ABBREVIATION GUIDE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES GENERAL INFORMATION Registration will be held weekdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Harris Center, starting May 7. Registration will be accepted in-person only. No phone FEE/PAYABLE registration. Registration will only be accepted from participants who live or work COA City of Auburn in the City of Auburn during the first two weeks of registration, May 7-18. REFUNDS: Refunds will be given only when a participant cancels from an activity before the first class or tryout day. BCC Boykin Community Center RENT-A-FACILITY: City of Auburn Parks and Recreation facilities and parks are BCG Boykin Community Gym available to the public for rental. Rental fees vary depending on the amount of space, CSP Chewacla State Park equipment, and type of facility needed. Auburn Parks and Recreation was proud to host Scale Back Alabama (SBA) for the fifth year! Weigh-outs for the 2018 Scale Back Alabama program begin Monday, April 2. Weigh-out week will continue through Sunday, April 8. Participants signed up as part of a Scale Back Alabama Team may visit designated Parks and Recreation facilities for their official team weigh-out. Below is a complete schedule of weigh-out days and times: Dean Road Recreation Center: April 2-6, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Frank Brown Recreation Center: April 2-5, 6:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.; April 6, 6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.; April 7: 8 a.m. – Noon; April 8, 1 – 6 p.m. Harris Senior Center: April 2-6, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to weigh-out even if they aren’t sure they made their goal of losing 10 pounds during the campaign. 14TH ANNUAL AUBURN SPECIAL EVENTS CITYFEST JURIED ART PREVIEW RECEPTION If you are excited for Auburn CityFest 2018 join us on Thursday, April 26th for the 14th Annual Juried Art Preview Reception. The reception is brought to you by the Auburn CityFest Committee, the Auburn Arts Association and the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau. Artists from the Southeast are invited to submit works for this competition. More than $1,000 in awards will be presented. The reception will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the historic Nunn-Winston House on the grounds of Kiesel Park. This reception is FREE to the public and food and beverages will be offered. Released in 1990, “Troll 2” was the completely unrelated sequel to “Troll” (1986). There are no trolls, only goblins. Goblins who want to gobble up the unsuspecting family who happens to sign up for a house swap in the town of Nilbog. The film has achieved unprecedented fame as the best worst movie of all-time and, at one time, held a 0% rating on the film-rating website Rotten Tomatoes. Over the years, the movie has developed a cult following and inspired a documentary, entitled “Best Worst Movie.” Join the Davis Arboretum and Auburn Parks and Recreation as we host Dr. George Hardy – a 1977 Auburn graduate and native resident of Alexander City, Alabama, actor, dentist and cast member of 18TH ANNUAL “Troll 2” – as he discusses his experiences working on the film, subsequent fame and everything in between, and then stick around for screenings of AUBURN CITYFEST: “Troll 2” and “Best Worst Movie.” Additionally, this event has been designated an Alabama Bicentennial event, as we “Honor Our People” in the year of NATIVE ALABAMA 2018. SUMMER SIP SERIES! SPECIAL EVENTS Take some time out from the summer sun to dabble in the arts and join us for the Summer Sip Series. Participants 21 years and older are invited to come and enjoy three unforgettable evenings filled with friends, fun and art! Specially designed, hands-on workshops help you create masterpieces for you to enjoy for years to come. Local artists provide instruction and all the materials needed to complete your project. Each night of the Summer Sip Series will highlight a different medium and project. In May, participants will be creating knotted cord station necklaces using semi precious stones, ethnic metal charms, Czech Glass and vintage pieces. The June workshop will feature an opportunity to create a one of a kind painted ceramic plate. No matter your skill level, you’ll have a great time painting pottery with step-by-step instructions led by a Dean Road Ceramics Studio instructor. To finish up the Summer Sip Series, July participants will enjoy paper marbling. This workshop will introduce techniques of ‘western’ paper marbling using non-toxic materials. SummerNight will feature a standing line party and parade beginning at 5 p.m. at the Center for Arts & Humanities. SPECIAL EVENTS BEE AUBURN: A CELEBRATION OF POLLINATORS The Auburn University College of Agriculture and Auburn Parks and Recreation are back for the second Bee Auburn! Bee Auburn is a celebration of pollinators and their impacts on our lives and features lectures and activities during the week of June 18 – 22. This year’s theme is blueberries in honor of the Southeastern Blueberry Bee, which was discovered by a former professor at Auburn University! The week will culminate in the Bee Auburn main event, a festival-styled celebration at the Donald E. Davis Arboretum from 5:30 – 8 p.m. on Friday, June 22. The event will feature arts & crafts vendors, local farmers and organizations, live music, pollinator tours through the Arboretum and children’s activities. A complete schedule of the week’s activities is as follows: Monday, June 18: Cooking with Pollinators: Dinner at the AU Community Garden Tuesday, June 19: Coffee Tuesday, Tea and Teacups Wednesday, June 20: Bee-A-Biologist Educators Event (invitation only), Kids Night at the Arboretum Thursday, June 21: Scientific Arts at JCSM Friday, June 22: Bee Auburn Registration will be required for Tea and Teacups, a Sip N’ Paint event, and space is limited to 20 participants ages 21 and older. POLLINATORS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: SHADES OF BLUE Join Auburn Parks and Recreation and the Auburn University College of Agriculture for the second Pollinators Photography Exhibition. The exhibition acts as a preview for Bee Auburn, held in June. In keeping with the Bee Auburn 2018 theme of blueberries, this year’s exhibition will be themed “Shades of Blue,” and all works must feature the color blue prominently. Artists/photographers are able to submit up to two (2) works in any photographic medium completed in the last 3 years. Works must be submitted at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9. The exhibition will be on display at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center from Monday, May 14 – Friday, May 25. A reception for the artists and public will be held on Friday, May 18 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. For details on entering the exhibition, please visit auburnalabama.org/parks. SPECIAL EVENTS TEA AND TEACUPS, A SIP N’ PAINT EVENT Join Dean Road Ceramics Studio as we partner with Bee Auburn (Auburn Parks and Recreation and Auburn University College of Agriculture) for the first Tea and Teacups Sip N’ Paint event. On Tuesday, June 19, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. participants will be able to enjoy ceramics, fun and tea in a whole new way! Cari Cleckler, Art Education Specialist and Dean Road Ceramics Studio Coordinator for the City of Auburn, will lead us in painting florals on teacups. We will be joined by a representative from Bee Auburn to discuss how teas are pollinated and there will be teas to sample – with many pulled from gardens right here in Auburn! This unique event is for painters ages 21 and older. Participant fees will cover materials costs and studio fees. Participants can come with friends, paint a work of art and learn about tea and sip a BYOB beverage. Light snacks will be provided. SPECIAL EVENTS NATIONAL PARKS AND REC MONTH MOVIE MADNESS TOURNAMENT For the second year in a row, Auburn Parks and Recreation will be celebrating National Parks and Recreation Month with the Movie Madness Tournament in July! Each week, residents will be able to vote on their favorite movies from a 16-movie pool and eventually choose which will be crowned the Movie Madness Champion and screened during our End-of-Summer Movie night on Saturday, August 4 at Duck Samford Park. A pool of 16 family-friendly movies will be released on Monday, June 18 and voting will begin on Monday, July 2. Voting begins at 8 a.m. on the Monday of each new week and closes at 8 p.m. on the Friday of each tournament week. Beginning Wednesday, August 1, participants can pick up worksheets for the scavenger hunt at any Parks and Recreation facility or find it on the City of Auburn website, printed in select newspapers and on Facebook. The worksheet features 25 itty-bitty sights in historic Pine Hill Cemetery (located on Armstrong Street), along with four (4) bonus sites in Auburn’s four other cemeteries: Baptist Hill Cemetery, Memorial Park Cemetery, Town Creek Cemetery and Westview Cemetery. Participants will find these sights and write the location on the worksheets.
