Staying sun-smart Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide SUNNIER DAYS MEANS MORE TIME OUTDOORS BUT WITH SPRING COMING TO AN END AND SUMMER AROUND THE CORNER, IT’S IMPORTANT TO STAY SUN - SMART AND PROTECT YOURSELF FROM DAMAGING ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RAYS. According to the Cancer Council of Australia, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, and the majority of cases are caused by overexposure to UV radiation. To protect your skin, let the council’s five-step slogan - slip, slop, slap, seek and slide - be your guide to avoiding skin cancer. For best protection, when the UV level is at three or above, the Cancer Council of Australia recommends a combination of sun-protection measures: • Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible. • Slop on broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF30 sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun. • Slap on a hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears. • Seek shade. • Slide on some sunglasses - make sure they meet Australian standards. Be extra cautious in the middle of the day when UV levels are most intense. For more information visit www.cancer.org.au/ cancer-information/types-of-cancer/skin-cancer NOVEMBER 2020 9

Floating wetlands One of the major components of the lake management program was the installation of an eco-friendly floating wetlands treatment system. Four sets of floating wetlands, a series of rafts made from recycled plastic drink bottles, house plants which filter the lake water, removing pollutants and lowering phosphorus levels which slows soil erosion and helps plant life thrive. The water is cleaned through plant, soil and root interactions that mimic natural wetlands and contain beneficial water- cleaning microorganisms. They also function as flood barriers and support fish and plant life. Weed removal If you thought weeding the garden was a never-ending chore, removing tens of thousands of invasive weeds from GemLife Bribie Island’s lakes makes that look like a lazy Sunday stroll. The main culprit was the aquatic weed Hyacinth, a particularly pesky species which have bulbs that actually dirty bodies of water. The weed removal program took two and a half months. The species is a major pest within waterways and its dense growth will reduce fish populations, limit food sources for waterfowl and provide shelter for mosquitoes. Recirculation system To keep GemLife Bribie Island’s lakes clean, a recirculation system, powered by two pumps, creates separate circulation loops to send water-flow through the floating wetlands. The recirculation system has the added benefit of preventing weeds, such as Hyacinth, from growing back because the flow of the water prevents them from taking root. The management program is an ongoing, long-term commitment to keep GemLife Bribie Island’s lakes sparkling clean and support a healthy natural ecosystem. www.gemlife.com.au NOVEMBER 2020 21

I belonged to clubs and the gym - I was settled - they didn’t think I’d move. But they’re dying to visit when restrictions are lifted and see the country club when it opens.” When Alida saw how spacious the homes were, especially compared to Melbourne, she was won over. But most of all, she has been impressed by the friendly atmosphere at GemLife Woodend. “I really love it and I’m very happy. I can’t believe how friendly everyone is - I feel like I’ve lived here for a while. The social aspect is important and I never feel alone,” she said. Her daughter Vanessa, who moved to the Macedon Ranges region three years ago, is thrilled to see her mum so happy and settled. “I couldn’t praise the resort highly enough. Compared to what’s available in Melbourne, it’s easily above and beyond anything there,” said Vanessa. Virtual tours of GemLife Woodend’s display homes and new country club are available. THE GEM - NOVEMBER 2020 Artistic flair A passion for painting is taking over Highfields WHEN GEMLIFE HIGHFIELDS RESIDENT HENRY RYMAN MADE THE MOVE FROM THE CITY TO THE COUNTRY AT THE END OF JUNE AND DECIDED TO START A SOCIAL ART GROUP, HE NEVER COULD HAVE ANTICIPATED HOW POPULAR IT WOULD BECOME. Henry was introduced to the world of art four years ago while living at an over-50s resort in Brisbane and has been hooked on drawing and painting ever since. “I went down to their art group and explained that I had never done any art before. The man who was running the group told me to try drawing a dog, which I did and my love of art grew from there,” said Henry. Shortly after moving to GemLife Highfields Henry started a social art group which has been gaining new members every week. “There are some very talented artists and some people who are just starting out. It’s a nice mix of people.” “Even if you’ve never thought about trying art before, it doesn’t hurt to come and just give it a go. You might surprise yourself,” said Henry. “The first step is just to start, pick something to draw or paint - it can be anything - and you can always find things on the internet.” For those looking to learn a new skill, Henry is always happy to lend a helping hand. “I’m not a professional but I’m happy to offer tips and support people who are just starting out.” The art group meets Mondays at 10am in the country club. www.gemlife.com.au NOVEMBER 2020 29
