Welcome to Wyken Croft Primary School We hope that both you and your child will be very happy during your time with us. We believe that every child has a talent and part of our task is to find and nurture that talent, ensuring all children feel valued and positive about themselves and their learning. Starting school is a really special and exciting time and we appreciate that you may have many questions to ask. We aim to provide as much information as possible in this pack; however there will also be lots of opportunities to discuss any of your thoughts, queries or concerns with the Nursery staff. Values Our school has developed a set of values called: 7 STEPS TO SUCCESS. The particular values we include are: The ‘Seven Steps to Success’ are a range of values based attributes we believe will enable our children to be happy, engaged and positive about their futures, striving to be the best they can be. An important part of the Seven Steps is how it is recognised and celebrated. Children regularly receive stickers and wristbands to wear which are awarded by members of staff to commend their use of individual skills. The staff are also able to applaud the children’s use of the Seven Steps by sending home postcards. This is often a surprise for the children and is met with great elation.
School Rules We believe Wyken Croft is a school where children should feel happy, safe, valued and treated fairly. Our rules link with the value driven ethos of our school and can be applied through the school and our community. We hope you will work in partnership with us to support the promotion of both our values and rules to your child. STAR POINTS The children in EYFS and KS1 collect star points. Star points are collected and children are rewarded with a certificate. Star points begin in Nursery at pink level and have a continuation of coloured certificates through to the end of Year 2. The children can be awarded star points by any member of staff for demonstrating any of our school rules well. The children will stamp their chart with the awarded star point/s. Once the children have completed the chart they will receive a certificate signed by the phase Assistant Head teacher for that colour chart and move onto next colour step.

Admission Arrangements To ensure that all children have the opportunity for individual attention and to help them settle happily into nursery, we have detailed our admission arrangements for September below. We have allowed a gradual introduction in small groups to ensure the children meet everyone in their class in stages. Home Visits Your child’s Nursery teacher will complete a home visit to see your child only if they are new to Wyken Croft. If a home visit was completed in their Phoenix Nursery year when they joined Wyken Croft, a second visit may not be needed. However, if you have had a change in family circumstances or it is felt that your child would benefit from a visit, then this can be arranged. Visits are a really good way for staff to begin to get to know both you and your child, exchange information and plan your child’s start to Nursery. You will also have the chance to ask questions and express any concerns/worries you may have. Under the current circumstances, it is likely that this visit will be a “doorstep visit.” All the information given will help staff to settle your child when they first start in Nursery. Visits will take place on either Monday 7th September or Tuesday 8th September. Your date and time slot will be provided in your accompanying letter. Meet The Nursery Team Session - Stay and Play (with parents) We would like to invite you and your child to attend a session together to meet the Nursery team and visit their new Nursery classroom. These sessions will be on Thursday 10th September and Friday 11th September at varying times (please see table below). Your child will be allocated a group colour and time slot which is provided in your accompanying letter. We understand that your child starting nursery is a special time for your family however we ask that only one adult accompanies them on the day please. Admission Arrangements cont... September Start For their first visits to school, children will be welcomed as part of a smaller group in order to ensure that staff have time to meet and settle each child. Parental Involvement We strongly believe that working in partnership with parents and carers is hugely important and contributes to the successes and achievements that your child will have with us at Wyken Croft Primary School. We are a very welcoming school with approachable staff who are always available to help and support you and your child in the best way we can. Throughout the year there are many opportunities for us to work together: • Informal discussion daily during drop off and collection at the end of the school day • Newsletters • Open Mornings • Parent workshops • Termly Parents’ Evenings • Achievement Assembly (Summer Term Only) • Special events e.g. Christmas concert, Easter Bonnet Parade etc.. • Recording in children’s ‘Learning Journals’ • Parents can join the PTA If you have any skills you would like to share with our children, e.g. gardening, Indian dancing or baking etc... Please see Miss Hitchcox or Sharon Cockerill as we would love you to join us. Please have a look at our website which is updated regularly and shows what we have been doing in school. We also add useful websites which you can explore with your child at home. Our website address is www.wykencroft.coventry.sch.uk
School Uniform All children are strongly encouraged to wear school colours. It helps the children to feel they belong to their school. We expect children to wear: • Grey or black jogging bottoms (plain NOT branded) • White polo shirt - please no shirts, the children have difficulty undoing the buttons when playing in the water tray. • Red sweatshirt/fleece • Red gingham dress/grey pinafore or grey skirt • Sensible black footwear Children should not wear any jewellery to nursery. We take no responsibility for its loss. Children with pierced ears must wear a pair of stud earrings only for safety reasons and may need to remove them for P.E. Outdoor Clothing Children will need to have a pair of wellies and a sun hat that we can keep in school at all times as they will be accessing the outdoor area in all weathers. Please provide a change of clothes in a small, named bag in case of any toileting or general accidents. This will be kept on their peg and taken home daily. PE Kit Children will need to have a named pair of pumps to wear during our PE sessions. (PE sessions will start after October half term). Naming Clothing To avoid children losing clothing it is vital that each item is named. We do try to encourage children to be independent and look after their belongings though this becomes difficult for them if they are not named. The following websites may be useful for name labels: www.easy2name.com www.stuckonyou.uk www.wovenlabelsuk.com
Health and Well being Well being It is essential that all of our pupils are safe, happy and healthy whilst at nursery in our care. We would always encourage you to discuss any worries or concerns you have with a member of staff. Also, if there are any issues or changes for children at home then it would be helpful for us to know, as it may affect them whilst in school. It is very important that you inform us if your child has any medical needs so we can consider how to support you in looking after them while they are in school. If there are any accidents or medical issues with your child during the school day, we have a number of staff members who are trained paediatric first aiders to deliver any treatment required. Parents and carers are always contacted if there is any injury to the head or any injury which we view as ‘serious’. If your child is ill, please do not bring him/her to nursery. Please follow our brief guide to show the shortest time children will need to be away if they have an infectious illness. Illness Minimum time away from school Chicken pox Until all of the spots have crusted over Measles 4 days from appearance of rash Mumps 5 days from start of illness Whooping Cough 5 days from start of treatment with antibiotics 21 days from beginning of cough if not taking antibiotics German Measles 4 days from appearance of rash Sickness and/or Diarrhoea 24 hours clear from the last episode Slapped Cheek None unless child feels unwell Head Lice Please check your child’s head at least once a week and ensure you treat immediately if necessary. It is vital that all children are checked and treated to avoid the continual spread of head lice.
Health and Well being continued... Medicine Nursery staff will only administer medication that has been prescribed for your child by a doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist and we will follow our school medicine policy. Parents are required to complete and sign a medication form detailing the name of medication, dosage to be administered and time this is due to be taken on the arrival of their session. If your child takes regular medicine due to a long term illness or allergy, a Health-care plan will need to be completed and a letter from a doctor/ specialist explaining their condition will need to be provided. Holidays and Absences If your child is ill and is unable to attend nursery then please phone us before 9:30am on the day of absence so we can record their non-attendance and provide a reason why. If we identify that your child is not in nursery and you have not informed us of the reasons, then you will be contacted by a member of the school attendance team. If your child needs to attend a medical appointment during the nursery day, they should still attend nursery where possible. You should provide the appointment card or letter so this can be recorded onto the register. At Wyken Croft Primary School holidays in term time will not be authorised unless in exceptional circumstances as agreed by the Head Teacher. They can cause great disruption to children’s learning, particularly when they are very young and settling into school. There is a list of school holidays and dates provided on our website so that you are able to plan your holidays accordingly.. If you have no alternative, please discuss details with the Head Teacher before any bookings for travel are made.
COVID 19 As a school it is vital that in these unprecedented times we continue to adhere to the current advice given by the Government. We ask that you follow this advice mindfully and exercise the appropriate hygiene guidelines and social distancing. This is to ensure all children, their families and school staff follow safe practices. School plans and procedures will be adapted to reflect the national and local situation where necessary. Please speak to your child regularly about safe practices such as maintaining a safe distance where possible, coughing into their elbow, using tissues, regular hand washing and not touching their face. List of symptoms for COVID 19 The main symptoms of coronavirus are: • high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature) • new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual) • loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you have noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal. If your child or any member of your household display any symptoms of COVID 19, please inform school immediately. DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILD(REN) TO NURSERY. Call 111 or visit www.nhs.co.uk If your child displays symptoms of COVID 19 in nursery, you will be contacted to collect your child and advised to book a test for COVID 19. If that test is positive all family members living within your household will be asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Your child will not be allowed to attend nursery.
Safeguarding Whilst your child is at Nursery, we are responsible for their well-being and safety. If staff are at all concerned about the welfare of any child who attends the nursery, school procedures will be followed and the appropriate action will be taken. Whilst we make every effort to work in partnership with you as parents and inform you immediately of any concerns we may have, this may not always be possible due to the nature of the concern. We may be required to seek advice from Social Care or the Safeguarding Children's Partnership may be contacted prior to informing you as parents/carers. Therefore, it is very important that all parents/carers inform the Nursery Staff of any accidents, illness or medication to prevent any unnecessary upset and misunderstanding. An incoming illness or injury form will also be provided for you to complete. If you have any safeguarding concerns, please see Mrs Webb who is the Designated Safeguarding Lead for our school. WE DO NOT ALLOW CAMERAS OR MOBILE PHONES INSIDE THE NURSERY ROOMS Please do not be offended as all staff will instruct anyone using a mobile phone to stop. Attendance We will work in partnership with you to ensure regular attendance in Nursery is maintained. Children need to attend Nursery regularly to benefit from their education and develop their social skills. Although attending Nursery is not a statutory requirement, missing out on attending Nursery where a child has been registered may leave children vulnerable to falling behind and under-achieving. Our expectations are that ‘good’ attendance should be at 96% or above for all children. If a Nursery child’s attendance figure should fall below 90%, then we will offer support to help improve this, however we do reserve the right to withdraw the place if no improvements are shown over time. (Please refer to our Nursery admission policy for further details.)
Safeguarding Dropping Off Procedures When arriving at Nursery, it is the parent/carers’ responsibility to ensure that their child is safely within the nursery. Nursery will not accept responsibility for any child until they are in the playroom. On arrival your child will need to find their named picture and their corresponding picture on a coat peg where they hang their belongings. The children will have a drawer where they will keep their pictures they have created and any letters the children will need to take home. Collection Procedure We will only allow children to go home with parents/carers that we are familiar with, or have been authorised by parents who have legal responsibility of the child. We operate a passcode scheme, with a word provided by parents given to the Nursery staff to store securely. In the event of an emergency and another adult is sent to collect your child who is not on the authorised list you will have provided to staff, the passcode will need to be provided before the child will be released into their care. Sharing Information Procedures When arriving at Nursery, it is the parent/carers’ responsibility to ensure any daily information Nursery staff may require about your child is recorded on the ‘Communication sheet.’ This information will be shared with the necessary staff and is also useful to ensure the transitions for those children attending both Phoenix Nursery and Wyken Nursery (Shared Care children) are smooth. It is the parents/ carers’ responsibility to check the sheets at the end of the day should they require information about lunchtimes or any toileting accidents that may have occurred during the day.
Snack On a daily basis your child will have the opportunity to visit our snack bar. Each child is provided with a piece of fruit everyday as part of our ‘Fruit Scheme’. There is also the choice of water or milk everyday. The snack bar is an area where the children can visit independently at any time during the session. They will be able to choose and pour their own drink and select a piece of fruit. This is a lovely time where the children can sit and chat with their friends. We do request that children do not bring in their own snacks from home (other than those included in a packed lunch). This is to reduce the risk of children sharing snacks that they may not be allowed to eat due to food allergies. Please note we are a NUT FREE school. Celebration Treats When it is your child’s birthday, we are very happy to celebrate this special occasion in Nursery. We are also happy to share any sweets, cakes or other treats you wish to send in for the children. However, we do request that any treats sent in to school are suitable for all children to eat e.g. nut free, suitable for vegetarians, gelatine free etc...
And Finally … We are really looking forward to welcoming your child into nursery and we strive to provide exciting and challenging activities to ensure they have a positive start to school life here at Wyken Croft. We very much value your suggestions and opinions about your views on the Nursery year so please feel free to tell us if you think of a way in which we could make things better! We are committed to developing a partnership between home and school, and through the meetings planned and daily interaction we hope our relationship with you will ensure your child sees learning as something that is as important at home as it is in school. If you have any worries, concerns or questions please see a member of the Nursery team in the first instance – please be aware that the mornings are very busy and the Nursery Staff’s main priority is ensuring all children come into nursery safely. If you require a longer discussion, we would be very grateful if you could please make arrangements to come in and see a member of the tem at a convenient time for both so we can ensure you are given an appropriate amount of discussion time.
