An opportunity to spend time with our people during an authentic overnight Marae Stay onsite at Tamaki Maori Village TIME DAY ONE PROGRAMME 4.00pm Arrive at Tamaki Maori Village. Here you will meet your guide. Participate in the whakatau (welcome) and perform the traditional welcome (hongi) – the pressing of noses. 4.30pm MARAE PROTOCOLS Your guide will provide an introduction to the Marae. Learn the importance of the Marae, the customs and protocols we follow, and why. You will also learn about the roles of men, women and children. 5.30pm Make your beds, and prepare your sleeping quarters. This is a time for informal Q&A with your guide and your host, and a time to get ready for the Tamaki Maori Village evening experience ahead. Once you have everything you need for the evening, you will have a chance to lock your bags and valuables away in a specially provided locked store room adjacent to your sleeping quarters. 6.00pm Your guide is now going to teach you a short waiata (song) which you will be performing later on this evening. 6.20pm Your guide will take you to the Powhiri area – out the front of Tamaki Maori Village. 6.30pm TAMAKI MAORI VILLAGE EVENING EXPERIENCE Tamaki Maori Village evening experience begins. You will be involved in the traditional welcome ceremony (powhiri) before you are invited into the Pre-European Maori Village. 6.40pm Enter the Village as it comes alive to the sights, sounds and activity of days gone by, including facial tattooing, weaving, carving and demonstrations on how the food was cooked and preserved many years ago. See, touch, take time and talk to our people as you wander through our village – you may even be invited to take part in stick games and warrior training!
TIME DAY ONE PROGRAMME CONTINUED... 7.00pm Witness the earth being carefully scraped away from the hangi pit by your selected chief, to reveal baskets laden with your sumptuous mouth watering hangi feast which has been cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. 7.10pm At the heart of the village, enter our ancestral Meeting House, and relax as our family entertain you with a powerful cultural performance, including action songs, poi, stick games and the world famous ‘haka’ (Maori War Dance). 7.40pm The sharing of food is an important part of the Maori custom, so we now invite you to join us for the traditional hangi buffet feast, followed by the dessert buffet. 8.45pm The poroporoaki signals the official end to the Tamaki Maori Village Evening experience. There will be waiata (songs), and whaikorero (speeches). You will now be invited up to perform your waiata with your guide that you were taught earlier, before the selected chiefs of the evening perform the haka! 8.55pm All guests are now invited to leave the wharekai and re-board their buses back into town. You will remain with your guide. 9.00pm STORY TELLING – A TIME OF REFLECTION & LEARNING Your guide will now take you to an open camp-fire, set beside the native Tawa Forest. As you enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows by the camp fire, your guide will tell you stories of old, myth, legend and you will also learn about the great migration to Aotearoa. You will also hear stories of early Maori Settlement, the arrival of European to New Zealand and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi right through to present day, and the renaissance of a very proud people - Maori. You will have a chance to ask questions. Your guide will close the evening with a song and a karakia (prayer). 10.15pm Your guide will take you back to your sleeping quarters where you will have time to prepare for bed. Those that wish to shower this evening can do so. There will also be an opportunity to shower in the morning. 10.30pm – SLEEP TIME 10.45pm
TIME DAY TWO PROGRAMME... 7.00am WAKE UP. Time to get up and tidy up your sleeping area and the Marae. 7.15am Those that wish to shower this morning can do so. 7.45am Pack bags and load them into your bus. 8.00am BREAKFAST TIME 8.30am You will be required to assist with clearing away your tables and dishes. 9.00am Your guide will now provide you with some final words of farewell before it’s time to depart Tamaki Maori Village for your next destination. HALF DAY PROGRAMME – OPTIONAL TIME PROGRAMME 9.00am Introduction & Welcome 9.05am History of Maori, Migration & Arrival to New Zealand Tribal Structure and whanaungatanga Maori Protocols, Te Reo Maori Language & Pronunciation 10.15am Morning Tea Home Made Scones with Jam and Cream Fruit Tea, Coffee and water 10.30am Interactive Workshops Weaving Carving & Ta Moko Weaponry & Ancient Warfare Haka & Poi 12.15pm Conclusion and departure

SPECIAL CONDITIONS QUOTE & INCLUSIONS: TBC PAYMENT POLICY: Full payment is required 7 days prior to visit FOC POLICY FOR ACCOMPANYING TOUR LEADERS/ESCORTS: 1 FOC Tour Leader/Escort for every 20 full paying passengers For School Groups, One Teacher FOC for every 10 students SAFETY POLICY: Visitors should not wander out of the Tamaki Maori Village area All children under the age of 15 years are required to be under guidance at all times OVERNIGHT EMERGENCIES: The host will stay overnight and will have access to phone and vehicle for all emergencies. Guides hold full valid First Aid Certification and there is a fully stocked First Aid Kit available onsite for any medical attention WHAT IS SUPPLIED: Mattress, Linen, Duvet, Towel, Overnight Host, Dinner and Breakfast Overnight Marae facilities include heat pumps for winter and air-conditioning for summer There are 2 overnight facilities, so if required males can sleep in one quarters, and females in another There are separate ablution blocks for both Male and Female WHAT TO BRING: A change of clothes, sleep ware, toiletries and personal items. If wet or cold, please bring jacket and raincoat. Sensible footwear, camera and good walking shoes.
