Regal Entertainment Group has their “Summer Movie Express” promotion, featuring G and PG-rated movies at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for only $2. https://www.regmovies.com/static/en/us/promotions/summer-movie-express 21
Tips for Summer • Schedule fun • Resist the urge to overschedule • Get together with friends • Set aside time each day – for you and for them! • Encourage your child to try something new this summer • Limit technology • Create structure and set boundaries • Make Time for Learning. Set aside time for your student to read each day during the summer break -- 15 to 30 minutes per day is all it takes! • Take a family trip to the library, and find books that both (a) capture your child's interest, and (b) stretch you child's reading skills. • Take trips to museums, zoos, and nature sites. But don't merely attend. Help children enjoy hands-on experiences and engage in family conversations. • Can't find an affordable summer camp? Create your own. • Read, read, read! – Summer learning loss is real! 22
For Parents • ELA/Reading Ideas: • Students should be encouraged to read books. Ensure your child is allowed to choose topics and books of interest. Ask them about the book during dinner or other convenient times. • Hold a conversation and discuss what your child has read. Ask probing questions and connect the events to his or her life. • Ask your child who, what, when, where, why and how questions. • Help your child go back to the text to support his or her answers. • To help motivate you child to read, listen to audio books with your child on long car rides. • To help your child remember key points while reading create hashtags for each section or chapter.
For Parents • Language/Cultural Ideas: • Speak to your child in your home language. Children can learn many languages at once. Using your home language will not confuse them, even if they speak English! The skills and strategies you practice in your home language will transfer as they acquire English. • Share stories, songs, games, and rhymes from your culture. Children love stories! Share family stories as well as songs, games, and rhymes from your childhood. • Share special traditions and recipes from home. Talk about important traditions from your culture and choose some special recipes to prepare together 24
For Parents • Math Ideas: • While setting the table ask your child "How many more forks do you need?", "If there are a total of 12 forks and knives how many people are having dinner?"...base your level of questions to the age and ability of your children. • While at a store/restaurant/mall have your child, • Weigh the fruit and vegetables and calculate the total for each, maybe even approximate the tax (depending on age and ability). • Estimate the total amount of items and what the total cost would be, with and w/out tax. • Estimate the amount of discount on shoes/clothes based on how much percent is taken off the item. • Estimate the tip on a bill.
For Parents • Social Studies Ideas: • If possible, experience visiting historical sites and/or museums. Read plaques and descriptions on displays and monuments to learn the history of the item. There are also many virtual tours of historical sites and museums you can take with your family. • Play 'eye spy" a license plate game or download the Plate Spot license plate game app. After, you can locate and plot the state on a map of the United States. Ask age- appropriate questions: • What region of the United States is the state located? • What direction would you have to drive to visit the state? • What is the state motto?...Why is that the state motto?
For Parents • Science Ideas: • If your child asks you why something is true or why something happens assist them in researching or experimenting to find out the answer. • Perform household science experiments, these can be done using typical household items and can be found online (I.e. https://www.weareteachers.com/easy-science- experiments/). • Encourage your child to predict what they think will happen when making observations and conducting experiments. Let them know if their predictions are not supported by the results. Discuss what actually happens and why. • Watch a nature or science show on television. Public television stations have great programs such as NOVA, NATURE and Bill Nye the Science Guy to name a few.
