Mayor Page 2 - A Word from the Mayor A Word from the Welcome to the autumn edition of the City Chronicle. Although summer is on the wane, we’ve probably still got some hot weather ahead so remember to be careful out in the sun. We have recently published the latest instalment of our Sustainability Snapshot. It provides a very detailed report on our progress towards sustainability, which is essential to achieving our community aspirations. We have included a few brief highlights from the latest Snapshot inside this edition (pages 12 to 13). I encourage you to also read the full report, which is available on our website and at our libraries, for a much more comprehensive account of our sustainability journey. If you are looking for some great plants to fill in some spots in your garden we’ve got a free native plant giveaway coming up in April. Residents can get up to 10 free seedlings per household from Rockingham Golf Club in Cooloongup. Details on page 14. The City has been actively applying for state grants to help fund various projects. Over recent months we have been successful in attracting several million dollars in State government funding for a range of activities. You can read more about these grants on page 5. With Easter already on the horizon, and an extra-long weekend ideal for catching up with friends or going away for a break, the roads are going to be busy. So it’s timely to remember that road safety is a shared responsibility. The police will be out in force doing their best to ensure the roads are kept safe. But every driver should be part of the solution. Please drive carefully and help make our roads safe. The City is providing Drive So Others Survive bumper stickers at our Libraries, Administration Building and our Summer Series Outdoor Cinema events. Grab a sticker, take the Road Safety Pledge on the reverse side, and do your bit to help make a difference. Please enjoy this edition of the Chronicle. Around Our Community - Page 5 Around Our Community Coastal Management Study - Community Information Sessions In early March the City held two community information sessions for sharing the key considerations and outcomes of the Safety Bay Shoalwater Coastal Management Study. The study was undertaken to assist with the development of a strategic approach to coastal management for the next 10 years. It investigated the coastal processes, evaluated current coastal management activities, and provided recommendations for future management of the coast from the Garden Island Causeway Bridge to the Waikiki foreshore. The study also reviewed the existing boating facilities within the area and explored the opportunity for future extension and development. While the study provides a strong technical knowledge base, the community will play a key role in the development of the Coastal Facilities Strategy which will be developed in 2020/2021.
