/technology (BYOD/BYOT) is an
educational development and supplementary school technology
resourcing model, where the home and school collaborate in
arranging for students’ 24/7/365 use of their own digital
technologies…” – Lee & Levins 2012
 ● “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – students bring in their
own device either purchased or leaded directly by
     families.
This may include:
 ● Any device
 ● Any device with set features, e.g. software or
applications, as defined by the school
 ● A specified device as defined by the school.” – Victorian
     Department of Education.
1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
Rationale – what is the purpose?
To enhance and amplify learning by
providing a sustainable “Anytime,
Anywhere” learning environment.

•We highly value engaging and rich learning
experiences through effective technology integration
•We wish to promote and advance our students as
learners through the integration of digital technology
•We want our students to be more adept at
communicating, creating, collaborating and critical
thinking.
•We believe that a BYOD approach will empower
students and their growth as learners
1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
Rationale – what is the purpose?
● Our BYOD program will allow students to
engage in curriculum that does not
  restrict learning.
● The use of a personal device to support
learning adds further evidence to support
  the importance that Montpellier Primary
School places on preparing our students
for success both inside and outside of the
  school setting.
● 1 – 1 is about learning, not Technology.
1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
Why are we moving into
this space?
● We want our students to utilise their own
  technology to encourage personalised learning.
● Learning should not be restricted to the
  classroom. Mobile technology allows for
anywhere, anytime learning to take place.
● A BYOD framework allows for more technology,
more often, to be used by students to support
  their learning.
● Financially, a BYOD Framework is more viable
than other models. Government funding for
school owned devices does not allow for 1:1
  allocation.
1-1 iPad BYOD Proposal 2018 (Year 3 & 4) - Parent Information Session - Montpellier Primary School
Why are we moving into
this space?
● Through having a BYOD and not a BYOT
model, a greater sense of consistency
  occurs with students having similar
devices to use as a learning tool.

● Evidence based research tells us that
students are needing Digital Based skills
and capabilities that will support them in
  the developed world.
BYOD is…
● Already happening. Students are using
their own devices at home to
  collaborate, share, learn and extend.
● About diminishing the home-school
  divide.
● Open communication, collaboration and
  support. This is anywhere, anytime
  learning….
● Empowering parents and families to
assist their children in a technology rich
  world.
BYOD is…
● About learning and teaching in a world
  that is already networked and
  connected.
● About success. Allowing students to
demonstrate what learning they do in
  school, outside of school
● AND… it is about TRUST! Through using
personal devices there needs to be a
common understanding of trust and clear
  expectations by ALL stakeholders.
Teaching and Learning will never
be the same again….
Through integrating 1:1 BYOD technology effectively, it allows
teachers to radically change the way in which content is delivered,
shared, discussed and assessed. Teachers can now more than ever
foster;
● Anywhere, anytime Learning. Learning is no longer restricted to
    the classroom setting.
● The teacher no longer becomes the sole deliverer of information.
Students have access to the ‘web’ and its educational content
when and where they need it.
● Teachers can personalise and differentiate learning to suit the
many learning styles that our students have. More importantly
however, teachers can support students to personalise their own
    learning.
● The use of online learning spaces and environments can allow
teachers to give feedback more effectively and can be more
    personalised.
We know that today’s
students are…

● More self-directed
● Better equipped to capture information
● More reliant on feedback from peers
● More include to collaborate
● More orientated to being their own
    ‘modes of production’
2010/11 Department of
 Education iPads for Learning Trial
“DET’s 2011 iPads for Learning – In Their Hands trial placed 650
iPads in ten primary, secondary and special schools. The trial
investigated the capacity of iPads to…
 ● Increase independent and self-initiated learning among students
 ● Increase students motivation and active engagement in learning
 ● Improve teachers capacity to plan for and meet individual
     student needs
 ● Improve student learning outcomes
 ● Extend students’ learning beyond the classroom
 ● Improve parental engagement in learning and strengthen
     home-school links
…and found that effective use of iPads can lead to all of these
outcomes.”
What positive impact is seen
 via a BYOD 1:1 Program?
● Increased creativity
● Increased engagement
● Increased collaboration
● Increased independence
● Mobile learning opportunities
● Individualised learning opportunities
● Greater personalisation and ownership
● Differentiation of content delivery
● 24/7 access to learning… resources, tasks, tools,
  etc…
● Networked learning between school and home
● The publishing of work for greater audiences
What about the challenges
that will potentially arise?
● Damaged devices, both BYOD and school
  owned, and the cost/s associated?
● Inappropriate device misuse
● Classroom management in a 1:1 environment
● Ongoing, effective, integration
● The ongoing development of an effective
  school wide digital learning culture
● Support technologies to complement the 1:1
  program
● Teacher professional learning
What would we like 2018 to
look like?

● 1:1 iPad BYOD Program years 3 & 4 only
● Apple iPad Technology BYOD model
● Connected technology using presentation
  LED screen in learning spaces
● Use of Google Classrooms and Google Apps
  for Education
● A suite of apps to support educational
  content
Access to iPads
● We understand that a BYOD program may place financial
stress on families. For families who this affects, we will
have a bank of devices available which will provide
access for students at school to the technology. These
devices will be available for use during school hours, but
  will not be sent home.

● Where possible our BYOD program is about harnessing
current technologies already at home and not having to
purchase a new device. If you have an iPad at home
which meets our minimum requirements (Mark to speak
more about) we encourage that device to be brought to
  school.
Montpellier Primary
 School WiFi
● All students will have their devices connected to our
  school WiFi network.
● This network is filtered and restricted using the
Department of Education internet filtering. (Social
  media, YouTube etc)
● We will continue to educate students about
appropriate online behaviour at all times and not
simply restrict access as much as possible because
  we can.
Why did we choose iPads?
The iPad was selected as a device to support our program due to the
following:
 ● Mobility and size
 ● Ease of use
 ● Hardware and reliability, battery life – full day at school
 ● Applications offered (apps) – 7540,000 – 1,700,000 dedicated to
education. Initially we will focus on learning to use 3-4 really well)
 ● Ability to be used online and offline situations
 ● Versatility – it’s an eReader, camera, movie film production device,
writing and authoring tool, a programing and coding device, a
music creation machine, an animation studio, a research assistant,
     presentation tool…
 ● Can be a second, third, or fourth teacher (iTunesU, Khan Academy
     etc.)
 ● Feedback from families and students last year in our survey – most
     common device in family homes
What type of learning will
students do on the iPads?
● At Montpellier we place a heavy focus on our students engaging
in curriculum and quality tasks which promote deep learning,
critical thinking and creativity. We want our students to be
producers and not consumer and through their creativity,
complete set tasks in ways that would not be possible without
    the use of technology.
● The introduction of the Victorian Curriculum - Digital
Technologies Curriculum will also support the use of the 1:1
iPads. Victoria now is the only State/Territory that is explicitly
teaching coding, programming and computer concepts for Prep
    to Year 6.
● The iPad is incredibly mobile. Teachers in Art, LOTE, STEM, PE,
and Music will have access to students having their own 1:1
    devices.
Clear expectations of students
regarding the use and care of
their devices.
This will be outlined in the Digital Learning Acceptable Use
Agreement. We will expect students to;
● Use their devices in a responsible and appropriate
  manner
● Bring their device to school fully charged
● Adhere to the school’s Acceptable Use Policy
● Report any behaviour that is not in line with the
school’s Digital Learning Acceptable Use Agreement
● Place their device in a designated area within the
classroom when the devices are not in use to help
protect their device and their work
Clear expectations of students
regarding the use and care of
their devices.
● Report any damage that may have occurred to their
  teacher immediately
● Use the internet in a safe and responsible manner
● Report any inappropriate or offensive material; to their
  teacher immediately
● Respect and look after all devices, including their own,
  other students’ and the school’s.
● Not use their devices to record sound, moving or
photograph images or video of any person unless
otherwise asked to by a teacher, and ONLY with the
  persons permission.
Key actions and follow up

review the program, determine successes and challenges and
    implement changes accordingly.
● Set Date as part of review for student survey of 1:1 BYOD
Program (Late Term 3. 2018) – survey all students in years 3/4.
Collect and analyse data and share with review panel.
Develop and implement actions as required.
● Opportunity for feedback, questions and concerns to be
ongoing and encourage you to speak with myself, Mark
    O’Donnell, or your child’s teacher.
Personal devices are an important
learning tool. Research shows that there
are many benefits to your child having a
personal device. A sense of ownership
creates a greater connection to using the
device for learning, and students can
learn anywhere and at any time in a way
that suits their need.

Purpose & Goals of a BYOD 1-1
Program
Through increased access to technology, students can leverage learning
tools that are highly differentiated, collaborative and experiential. The
precise application of technology and quality instruction can enhance
learning. Moreover, with increased connectivity between school life,
private life and social life, portable devices and high speed broadband and
NBN open up the possibility for new models of instruction outside of the
traditional classroom setting.

✓ The purpose of 1-to-1 learning is to create confident, flexible,
  self-directed, lifelong learners.

✓ At the heart of good 1-to-1 learning is equity to ensure that all students
have equal access to technology-rich experiences, and simplicity to
ensure that it is easy to manage and sustain.

✓ At Montpellier Primary School our goal is to develop a sustainable, long
term plan where one to one 1-1 technology is used to enhance student
  learning.
Theoretical models of
teaching & learning
To ensure the successful implementation of iPads into an
educational setting it is important that your educators are
confident and capable in using iPads to enhance their teaching
practice.
Two models, SAMR and TPACK can be aligned to instructional
models to assist with deeper conversations ensuring a considered
approach to using technology for both surface learning and deeper
learning across curriculum areas.
The SAMR Model

ICT Coordinator
Why was the iPad the
    device of choice?
If we had our version of a perfect world, it would be to allow
parents to choose their own device for their children to use at
school however this has limitations. From extensive research and
school visits, the ICT team came to the conclusion that the iPad is
well suited to our learning environment. It was chosen for the
following benefits:
✓ The enterprise Wi-Fi network that all Government schools use
contains security and internet filtering that requires devices to
access it in certain ways. Some devices are far easier than
others to get working on our network. iPads are perhaps the
easiest - a certificate is installed on your child’s device by their
teacher on the first day and they can connect straight to the
school network without issue from then on. Cheaper brands of
tablets run software based on Google’s Android operating
system which currently do not support the same process to
    occur.
✓ Compact size, ease of transportability and design means it can
be used in almost any learning situation.
✓ The long battery life will allow it to be used all day at school
  without recharging.

✓ The robustness and durability of the device and stability of the
  software and operating system (iOS).

✓ The Apple AppStore has a wide selection of educational apps
with Apple recognised as the leading application platform in
education, with new apps becoming available daily.

✓ A common tool for each student that would meet most of their
day to day technology needs and that would help engage
  students in learning 24/7.

✓ A device that would be easy to use and easy to provide
technical support. iPads are relatively trouble free, and when
there is an issue, teachers can quickly solve it 99 times out of
  100. This means we can run a 1:1 program which has virtually
no impact on the limited time our school has with a computer
technician each week. Equivalent laptop programs require
significant support from school based techs.
✓ Other technology, like the ability to wirelessly mirror iPads to
the TVs in our classrooms, is not available on other platforms in a
way that will work within our Wi-Fi network.

✓ We choose our tech based on maximising the learning that
happens in our classroom. If everyone has the same device that
works in the same way, it connects easily to the network, and it
rarely has any operating issues, then the tech can slip into the
background and our teachers can maintain the learning focus of
  each lesson.
iPad provision - type of device
                        • Any iPad that is capable of running ios11 or
higher is highly recommended by the working
party. This will future-proof for a number of
years and provide ready access to the school
                            network and apple services.

                        • A device that cannot support ios 11 updates
can be used (especially in the
                            implementation phase, however be aware
that there may be limitations on the apps
that can be downloaded for use in class – for
                            example, SWIFT Playground for coding
                            requires ios 10 or higher)

                        • 16 GB will be fine given available access to
cloud features for saving large files, however
32GB would be an advantage (particularly for
storing large files such as Claymation and
                            movie-making software)

                        • Results of parent / student surveys provided
data that many families already own such a
device or were intending to update in near
                            future.
iPad provision – retailers, insurance
                         and support
 ● Currently investigating various retailers and providers so
that our community will be offered the best support and
     pricing available, including, but not limited to;

 ● JBHI education portal (purchase, warranty and support).
*as an example can offer $411 on a 16GB iPad5
     gen…currently advertised for $469 elsewhere.

 ● Grangeburn Education (purchase, warranty / insurance
     and hardware support).

 ● Edunet (purchase, warranty / insurance and hardware
     support)

 ● Buzz Tech (insurance and hardware support) *as an
example, for $99 they offer a cover, screen protector and
maximum $59 excess to repair any damage.

 ● ITZ computers (hardware support)
Program Costs….

The cost to families will vary depending on
the:
▪ iPad model selected
▪ Type of warranty or insurance selected
  (Optional)
▪ Type of accessories e.g. covers, protectors
  etc.
A strong and protective cover will prove to
be one of your greatest investments
providing protection from the daily wear
and tear of usage in an educational setting.
Technical Support…

In the event of accidental damage, faults or issues with the iPad,
technical support will be provided by the supplier of the device.

Accidental iPad Damage and / or warranty claims
iPads remain the property of families and students. The school can
direct you to a preferred supplier for damages and repairs. Any
warranty related work needs to be directed back to the
supplier. Parents will need to pursue their own insurance for the
device, whether it is through your Home Contents Insurance, or through
specific insurance you seek out for the iPad. Loss or breakage will not
 be covered by the school.
Most software issues are covered by Apple within a 24-month period.

Network and Software issues with iPad

The school will provide access to a weekly school based technician who
will assist Students experiencing any software issues with their iPad
(i.e. lack of network connectivity etc.). The technician will then refer
students onto the appropriate support (such as apple support) if
 required.
Acceptable Use Agreement…
Montpellier Primary School, with our values of respect,
responsibility and integrity, places a high value on the
development and maintenance of positive, healthy and respectful
relationships and a supportive environment for all members of the
                         school community.

All students from Grades 3 & 4 are invited to be part of the BYOD iPad
Program. All students and a parent/carer are required to read, understand and
sign an Acceptable Use Agreement at the commencement of each school year.
This governs the requirements and expectations under which students use the
school computers, access the network and internet. This is a standard
expectation, not only from Montpellier Primary School but also the
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).
Cyber Safety…
Montpellier Primary School believes that teaching
cyber safety and responsible online behaviour is
essential and is best taught in partnership between
home and school.
Students are spending increasing amounts of time
online, learning and collaborating. To be safe online
and to gain the greatest benefit from the
opportunities provided through an online
environment, students need to do the right thing by
themselves and others online.
The school promotes the values of respect and
responsibility, expecting students to behave
appropriately online.
What will 2018 look like?
▶ Digital Citizenship and Cyber Safety program.
     ▶ Acceptable Use Policy.
     ▶ Formal instruction and guidance.
▶ Security
     ▶ digital
     ▶ physical
▶ App management.
▶ Parents are in charge of the apps on the device.
▶ App recommendations (free where possible) *a list would be sent home asap with a recommended selection
▶ Increased communication.
▶ Publishing and collaboration in a shared online space.
▶ Inclusion of parents in the feedback process.
▶ Students presenting learning in different ways.
▶ Expectations of use.
     ▶ Integrated across curriculum.
▶ Use where appropriate (SAMR model of teaching & learning)
▶ By the end of grade six students will develop an independence in choosing appropriate tools to learn and to
         share their learning.

Trade or Transform?
Is digital technology trading or transforming learning?
Meaning if the same outcome is achieved with digital technology as it is without
technology (trading) then it is better to stick with more traditional learning
  methods.
The aim of digital technology is to transform learning.
From Dr. Kristy Goodwin’s research this is what students use digital technology
  for at home…
▶ 41% is passive consumption. Eg. Youtube/movies etc
▶ 37% is gaming
▶ 14% is communicating. Eg. social media
▶ 3% is spent creating
Kids love creating. This is where a 1:1 program can be leveraged at school to
spend a greater percentage of time creating.
Trade or Transform?

Case Study:
▶ Inquiry topic focusing on learning about different countries
▶ The teacher contacted a grandparent who lived in Japan.
▶ Instead of using traditional teaching methods the grandparent showed the
students his local community via skype
▶ Students then created an iMovie about what they have learnt using a green
screen to digitally insert a background of Japan while they presented to the
    camera
Example from the classroom
▶ Explanation Writing - using Google Docs to publish written piece and Explain
    Everything to explain their understanding
▶ Multiplication and Division strategies - created a portfolio of Multiplication
and Division strategies to support learning during Fluid Maths topics
