                               September 2018

                                Chair’s Message
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the sun and the
heat. Perhaps we will see some cooler fall weather in the forecast soon.
It was a banner year last year with so many successful sales and events! A record
$115,000 was donated to the Symphony in 2017-2018 along with a $20,000 donation in
June to start the 2018-2019 donations. Thank you to our loyal customers for helping us
achieve our goals event after event and sale after sale. Congratulations and thank you
to all the event and sales chairs and a heartfelt thank you to the many volunteers who
spent so many hours of their precious time making it happen.
Our executive will look a little different this fall. In June, David Notman completed his
time as our President/Chair. We appreciate his leadership and commitment to the
position and his devotion to the Kingston Symphony. David remains on the executive as
chair of the Vinyl Records Sale and interim chair of the Book Fair and Nearly New Sale.
Also, in June, we said good bye to three devoted and long standing members of the
executive. Joan Butler took care of volunteer memberships and so capably published
our newsletter, Symphonic Notes. Heather Sutherland was at the helm of the Nearly
New Sale for over ten years. Marilyn Campbell chaired the Book Fair team and has
been a devoted and long serving volunteer. Heather and Marilyn and their teams of
dedicated helpers surpassed themselves in funds raised sale after sale, year after year.
We are going to miss their leadership and expertise around the executive table.
I want to thank everyone involved in the June warehouse donation days. The donations
flew in the door and the boxes were stacked to the rafters. A crew of dedicated
volunteers spent a considerable amount of time during the rest of this very hot, humid
summer in the very hot, humid warehouse getting ready for the upcoming Book Fair. So
many great donations were received. It looks like it is a sale that is not to be missed.
See you at the Warehouse!

                               Treasurer’s Notes
On June 14 at our annual June luncheon at Minos Village, two presentations were
made to Luca Andolfatto, President of the Kingston Symphony Association’s Board of
Directors. The first presentation was a large cheque recognizing that the Volunteer
SYMPHONIC NOTES - Kingston Symphony
Committee donated $115,000 for the fiscal year June 1, 2017-May 31, 2018 to the
Kingston Symphony. This was an unprecedented amount, up from the $102,000 the
preceding year and $92,000 the year before that.
The second presentation was a cheque for $20,000 as the committee’s first donation to
the Symphony for this current fiscal year. All of this is due to the fund raising committee
chairs and their many dedicated and hard-working volunteers who give hundreds of
hours for each fund raiser, as well as our faithful customers and Kingstonians who
generously make contributions to our various sales. This allows us to continue making
significant annual contributions to the Kingston Symphony Association.
We’re nearly into the fall and our first big fund raiser, the annual Book Fair from
September 5-9 and 15-16. This has been our biggest fund raiser and we hope that
continues. The volunteers have been working diligently through the summer months
with more books than ever, and they’re ready to go. We continue to provide the
debit/credit terminal for use at all warehouse sales where debit cards, Mastercard, and
Visa use are available.
The Book Fair is followed by the Nearly New Sale from October 11-14, the October 20
Fashion show, the Vinyl Records Sale from November 1-4, followed by the All Things
Christmas on November 17-18. Further sales will occur in 2019.
We hope to see you at the upcoming Book Fair and our future sales.

as possible by calling 613-546-9729 or emailing ksavolunteercommittee@gmail.com.

Publicity – You are our best publicist!
Increasingly, we are depending on digital media to promote our events. The addition of
photos of the stock promote interest in the sale as well as individual items. We know
this because customers have asked about things they saw in the online photos. The
rack cards reach others who are not looking for our sales and are critical in bringing in
new customers with new money to spend. Expanding our local customer base is the
easiest way to increase our profits, especially since our long-distance customers are not
as numerous as 15 years ago.
If you are receiving donations or helping at a sale, especially at the cash, ensure every
donor and every customer gets a bookmark. Offer the rack cards for the next event.
Some customers do patronize several of our events or they may know someone who
would be interested. The bookmark especially has been well received, as all the year’s
events are listed in a concise, easy to read font. Make sure every customer and donor
is on our list. The KSA office is gradually combining concert & ticket information with
news about VC-KSA events; these go via email in brief news “blasts”, complete with
photos to increase interest.
The Kingston Frontenac Public Libraries will put posters on their bulletin boards but few
if any stores will put posters in their windows or keep a pile of rack cards on their cash
desk. They are inundated with requests every week and cannot possibly accommodate
all, so now often refuse everyone. When you are doing your banking or shopping,
mention you are a Kingston Symphony volunteer, have a half-dozen rack cards in your
hand. Say, for example, “The Symphony book sale is coming up soon. Might I leave
these for your staff?” A few may still refuse, but most are quite agreeable. It’s easier
when you are already familiar to them.
Direct person-to-person contact is still responsible for 40-50% of our customers. Tell
your friends, neighbours, extended family about our events. Share our adverts on Kijiji
by copying the link in a message or use the ad-forwarding tool. Share our Facebook
page notices. Direct person-to-person contact is still responsible for 40-50% of our
customers.
The cost of postage plus envelopes, labels, etc. has put a halt to customer mailings.
Each event has a webpage; Google is your friend. Twelve years ago or more, I worked
hard to get our pages to pop up in a simple search like “Kingston symphony records”.
Even though they are now on the KSA’s website instead of on my personal webspace,
that work has paid off as the first search result is usually ours. Via the webpages, one
can request reminders of sales and donation days or email a question about the event.
The KSA website and Facebook pages are the place to look for pertinent dates and
information about donations & sales. Check it out!

                          Program at Spring Luncheon
Four of the six Music Awards recipients played at the Spring Luncheon on June 14.
They were Victoria Lui and Sophia Battel, Avery Marcella, and Leonid Nediak. Alice Kim
and Felix Melanson sent regrets as they had exams.
Leonid Nediak, piano, winner of The Allan-Jack Memorial Award $1,000

Leonid Nediak, 15, has been a soloist in more than a dozen
orchestra concerts and has also performed numerous solo recitals
internationally. He has received prizes at international piano
competitions and was selected as the youngest of the “30 Hot
Canadian Classical Musicians under 30” by CBC Music in 2015.

                      .

Adrienne Shannon and is also a figure skater. At this year’s Kiwanis

Felix Melanson, 13, started playing cello when he was 4. For him,
the instrument is "like a voice with magical qualities". He just completed

and French Music. She has participated in many competitions and
performances in Canada and Korea. In addition to playing the piano,

                           Music Lovers’ House Tour
The 23rd Annual Music Lovers’ House Tour took place on Saturday, May 26, 2018. The
tour included eight houses ranging from historic to contemporary. We were grateful to
Queen’s University for allowing us to include the Macklem House. The beautiful
architecture, décor, art and collectibles in each of the houses provided an interesting
and visually exciting day for all.
We sold 458 passbooks this year and received $9,000 in sponsorships enabling the
house tour committee to contribute $20,000 to the Kingston Symphony.
The winners of our draw prizes this year were: Tine Atkinson who won two tickets to a
KSA concert of her choice, Jane Cooper, who won the basket of handmade artisan
chocolates from Cocoa Bistro, and Judie Goldie who won the $100 gift certificate from
Gallery Raymond. Thank you to Cocoa Bistro, Gallery Raymond and the KSA for their
generosity.
Organizing the day involved help and support from many people. Gratitude is extended
to the homeowners who very generously opened their homes to us that day. Thanks
also to our generous sponsors whose donations helped make the event so successful.
We are grateful to the passbook outlets for selling passbooks: Expressions Fashion
Boutique, In Bloom, Very Shari and the KSA Office and to the churches and their
volunteers for providing lunch. Thank you to Andrea Haughton, Cody Chretien, Nicolas
Pacheco and Leslie O’Sullivan at the KSA office for all their help. They are incredibly
talented and so very good at what they do. Special thanks to Tim Torgerson for the
beautiful drawings of each of the houses. Thank you, also, to the KSA Volunteer
Committee Executive who were always supportive and offered great suggestions. Over
100 individual and groups of musicians volunteered their time and immense talent to
contribute the beautiful music in each of the houses. Their contribution makes our day
unique and reminds us of why we fund raise.
And finally, many, many thanks to the organized, efficient and wonderful women of the
House Tour committee who made this year’s tour such a great success: Joan
Armstrong, Kathryn Derby, Susan Gibbon, Pauline Heissler, Linda MacKinnon, Trudy
McKeown, Janet McDonald, Katherine Murphy, Mary Reid, Diane Sackfield, Gill
Turnbull, and Marion Westenberg.

                          News from the KSA Office
The Kingston Symphony’s 65th season opens in less than a month and we are looking
forward to a wonderful year of music. I hope by now, you have received a copy of our
2018-2019 season program. If you have not or know of someone who would like to be
on our mailing list, please contact the Kingston Symphony Association office. The
program can also be viewed online at www.kingstonsymphony.ca.
Our first concert of the season is on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at the
Isabel. This concert showcases the best of Russia’s romantic orchestral music including
Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme featuring
cellist Joseph Johnson. The program also includes the rarely heard Symphony No. 2 by
Vasily Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky’s.
At our second Masterworks concert on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at the
Isabel, we perform Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and selections from Grieg’s Peer
Gynt Suite. Vadim Serebryany returns to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, and
Rachel Krehm sings a selection of Strauss art songs.
On Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Theatre, one of Canada’s
leading traditional fiddlers, Pierre Schryer, joins the Kingston Symphony for an evening
of Canadian Celtic roots music. Joined by his all-star band, it will be an electrifying, toe-
tapping Celtic celebration complete with step dancing!
Our first family concert of the season is on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at
the Grand Theatre. Guest conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser leads the Kingston
Symphony in a program of music by performers and composers of colour in a show
called Black is Beautiful. Music from icons such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Jimi
Hendrix, and many more will be performed in an afternoon where the whole family will
have fun learning about the major contribution these artists made to music history then
and now.

www.kingstonsymphony.ca. Single tickets are now on sale through the Grand Theatre
Box Office, by calling 613-530-2050 or online at www.kingstonsymphony.ca. It’s not too
