Be Power Smart this Summer in Whitehorse Now that we are in summer, we are sure to experience those extreme hot summer days over the next three months. With this comes the need to cool our homes and higher electricity use. To ensure our electricity grid in Whitehorse can run like normal during these peak consumption periods, here are some ways to keep cool and stay on top of your bills this summer: • Pre-cool your home before the heat sets in • Set your air conditioner between 24 and 26 degrees, and close off rooms that are not in use • Make sure all non-essential lighting is off • Close your blinds to keep the cool air in • Turn off appliances that aren’t being used at the power point • Avoid using your dishwasher, washing machine or dryer during peak periods • If you own a pool, switch off the pump, chlorinator, and any cleaning equipment For more information on United Energy’s Be Power Smart program, visit www.unitedenergy.com.au/your-electricity/be-power-smart To obtain free expert advice on how what you can do to become energy efficient, contact the Australian Energy Foundation by visiting www.aef.com.au or call 1300 236 855.

For every tree removed to build North East Link, at least two will be planted, helping to grow a greener north and east. Trees will be planted along and near the North East Link Project (including near the Eastern Freeway), keeping them as close as possible to where they have been removed. Trees will also be planted to shade and cool local places nearby like parks, nature reserves and walking and cycling paths. A Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Greater Melbourne Climate projections for Greater Melbourne indicate that temperatures will continue to increase; there will be more frequent and longer heat waves, increased severity and duration of bushfires, worsening air pollution, less frosts and a decline in rainfall. We can expect more extreme weather events including bushfires, severe storms, storm surges and heavy rainfall events. The Victorian Government has provided $9.3 million in funding for the development of six Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategies. You can take part in the consultation by reviewing the discussion paper and completing the survey by December 7th HERE.
