ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 INFORMATION BOOKLET 2019 ENGLISH READING PROGRAMME Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. ~ Maya Angelou In NationalHigh Jakarta School, we strive to push our students to thirst for learning, to learn for the sake of learning, to be passionate about knowing all we can about the world we live in. As we work with you to encourage students to learn, we would like to ask for your support as we continue to develop a Reading Program that we hope encourages our students to explore the world through books. Scholastic LitPro It is our pleasure to inform you that NationalHigh Jakarta School will be working with the Scholastic Literacy Pro reading program for Primary and Lower Secondary students. LitPro is a two-fold program where students are required to read with the objective of individualizing reading programs to suit each student’s needs. It is a reading exercise for students where their reading comprehension skills are developed from their current abilities to more proficient levels, consulting with the teacher only if needed. Apart from reading the suggested materials, the students will also need to evaluate their skills with a set of multiple-choice questions. The passages and the questions will increase in difficulty as the child progresses in the program. NationalHigh will be working closely with Scholastic with the objective of supporting the varying reading comprehension abilities. The Library will acquire most of the books needed for the program for our students to borrow as needed. With the modification to the current reading programme, purchasing books in our recommended reading list is no longer mandatory. In its place, all primary school students are subscribed to Scholastic LitPro as part of their English Learning Programme with the school. Reading is critical in developing communication and life skills. Therefore, students will have protected reading time every week to monitor their progress in the program. For Our More Avid Readers For our more avid readers who want to read books other than what’s in the program, the English Department will continue to provide suggested books for your child’s grade level and interests. The list is based on Mensa* for Kids’ Excellence in Reading Programme and recommended reading lists from schools all over the world. English Learning Facilitators have come together to create a reading list designed to inspire and interest students in each level. These books are not our end-goals but rather our starting points as we nudge our children back to the enjoyment of the written word. The benefits of reading are just too good to ignore: mental stimulation, stress reduction, knowledge, vocabulary expansion, memory improvement, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus and concentration, better writing skills, tranquility and free entertainment. Each grade level has the opportunity to taste different kinds of books through our Recommended Book Lists. This exposes our students to different writing styles about different subjects from an array of recognized children's book writers. This will be their smorgasbord from which we hope they find a favourite writer or two (or three or more!) or perhaps a favored genre or book series that will entice them to read more! Books from the class list are NOT MANDATORY reading but highly recommended for avid readers and families who would like to develop their personal libraries. We encourage you to take advantage of the supplementary list as you choose additional books for your child to read. We believe that there is really no such thing as too many books on our shelves, only more opportunities to learn and develop our thinking. We would like our students to take advantage of all these and we hope to have you on board with us as we guide them towards this goal. The beauty of reading is not lost as most people claim, it is waiting for us to find it again. Mensa* is an organization founded in England in 1946 and dedicated to the development of human intelligence. Members of this organization all have IQs that belong to the top 2% of the population.
