*Hemingway’s Cuba Instructor: William Woods, Ph.D. When famed Nobel Prize recipient Ernest Hemingway left his beloved Lookout Farm, Finca Vigia, in Cuba on July 25, 1960, he had no idea he would never again see the place he called home for over twenty years, his sanctuary where he had composed The Old Man and the Sea, A Moveable Feast and Islands in the Stream. The reasons for the abrupt departure remain mysterious. Some have suggested Hemingway had grown disenchanted with the brutal tactics favored by the revolutionary Fidel Castro. Others say Hemingway was ordered home by the US State Department for his own safety. More likely, the departure was carefully orchestrated by his concerned wife, Mary, who knew the great writer was battling crippling depression, anxiety and alcoholism. This lecture will focus on Hemingway's final days in Cuba and include a brief description of a recent trip by the speaker and his Schreiner University students to see Hemingway's Cuban house and his other famous literary haunts. 1 Session Tuesday July 20 6:00-8:00 pm $20 What is DLI?
