In addition, we are offer a wide range of additional experiences and opportunities to all of our students to develop their personal and social skills. Our extra-curricular programme helps to develop our students into well rounded, confident and able young people, equipped for life in Modern Britain. These clubs, societies and academies include groups such as the Debate Society, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, Sports, Drama, Careers in Medicine, Law Society plus many more. We hope that you will encourage your son or daughter to take part in these activities to enrich their CVs and to enhance their college experience. As parents and carers, we will work closely with you to ensure that, together, we develop your son’s or daughter’s dedication to study. As a partnership, we all want the same thing – success for our young people. We will keep in regular contact with you through reports and parents’ evenings, as well as through your son’s or daughter’s Personal Progress Tutor. In college, we will challenge your son or daughter academically, making sure that they work hard to achieve their very best and we hope that you will do the same at home. For example, we expect parents to help us make sure that our students’ attendance and punctuality are excellent. It is important for their success that they do not miss valuable class time so we do not give permission for trips and holidays outside these times. You and your son/daughter are now part of the JCC family. We are an exciting and aspirational community and really look forward to meeting you in the very near future. If you need anything at all, do get in touch with us. With my best wishes, Tony Day Principal. 3

What are Target Grades? From the grades your child achieves in their GCSE’s a grade is predicted through A level Performance Systems (ALPS). As a college we use this grade to measure the progress your child is making. How is an AS/A level course assessed? Most of the AS/A level subjects are assessed by an end of year external examination. If your child is studying an AS/A level programme they will have around 10 formal Monthly Assessment Points (MAPS). These are held under exam conditions in their classroom and students are graded on the 7 point A level scheme with grade A*(the highest), A,B,C,D,E to grade U(fail). These grades are our internal assessments and do not count towards your child’s final grade. Please click here for the MAP calendar of assessments Teachers use these grades to measure the progress of your child and to put in intervention where needed. You can check your child’s MAP grades through Parent ProPortal. 17
How is a Vocational or BTEC course assessed? Your child may be studying a level 2 or level 3 Vocational BTEC course. These courses consist of a number of units some of which are internally assessed and others externally assessed through an exam element. Externally-assessed units - each assessment is taken under specified conditions, then marked by the exam board and a grade awarded. Internally-assessed units - students are set work to complete by a deadline. If they meet the deadline they will have ONE opportunity to improve their assignment grade. If a student fails to meet the assignment deadline their work will be marked when submitted and graded but there will be no further opportunity to improve the grade. We strongly encourage students to hand in their work by the deadline. Grading of BTEC units - Units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D) which is the highest, Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N) and Unclassified (U). The grade of Near Pass is used for externally-assessed units only. More information about BTECS can be found at https://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/btec-works/BTEC- student-parent-guide-2020.pdf 18

How to support your child through exams Exams are a stressful time for any young person. Mood swings and outbursts are more likely to occur during this period. Look out for other indicators that your child may be struggling, including poor sleep patterns or a change in appetite or behaviour. There are lots of ways to prepare for the lead up to exams, ways of supporting during exam weeks and thinking about how you will react and respond on the day if they don’t get the result that they, or you, are hoping for. Here are some useful tips: • Plan ahead - speak to their progress tutor to find out what revision techniques they recommend • Work with your child to find what revision style works for them • Encourage breaks and balance of work load and enjoyable activities • Make sure they are eating and drinking at regular intervals • Encourage them to take some time after revising to wind down • Reassure them – reinforce that you are and will be proud of them no matter what happens • Don’t try to police the young person • Remain positive and hopeful • Plan a treat or an activity together to mark the end of the exams For more information click on www.youngminds.org.uk 22
