Showalter MIDDLE SCHOOL 4628 S. 144th St. Tukwila, WA 98168 Phone: 206-901-7800 Fax: 206-901-7807 Attendance: 206-901-7803 Principal: Brett Christopher Asst. Principal: Cindi Perez Principal’s Message The Showalter staff are busy preparing for the return to in-person hybrid teaching starting with 6th grade students who have selected onsite instruction with last names starting A-L (A Group) on Thursday, April 15th and those with last names starting with M-Z (B Group) on Friday the 16th. When we return from the break, the week of April 12-16, students will be working primarily asynchronously on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students will check in with their homeroom teachers at their regular start time of 9:50 a.m. Students will have asynchronous work to complete these three days while teachers use this time to prepare their classrooms and receive training and support as they transition to teaching remote and in-person simultaneously. As noted above, 6th grade students will be onsite Thursday (A Group) and Friday (B Group) that week. 7th and 8th grade students will work synchronously on those days, following the new hybrid learning model with the 11:00 a.m homeroom start. On April 19th, Group A (A-L) students will attend four periods, Homeroom starting at 11:00 a.m. & Periods 1, 2, 3 on Mondays. Then on Tuesdays, they will attend Homeroom & Periods 4, 5, 6. Student groups will alternate attendance on Wednesdays, with an 11:00 a.m. start time for homeroom followed by periods 1-6. Group A (A-L) students will be onsite Wednesday April 21st. Group B (M-Z) students will be onsite Wednesday April 28th. On April 22nd, Group B (M-Z) students will attend four periods, Homeroom starting at 11:00 a.m. & Periods 1, 2, 3 on Thursdays. Then on Fridays, they will attend Homeroom & Periods 4, 5, 6. Student groups will alternate attendance on Wednesdays. Students should not arrive on campus prior to 10:45 a.m. All students, remote or in-person, will have 55 minute class periods and 5 minute passing times, with the exception of Wednesdays when they will see all of their teachers for 25 minutes. Their teachers will either be in-building, teaching students in-person while teaching to the students who are remote, or they may have a staff member supervising their classroom while their teacher is teaching from a remote location. Either way, students will be taught by their current teacher. To help you prepare for the transition to onsite instruction, we have included important information for students and parents to know prior to returning to the building. Please make sure you are reading through the expectations and communicating our expectations to your student prior to returning to in-person learning. The highest priority is to complete the daily health screening on Skyward or on a district provided attestation card, prior to leaving your home. When on campus, students will be required to wear a mask at all times, and maintain a 6 ft. distance from others as much as possible. Our safety guidelines and protocols are in place and designed to keep everyone safe and help move us closer to fully returning to in-person learning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Showalter at 206-901-7800. We are excited to see our students very soon! Brett Christopher

In order to prepare for the first days back in the building, we ask that you review the protocols that are in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in schools. Face Coverings: To help protect others and slow community spread of COVID-19, face coverings are to be worn when at school. Students will wear face coverings on the bus, as they exit a vehicle at drop off, as they walk onto the Showalter campus, and inside the building. Face coverings include cloth face masks, and surgical masks. Masks with one-way valves or vents are not approved forms of face coverings. Face coverings should be made of multiple layers and cover both mouth and nose. Remember to wash cloth face masks and wear a fresh face covering daily. Health Screenings: Health Screenings are used to monitor COVID-19 related symptoms and possible exposure to COVID-19. Screenings are to be completed daily on Skyward or s district Health Screening attestation card for students prior to arriving at school. We recommend completing this process prior to leaving home each morning. If the answer is yes to any of the questions on the Health Screening, your student is to stay home. Contact Showalter to report the absence for hybrid learning. Students may then join their classes online if they are able. If a yes answer is provided and the student arrives at school, the student will be sent to the covid isolation room and parent/guardian will be contacted. Covid Isolation Room: We have created a COVID-19 isolation room for students who arrive with or develop
COVID-19 symptoms at school. Symptoms of COVID-19 include: cough, headache, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever of 100.4 or higher, sense of having a fever, sore throat, chills, new loss of taste or smell, muscle or body aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, congestion/running nose not related to allergies, and/or unusual fatigue. When a student is brought to the covid isolation room, parents/guardians will be contacted to pick up the student from school. TSD will follow the DOH guidelines to determine next steps for the student and communicate them with the parent/guardian. Nutritional Services: Meals will not be served at Showalter. Breakfast and lunch are provided and will be available for pick up at the end of the school day as students exit the building at 2:30 am. Student Arrival: Hybrid learning students will arrive to Showalter by bus, by walking, or by being dropped off. Students should not arrive on campus until 10:45 am when staff will open the entry doors. Students will use the Commons entry door on the west side of the building, adjacent to the bus loop. As students enter, staff will confirm that they have completed a Health Screening for that day. Students are to wear masks as they enter the building and go directly to their Homeroom class. Families who are dropping off or picking up students must use the main parking lot entrance located on the east side of the school, adjacent to the district office. Students will be dropped off on the east side of the school and then walk around to the west side entrance. Only buses are allowed to enter the west parking area.
Parent/Guardian Drop Off: Students are to arrive in the east lot no earlier than 10:45am. Students are expected to wear a mask as they exit your vehicle. Please use the inside lane for stopping and dropping off. The outside lane should be kept moving to allow cars to exit efficiently. Bus Drop Off: Students riding the bus will put on their masks while waiting for the bus and continue wearing their masks throughout the day until they are dropped off at the end of the day. Upon arrival at Showalter, students will remain seated on the bus until their bus is waived in by a staff door monitor to enter. Walkers: Students walking to school should plan their time to arrive no earlier than 10:45am when building doors for entry open. They will follow the sidewalk on the west side of the building and head for the covered walkway. Walkers should look for and stand on the 6’markings on the pavement as they wait to enter the building. Hallway Expectations: When navigating the halls students and staff will walk tight to the right of hallways and stairways and go directly to their classroom without stopping or loitering. Students are to maintain a 6ft distance when in the hallway if possible. In Class: Classrooms have been arranged so that the desks are 6ft apart and front facing. Students will have access to hand sanitizer and the sink to wash hands. Water fountains should only be used to fill reusable water bottles. In order to prepare for the next class, students will assist in cleaning their desks and tables before they leave class. Classroom instruction will be provided in-person for hybrid students at the same time as being shared via Zoom and Google classroom with remote students. Classes will have participation from both students in class and Zoom students during the lesson. If a classroom teacher remains remote, all students including those in hybrid learning will obtain the instruction through Zoom. Supplies: Students are to bring only the necessary supplies needed for each day: pencil/pens, notebooks etc. Chromebooks will be provided for use in each classroom so students are not to bring their home devices. Students should not share personal belongings with others. Music Classes: Music classes will review protocols on the first day. Students will be provided with music specific PPE such as bell covers and specialized masks. Bathrooms: To limit the number of students using the bathroom at one time, bathrooms are unavailable for use during passing periods. All classrooms at Showalter will follow the same procedure for using the bathroom. Students will ask permission from their teacher, sign out as they leave. Each student will be issued a lanyard with a cardholder. Students will look to see if there is an empty hook on the exterior of the closest bathroom to hang their bathroom pass. If all hooks are in use, they have to wait until one is available. After using the bathroom they will return to class and sign back in. Late Arrivals: To limit access to Showalter, the exterior doors are locked. If a student arrives late, they will wait at the main door for a staff member to let them in and escort them to the attendance office window to get a pass to class. Early Release: If your student requires an early release, remain in your vehicle and call the main office when you arrive. Student Dismissal: We will stagger student dismissal at the end of the day. Students will remain in their 3rd/6th period class until the method they are using to get home is called. Meal pick up will take place at two locations as students exit. One location will be provided in the new B-Wing and the other in the Commons. Busses will be dismissed one at a time. Parent/guardian pick-up will be the last group to be dismissed and pick up will occur on the east side of the building in the area where students were dropped off.
