Alaska Airlines Pentathlon T his year’s 2019 Alaska Airlines pentathlon promises to be the highlight of the Big C Relays. Watch as six young men and women vie for the title by competing in the high jump, shot put, 100m, 300m hurdles and 800m. During the last Alaska Airlines pentathlon, held in April 2016 and before the collapse of the Dome, Thunder Mountain’s Naomi Welling captured the third victory of her high school career, dominating the 300m hurdles and 800 to grasp the title. Chugiak’s Ty Jordan made a come-from-behind win, with strong performances in the 100m and 300m hur- dles. It wasn’t until the last event, though, the 800m, that he stole the competition. His 1:57.26 time eclipsed the second-place runner by more than 17 seconds, earning him valuable points that pushed him into the winning title. Holland America Line’s Fastest Alaskan 100m H ailey Williams was only a freshman when the Dome collapsed in January 2017, so she had not yet experienced the excitement that is the Big C Relays. The budding Delta Junction sprinter was already work- ing hard to become faster – she has a coach who trains her from afar and she flies into Anchorage for training whenever she can. She spent her winter traveling to in- door meets throughout the country to gain the exposure and experience needed to become a Division I collegiate runner, which is her goal. This weekend she is the girl to watch. The 16-year-old Delta Junction High School runner holds an 11.95 100-meter PR she set at New Balance Na- Hailey Williams tionals last June and a 24.81 200 meter she ran in Kodiak at the 2018 Brian Young Invitational. If she can keep that speed, she may be able to capture the Big C meet record of 12.41, set in 2015 by Anchorage Christian School’s Tanner Ealum. “I’m really excited – coming from Delta, it’s really hard even for a small team to have the opportunity to compete in these big events,” Williams said. “Just knowing that we can have a meet similar to state, to get those times in and see what we need to do with our training plan, is so helpful for this time of year. Hailey Williams of Delta Junction High School outsprints competitors at the 2018 Division II ASAA State Championships. Williams, a junior, is the favorite in this year’s Fastest Alaskan 100-meter sprint. She will be chasing Tanner Ealum’s (at right) Big C Relays record of 12.41, set in 2015. On the boys’ side, East Anchorage senior Colton Herman is posting the fastest times thus far this season. He won the Division 1 State title in the 200 meters last year, with a 22.21; and has an 11.00 100-meter PR from the 2018 Region IV championships. In the Fastest Alaskan race, he will be chasing South Anchorage sprinter Brett Morman’s 11.05, set in 2016. The Fastest Alaskan race consists of preliminaries, in which the fastest 12 times will move on to semifinals. From there, the field is winnowed to six. Both races take place Friday, April 5. The next afternoon, stay tuned as the champi- onship races, which are at 3:20 p.m. for girls and 3:30 p.m. for boys. No matter if records fall or remain, the chance to compete at such a level this early in the season is not only a valuable training opportunity for the runners. “I’m just excited to compete against everyone because everyone who is there wants to do their best,” Williams said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to go down and compete.” Holland America Line’s Fastest Alaskan Fastest Alaskan records Preliminaries Semifinals Finals GIRLS: Tanner Ealum 12.41 Anchorage Friday, April 5 Friday, April 5 Saturday, April 6 Christian School, 2015 1:40 p.m. 7 p.m. 3:20 p.m. Girls Girls Girls BOYS: Brett Morman, 11.05 South 2:40 p.m. 7:10 p.m. 3:30 p.m. Anchorage, 2016 Boys Boys Boys 2019 Big C Relays • 9
Soloy Construction 4 x Alaskan Mile T here are not many opportunities for the boys and girls on a team to work together, but the Soloy Construction 4 x Alaskan Mile will do just that. Be sure to stick around Saturday to watch as two boys and two girls join forces to run the fastest combined four miles-plus (four laps on the Dome track is slightly longer than a mile). Some teams will even join forces with other teams to form their own mixed teams so everyone gets a chance to compete. Also in the co-ed category is a new relay called the Swedish Medley, which features 100-200-300-400-meter legs, with the girls taking on legs 1 and 3, and the boys running legs 2 and 4. Look for local Here’s what Skinny Raven’s John Clark had to say about Prosser: high school talent to challenge the field as well. “Laird Prosser was one of the best of the many great runners I have been privileged to coach. But our relationship went far beyond just helping him run faster than anyone ever had at Dimond High, where I coached for 20 years. It was the way he did it, the way he conducted himself and the way we supported each other even after his running career was over. Laird epitomized all the things I wish I could have been when I was a young athlete.” This year’s lineup includes some standout Alaska runners — most notably Boise State’s Allie Ostrander, who is just off a 10,000-meter record-setting time at the Stanford Invitational. Ostrander’s third- place finish and time of 32:06.71 set a new school and Mountain West record and puts her 10th in the NCAA record books for the event. Big C featured athlete: Manteo Mitchell Olympic silver medalist, World and U.S. gold sprinter comes to Alaska to meet the athletes T he Big C Relays tries to not only offer a great com- petitive event, but also feature big names in the sport of track & field. These are the athletes young people look up to and aspire to become themselves one day – whether it is a dream or a real possibility. This year, we are excited to welcome back Manteo Mitchell, an Olympic silver medalist and 400-meter specialist who not only will meet and greet our athletes, but also race an exhibition 300-meter indoor race with other elite-level athletes. Mitchell was a guest athlete at the 2015 Big C Relays, and said he is excited to be coming back to Alaska. “It was such a fun event,” he said of his first Big C experience – and first time ever in Alaska. “There were tons of kids everywhere taking part in all the races and field events. It was cool to watch it all take place. “ The Shelby, N.C., native now lives in Asheville, N.C., where he trains full time in the sport. In North Carolina, the weather is more forgiving so most of his training can take place outdoors. Still, he said, he was surprised to see an indoor track of this size in Anchorage. “To say I was surprised is an understatement for sure,” he said. “Though I’d much rather run outside (I love the heat), to have this facility in place for areas like Alaska is just amazing. You guys are definitely blessed to have this.” The Dome will indeed be a happening place over the weekend. Mitchell will be running the 300 meters against Champ Page from Ohio State and Mason Rhodes (Team USA Paralympic Guide), as well as some college runners in the area who may opt in. “I think it’s important to put your best product on display,” he said. Professional sprinters “These athletes need the exposure. That’s how I got into the sport. Not Manteo Mitchell (pictured many people can say they warmed up and ran on the same track as an above and at right), Champ international icon.
