William Stukeley Church of England Primary School Newsletter: Term 3 (2019/20) In our happy, caring and safe school, our teachers will inspire learning, support us to achieve success and create lifelong values, characteristics and ambitions Welcome Back Happy New Year! I hope that everyone is in good health and the Christmas holidays provided some opportunity for rest, relaxation and fun. It’s great to see the children have returned to school ready to work hard and take advantage of all that will be offered to them this coming term; a curriculum letter will be sent home very soon, highlighting the learning for the coming weeks. Staff We would like to publically and warmly welcome Miss Verney to the school. Chair of Governors On behalf of the Governors, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. As we wave goodbye to last year and celebrate our achievements giving thanks to all those who supported and helped our school, we now move forward to embrace 2020 full of hope, dream and ambition. Values Education: Appreciation The word "appreciation" means to be thankful and express admiration, approval, or gratitude. It also means to grow or appreciate in value. We have begun conversations with our children on how, as you appreciate life, and the people around us, you become more valuable—both to yourself and others. You’re perhaps wondering why there’s a black dot on the page. It just serves to illustrate how although it’s only a small black dot, our eye is drawn to it. Sometimes it’s easier to notice what is wrong in other people and in things that happen in the world, rather than noticing the good things. Often there are many more stories about disasters and grief, than there are about the good things that happen, but we know that this is not a true reflection of the world around us. The good news is, like the white part surrounding the dot, there is a lot more ‘good’… sometimes we just need to look for it, to appreciate it! Reminders Please may we remind parents/carers DO NOT PARK ON THE YELLOW BOXED AREA outside the school gates. Also, access through the staff car park is prohibited – please use the pathways to enter the school grounds. Thank you. Starting School in September 2020 Children born between 01/09/2015 & 31/08/2016 are due to start school in September 2020. Applications must be made online at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/schooladmissions, or by contacting the Education Team on 01522 782030 to request a paper application form or to make a telephone application. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 15th January 2020. Lincolnshire county council are consulting on changes to their admissions policy for 2021. Full information can be found at https://pre.lincolnshire.gov.uk/school-admissions/school-admissions-policies Chinese New Year - Saturday 25th January (Year of the Rat) Children in Ducks, Robins, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers and Doves classes are having an enrichment day on Monday 27th January, so the children can explore another culture. They will learn about the story behind the animals and some cultural similarities and differences between our two cultures. We will also be tasting some Chinese food! It has always been a fun and exciting day where the children get to explore how other people celebrate in different ways. Children are to come into school in their school uniform but they can, if they wish, wear an animal mask of one of the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar. Thank you for your support.
William Stukeley Church of England Primary School Newsletter: Term 3 (2019/20) Charity Collections Thank you for your continued support, last term we raised £143.18 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Aldi’s Kit for Schools A huge thank you to all parents and carers who helped to fill our poster with stickers. This has been sent to Aldi and we will be receiving a school sports kit during the Spring Term, containing many goodies including balls, bibs, cones, egg and spoon kits, batons and more! We have also been entered into their prize draw for 20 chances to win £20,000 to build a health legacy at our school. William Stukeley Celebration Day On Wednesday 20th November we a fascinating Collective Worship to celebrate a person of historical importance to us – ‘William Stukeley’. A group of children, who had worked with Mrs Rowley, had researched this famous son of Holbeach and presented what they had discovered to the rest of the school. As part of this Collective Worship, the current President of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, Mr Tom Grimes, displayed a large original print of William Stukeley and presented the school with a catalogue of William Stukeley’s art from an exhibition they had held at Asycoughfee Hall. The local Arts organisation, ‘Transported’, commissioned Electric Egg to create artwork to adorn the side of FreshLinc trailers. This was part of the’ Creative People and Places’ project, which promotes art within the community. Steve Hatton, one of the artists from Electric Egg, chose the work of William Stukeley as one of the subjects. He recreated Stukeley’s amazing artwork of Stonehenge, which is now exhibited on a FreshLinc lorry. Neil Baker and Steven Hatton also kindly printed the art for the school. Two of FreshLinc drivers kindly presented this art for them to keep. We would like to thank Neil Baker and Steve Hatton for providing the artwork. In addition, Ashley Holland (from FreshLinc) for organising the lorry and trailer for the whole school to experience and appreciate the art on such a huge scale. We would also like to say a huge thank you to Iain Braid, Vice-chair of the school governors, for initiating and liaising throughout the whole project. Wild Woodcraft Stone Age trip The children in Owls, Swans and Herons had an amazing day out at Wild Woodcraft near Wragby, taking part in a range of Stone Age activities including building shelters, making fires as well as cooking and eating fish. All the children took part with such enthusiasm and have not stopped talking about their experiences from the day. A big thank you to all the volunteer helpers who came with us that helped to make the day so enjoyable. Falcons & Eagles ‘Wartime Christmas’ The children in Falcons and Eagles had a wonderful time, experiencing a ‘Wartime Christmas’, at Metheringham airbase, on Wednesday 4th December. They looked absolutely fantastic in their wartime costumes and enjoyed a range of Christmas activities including, making ‘ration cookies’, designing Christmas cards, creating decorations and dancing. The day ended with a lovely Christmas story, ‘Christmas Truce - The Place Where Peace Was Found’. The children were, as always, a credit to the school.
William Stukeley Church of England Primary School Newsletter: Term 3 (2019/20) Falcons & Eagles - 2019 Church Schools’ Carol Service, Lincoln Cathedral On Tuesday 10th December, children in Falcons and Eagles went to Lincoln Cathedral to be part of the annual Church Schools’ Christmas Service. All involved had a lovely time; the children sang beautifully. What a wonderful way to get into the Christmas mood! Sport2Day Competition On Wednesday 11th December, some children from Y3, Y4 and Y5 took part in the Sport2Day New Age Kurling competition. The event was held at the Holbeach Hub and involved a selection of other schools from the surrounding area. Our children enjoyed the morning, displaying lots of energy and enthusiasm. We are very proud to say that our school finished in third place & received a bronze award! Well done to all who took part. East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre Children in Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a creative day out at East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre. We used our creative skills learnt this term during our Design Technology sessions during the different activities and made the most of the opportunity to make beautiful painted tiles. The opportunity to then visit the exhibitions in the excellent museum was also a highlight of the day. The day was kindly funded by Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage and we would like to thank Sue and Nicky from LAH for a great day! EYFS & KS1 Christmas Production ‘Higgledy Piggledy Nativity’ The children’s Nativity this year was truly amazing. We had all 140 children involved and each child worked hard to learn their words, dances and the songs. The singing this year was brilliant and the children looked amazing in their costumes. A big thank you to parents that provided the children’s costumes, your support is greatly appreciated. We are really proud of the children and seeing the Christmas story brought to life by such young people really captures the meaning of Christmas. Reception and Key Stage One Christmas Party The day began with great excitement as the children entered into the hall that had been transformed into a Winter Wonderland with their own snow themed decorations. The children watched The Snowman film and then headed back to classes to make melted snowmen biscuits and prepare their Christingles for the Church service. The morning was filled with crafting activities and we also got to enjoy a hot chocolate with our snowmen biscuits. We had a special visit from Santa and each child received a present. They played lots of traditional party games like pass the parcel, musical statues, build a snowman and the ever popular pass through the hoop! The day was very successful and children were extremely excited. We would like to express a big thank you to the Friends of the School for helping to make the Snowman Party Day so special by providing funding for activities, special treats, their time to make things and to decorate the hall. Holbeach Lantern Parade Children in Falcons and Eagles had the opportunity to take part in the Holbeach Lantern Parade. All of the children made their own beautiful lanterns, with the support of artists Lou and Nadya, in school and on the Friday evening, paraded around Holbeach with them lit up. The children had a fantastic time making them and those that took part with their parents had an amazing experience.
William Stukeley Church of England Primary School Newsletter: Term 3 (2019/20) Aladdin Staff Pantomime On Thursday 19th December, all the children finished the Christmas term off with a surprise staff pantomime of Aladdin. A group of eighteen willing volunteers made up the entire cast including the prop lady, Mrs Ward, and the sound technician, Mr Cuthbertson. The children gladly booed and cheered along as favourite characters that we all know and love were brought to life on stage. The show opened with a scene that allowed the children to hear Abanazer, played by Mrs Underwood, declare his evil plot to take over the world. Abanazer needed some help from the voice of darkness, played by Mr Emery, to work out how to summon the Genie of the lamp, played by Mrs Church. Abanazer already had the slave of the ring, played by Mrs Thorpe, to help him but the slave was not as powerful as the Genie. They all shouted as the evil Abanazer plotted to get the lamp from Aladdin, played by Mrs Twell, and they cheered when Aladdin defeated Abanazer’s plot to take over the world. The bumbling police officers Chop and Suey, played by Miss Peacher and Mrs Coote, were no help to Abanazer’s plans but they brought plenty of comical laughter to the show! Washee, Mrs Glenn, and Widow Twanky, Mrs Cuthbertson, were there to support Aladdin on his journey to find true love but there were a few bumpy rides along the way. Princess Blossom, Mrs Biggs, had to convince her Emperor father, Mrs Marshall, that marrying Aladdin was okay as long as he was a prince. Washee found love with one of Princess Blossom’s ladies in waiting, Daisy, played by Miss Robinson, and Rose, played by Miss Brothwell, was a bridesmaid to them both. Special thanks go to the site manager, Mr Sampson and the vice chair of governors, Mr Braid for their excellent portrayal of market stallholders chasing Aladdin through the streets of Peking and to Mr Munn for stepping in at the last minute and being the most spectacular Chancellor to the Emperor. Choir Events The Stukeley Choir have been on tour once again this term. They have performed at the school Christmas fayre, Holbeach Christmas Fayre, Mayfield Nursing Home and Patchett Lodge. They have done a fabulous job at performing at all venues. Well done Choir! Remembrance Day On Sunday 10th November, children from our school took part in the Remembrance Day parade. They represented our school by walking with members of staff, Brownies, Rainbows, Cubs, Scouts or Mini Police. It was a fantastic turn out and the children really did themselves and us proud. Kaedi and Toby laid the wreath at the memorial and did a great job. Thank you to the parents who also walked with us, or dropped their children off, so that they could recognise this occasion. On Monday 11th November some of our School Councillors represented our school and took part in the two-minute silence at the War Memorial in Holbeach. Letters for the office If you have any reply slips or monies to be sent to the office, for your convenience we have a post box located outside the main entrance. When sending or bringing payments into school please ensure that the envelope is labelled and securely sealed; please ensure you send the exact amount as it is difficult for us to always give change. May we respectfully ask that deadlines for the return of slips etc. are adhered to; children can often be disappointed if not and it can create additional work for the office staff.
William Stukeley Church of England Primary School Newsletter: Term 3 (2019/20) Absences / Medical Appointments If your child is absent from school for any reason, please ensure you phone the school to advise – you can leave a message on our answerphone, stating the reason for absence. Please remember that all school absences must be followed up in writing. School records will be marked ‘unauthorised’ if we have not received confirmation in writing regarding an absence. Please also be reminded that, following ‘Health Protection Agency’ guidelines and school policy, children must stay off school for 48 hours following any vomiting or diarrhoea. Winter Weather Should the school need to close due to the weather, we will text all parents who are registered with ParentMail, however, you can also find out via BBC Lincolnshire or Heart FM Radio stations. If you cannot get your child/children to school, then please telephone and leave a message on the absence line explaining your difficulty. Uniform / Lost Property To enable us to return a lost item to its owner please ensure that all items of uniform and property are clearly labelled with your child’s name. As the weather is getting colder please also ensure that you send your child to school with a coat. Please also be reminded, our new ‘Pop Up Shop’ (free uniform shop) is now up and running. Lost, un-named clothing will be stored in school for 6 weeks then, once a term, displayed outside on rails - for another opportunity to claim items. After this time, we will assume the garments are to be donated to the uniform shop. Lost property will still be checked regularly and named items returned. Uniform is also available to purchase online via our supplier Nationwide School Uniforms. https://www.nationwideschooluniforms.co.uk/ You can choose to have your order either delivered to school FREE OF CHARGE or directly to your home address (£4.50 delivery charge). The deadline for orders this month is Tuesday 28th January, for free delivery to school, week commencing Monday 3rd February. Lunchtimes If ordering school meals for your child, please ensure that it is an option that your child likes and will enjoy. Please do not send a packed lunch for your child if you have ordered a school meal – if you are unsure which days you have ordered, you can check on www.willoughby- foods.co.uk or by contacting the office. Please do not send products containing nuts as we have children in school with nut allergies. Thank you for your continued support. Safety We often advise the children, but thought parents/carers should be made aware, it has brought to our attention that there are posts circulating on social media regarding drugs being marketed to appear as ‘pink teddy bear’ sweets / pills.
