Sykesville Parks and Recreation Sykesville Parks and Recreation Committee (SPARC) meets at the Town House on the 4th Thursday of the month, 7pm. For more information, please call 410-795-8959 or email parks@sykesville.net. Sykesville Parks and Recreation will be showing the original animated movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, just outside the Old Main Line Visitor Center and Post Office during this year’s Merry Main Street event (Saturday, December 6). The movie will be in full view of the kids and parents as they line up for a visit with Santa Claus. Don’t miss the surprise visit by the Grinch himself! Visit SPARC’s new Facebook page to keep current with news and events https://www.facebook.com/Sykesvilleparksandrecreationcommittee
Sykesville Cinema With a 12’ inflatable movie screen and a powerful audio and video system, the Sykesville Parks and Recreation Committee will be returning in 2015 with quality-run movie performances under the stars. The 2015 Summer Series will once again be held at Millard Cooper Park. Send your movie suggestions for next year’s lineup to parks@sykesville.net. Volunteers The Parks and Recreation Committee is looking for additional members and volunteers who are interested in making a difference in our parks, recreational activities and events for our families and others. If you have a few hours a month to spare and would like to join the team, please email parks@sykesville.net or call 410-795-8959. Huge volunteer efforts helped re-open Burkett Park playground! Sykesville Cinema and Community Outreach With your help, Sykesville Parks and Recreation hopes to support various charities within our community. During the 2015 Sykesville Cinema Summer Series, we’ll be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for Carroll County Food Sunday. Please help us with this very worthy cause by placing your donated items in the marked plastic bins found as you enter the park during movie nights. Carroll County Food Sunday encourages donors to give the kind of nutritious, non-perishable food they would serve their own families. Listed below is their Wish List. Canned Tuna, Salmon Canned Chicken Canned Fruit Canned Vegetables Canned Soup Hot or Cold Cereal Plain Rice Spaghetti in one pound boxes Macaroni & Cheese Peanut Butter Canned Beans Tomato Sauce Learn how you can help now @ http://ccfoodsunday.org/how-to-help/ Sykesville Parks Millard Cooper Park offers pavilions, picnic areas, a nature trail and playground equipment. Friday nights during the summer months is a great time to enjoy the free Concerts in the Park series. ‘The Coop’ is also home to Sykesville Cinema held on second Saturdays during summer months. The Snack Shack is open during movie and concert nights and features delicious hot dogs, freshly-popped popcorn, Hoffman’s ice cream, candy and drinks. The playground is lighted for the kids’ enjoyment. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and take in a movie under the stars or enjoy an evening of music from some of our incredible local talent. See you at ‘The Coop!’
Located across the street from Millard Cooper Park is The Sykesville Gatehouse Museum, which serves as a center for community education and historical interpretation of the Town’s heritage, and hosts special events highlighting history, the arts, and culture. From Millard Cooper Park, a short walk through the pedestrian tunnel running under Route 32 leads to the beautiful grounds at Warfield where hiking continues on a 3/4 mile loop trail. Downtown Main Street area parks include the Old Main Line Park, Little Sykes Railway Park and South Branch Park. The Old Main Line Park may be small in size, but is large in significance. The train tracks found here are from the original train line, dating from the early 1830’s. This line was known as the “Old Main Line.” Train enthusiasts will enjoy this area. The Little Sykes Railway Park operates a 1949 twelve-gauge train which young kids can ride. Rides are free but donations are greatly appreciated to help with the maintenance.
South Branch Park, located just across the Patapsco River Bridge, is home to a brand new playground and picnic shelter. Many more park improvements are in the works thanks to a partnership between the Town of Sykesville and Howard County. Sykesville’s Linear Trail stretches from Obrecht Road to the Patapsco River, and provides various fitness stations along the way as well as a fishing pond. The lower portion of the wooded trail parallels the Patapsco River and offers excellent river views and access to fishing holes.
