For more information about the department, please visit our website at www.qed.qld.gov.au We provide services through the following service delivery areas: • State Schools Division delivers high quality education to more than 70 percent of all Queensland school students at prep, primary and secondary levels. • Policy, Performance and Planning Division takes a strategic approach to driving the business of the portfolio, across, schooling, early childhood, education and care and Indigenous education policy. The division engages in policy development and intergovernmental relations, legislation, governance and planning, and monitors and reviews the department’s performance framework. Since November 2020, the division hosts the Office of Racing, which provides policy advice and administers programs to build a sustainable Queensland racing industry. • The Early Childhood and Education Improvement Division is responsible for the strategic management and implementation of early learning and development reforms, coordination of early childhood education and care programs, approval and regulation of services, supporting assessment and ratings and the quality improvement for all early childhood development and education improvement in Queensland. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and supporting school performance and improvement through the leadership and management of a school review program. Commercial-in-Confidence 4
• The Finance and Assurance Services Division ensures a dedicated focus on the department’s delivery on our substantial financial investments and commitments. The division incorporates the department’s finance and procurement functions and works closely with Internal Audit. • Infrastructure Services Division is responsible for sustainable investment in Education. It has three service streams, being asset provision, asset management and administration, and asset advice and advocacy. • The People and Corporate Services Division consists of Human Resources, Strategic Communication and Engagement, Legal Services and Information and Technologies. • The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) contributes to the Government’s strategic objectives in the areas of workplace health and safety, electrical safety, workers’ compensation, industrial relations and labour hire regulation and seeks to improve performance in these areas through regulatory and policy frameworks and the provision of evidenced-based services and advice. Grace Grace was first elected to State Parliament in October 2007 and remained the Member for Brisbane Central until March 2012. She was re-elected as the Member for Brisbane Central in January 2015, in November 2017 after the seat was re-named McConnel, and again in October 2020. Grace was appointed Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs in December 2015 and successfully implemented a series of important legislative reforms including the Racing Integrity Act, the Multicultural Recognition Act and the Industrial Relations Act 2016. Following the 2017 state election, Grace was appointed Minister for Education and Minister for Industrial Relations – both areas she is passionate about. Grace understands the importance of education and her tireless advocacy in this area saw the new Fortitude Valley State Secondary College open in January 2020. Grace was recently appointed Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing following the 2020 state election. Throughout her career, Grace has had extensive board experience with organisations including Sunsuper, Energex and the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund. She has worked with local community organisations in her electorate including P&Cs, the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, Teneriffe Progress Association, Queensland Aids Council (QuAC), Fortitude Valley Chamber of Commerce and many others. Grace has lived her whole life in her electorate where she and her husband Michael raised their daughter, Alex. Commercial-in-Confidence 6
Michael is the Director-General of the Department of Education. Michael is an accomplished senior executive with over 20 years of public sector leadership with extensive experience in education as a teacher, school principal, Regional Director and Deputy Secretary. Throughout his career, Michael has delivered outcomes for Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand across a variety of portfolios, including education, community services and health. He is a former Deputy Secretary with Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services and has held Director-General positions with the Australian Capital Territory Government’s Community Services and Health Directorates. Michael holds a Masters in Educational Administration (First Class Hons), an Executive Masters in Public Administration through the Australia New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Teaching Commercial-in-Confidence 7

The position requires strong professional leadership and management capabilities. The role requires an ability to lead and manage the provision of people and corporate services to a large and complex organisation to deliver government priorities along with excellence in client service delivery. The Deputy Director-General is to provide high level leadership particularly by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. • Appointment to this position is subject to entering a written contract of employment under the Public Service Act 2008. • The successful appointee will be required to give a statement of her/his pecuniary and non-pecuniary interests within one (1) month of taking up the appointment. • The successful applicant will be required to travel interstate and overseas as necessary. • To be eligible for this position, applicants must not be an undisclosed bankrupt, nor have ever been found guilty of official misconduct under the Crime and Misconduct Act 2001. • As part of the selection process applicants may be expected to undertake skills assessments activities including on-line psychometric testing. • An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant. The Total Remuneration Value listed against the position includes: • Executive Vehicle Allowance (EVA) • Employer superannuation contributions • 17.5% annual leave loading. • In addition to salary and optional benefits the appointee will be entitled to Queensland Public Service leave entitlements including four (4) weeks annual leave, cumulative sick leave and long service leave. • Upon appointment, the appointee may also be eligible to receive removal allowances and rental assistance. • A criminal history check will be initiated on the successful applicant. • A serious discipline history check may be initiated on the successful applicant.
