2021 WIMBLEDON DAY 6 MEN’S NOTES Saturday 3 July 3rd Round – Bottom Half No. 2 Daniil Medvedev (RUS) v No. 32 Marin Cilic (CRO) No. 4 Alexander Zverev (GER) v No. 31 Taylor Fritz (USA) No. 6 Roger Federer (SUI) v No. 29 Cameron Norrie (GBR) No. 7 Matteo Berrettini (ITA) v Aljaz Bedene (SLO) No. 14 Hubert Hurkacz (POL) v Alexander Bublik (KAZ) No. 16 Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) v Nick Kyrgios (AUS) No. 23 Lorenzo Sonego (ITA) v James Duckworth (AUS) Ilya Ivashka (BLR) v Jordan Thompson (AUS) On court today… • In the 2nd match on Centre Court today, Cameron Norrie will aim to become just the 2nd British player to defeat Roger Federer at Wimbledon – and the first since 2001, when Tim Henman defeated the future 8-time champion in the quarterfinals. Federer has won all 8 of his subsequent matches against British players here, and is also on a 12-match winning streak against British players at Tour-level, having not lost to a British player since falling to Andy Murray in the semifinals at the 2013 Australian Open. Norrie is through to the 3rd round for the 3rd straight Grand Slam event, having lost to Rafael Nadal in the 3rd round at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year – and he will hope that he fares better against the other 20-time Grand Slam men’s singles champion today. • No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev has made steady progress so far during the first week here with victories over Jan- Lennard Struff and Carlos Alcaraz, but he is likely to face his sternest challenge yet when he plays former Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic in the 3rd match on No. 1 Court today. A victory for Medvedev would see him become the 7th Russian man to complete a set of round of 16 appearances at the 4 Grand Slam tournaments, and the 2nd to do so within the space of 2 days after Andrey Rublev achieved the feat on Friday. Cilic is aiming to reach the last 16 here for the 7th time, but he will need to end an 11-match losing streak against Top 5 opposition if he is to do so. • Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nick Kyrgios will contest the 2nd match on No. 1 Court today, with Auger-Aliassime bidding to match the achievement of his compatriot Denis Shapovalov, who reached the round of 16 here for the first time after defeating Andy Murray on Friday evening. Auger-Aliassime would become the 6th Canadian man in history to reach the last 16 here if he wins today. Kyrgios has experience at this stage of the competition, having reached the last 16 at Wimbledon on 3 occasions – but his last appearance in the round of 16 here came in 2016. Having played well in his first matches for more than 4 months this week, Kyrgios will need to be on top form again this afternoon if he is to defeat the Canadian. • Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Bublik are first up on Court 12 today, with both looking to progress to the last 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time. Bublik won the pair’s only previous Tour-level meeting, but Hurkacz had the measure of Bublik when they were juniors – aged just 4 months older than Bublik, the Pole won both of their both of their meetings at junior-level in 2014-15. Hurkacz and Bublik have also both previously received support from the Grand Slam Development Fund’s International Player Grand Slam Grant programme – Hurkacz received $25,000 in 2018 while Bublik received $25,000 in 2019.
