Letter from Activities Greetings from the Lifelong Learning corner of Senior Services for South Sound’s Activities program! I hope this finds you well. Let us all take a collective breath and relax a bit for a minute. It has been a hard year (and a half!) in so many ways, but like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, there have been some amazing acts of goodness, kindness, and heart- touching moments throughout this otherwise difficult time. I think of how Zoom has helped keep us all connected, and I just experienced that with our last Heartsparkle Players performance of the season, “Navigating These Times: Finding Hope, Connection, and Meaning.” For me, personally, this has been one of the blessings that has come out of the Pandemic. I thank Debe Edden and all of the performers for this wonderful gift. I choose to direct my focus to such beautiful moments and what I like to call, simply, “Good Stuff.” What is some of the good stuff, you may be asking? Well, I couldn’t me more grateful and excited for our continued online offerings through our Lifelong Learning Program, which includes everything in this catalog. I’m particularly grateful for the amazing faculty that have, in the past, and will continue, into the future, offer some incredible classes, satisfying our craving to learn new things and reflect on the nature of just about everything, through our Virtual Senior Academy. As we are starting to see glimpses of some sort of new normalcy in our lives, and with that, a day when our Senior Centers will be open again (the date is still unknown, but we should know soon!), we foresee that we will continue to have an online presence into the future. To some extent, Zoom is here to stay for a while. And, we are happy to announce that we will be offering some summer classes through our Virtual Senior Academy, as other opportunities (exercise classes, virtual hangout/social hours, and more). You can check them out here, in this catalog. In closing, I’d like to express my gratitude to Sara Thiessen, Allie Rennie, Jill Rector and Jay Wallerstedt for their efforts in keeping us connected, and I’d like to thank you for taking a chance and taking flight with us, out of the ashes towards the sun. And it will continue to get brighter. Please check our website often to check our status on reopening, at SouthSoundSeniors.org. You may also sign up to receive automatic emails from us by visiting our website and clicking on the button at the bottom which reads “Join Our Mailing List”. Be well, and we hope to see you at our senior centers in the near future! Chris Quimby, Senior Centers Director 2 Senior Services for South Sound
Virtual Senior Academy Summer Quarter 2021 Seasons of the Mind: Summer Break! with Margo Benedetto Mondays, 10:30 - 11:30 am • June 14 - July 5 General Public/Members: $48/$42 Join a weekly mindfulness community where we’ll add guided meditations, discussion and self-exploration to the summer’s other offerings of rest, relaxation and adventure. Compared to previous courses, this class will focus less on new material and more on building a fun and interactive community around our topics of interest and the beneficial practices of mindfulness. Open to all levels of experience. Your Teacher: Margo Benedetto is a certified mindfulness instructor and veteran classroom teacher in Washington State. She was a leader in bringing mindfulness education to the Centralia School District from 2015-2020, where she designed and taught the class “Strength and Conditioning for the Mind.” She continues to provide personal and professional development in mindfulness for individuals and groups and enjoys the variety of classroom settings she finds for her work, including Thurston County Dog 4-H, Senior Services for South Sound and North Thurston Public Schools. Power in Eden: The Emergence of Gender Hierarchies in the Ancient World, Part 1 with Bruce Lerro Mondays, 2:00 - 4:00 pm • June 14 - July 15 General Public/Members: $48/$42 Why do men monopolize most technological, political and economic power in complex societies? Have the inequalities in power between men and women always existed, or did gender stratification have an origin in time? If gender stratification has an origin in time, does it occur all at once, or does it happen subtly and gradually over thousands of years? Bronze Age agricultural states were the most oppressive societies to women in history, yet we are also hard-pressed to find instances of mobilization and revolution. Why was there no feminist movement in the ancient world? This course will be in taught in two parts. Part I is a four-week offering in the summer. Part II will be a continuation in an eight-week course in the fall. Each part can be taken independently of the other without losing meaning. Or both? What has guided our dealings with other nations in our past? What should? Have we practiced our often-touted principles in relations with the international community? Should we? How have we taught this history to ourselves? How would our neighbors, near and far, tell our story? What has been the role of force, diplomacy, foreign aid, altruism in our past actions? Some great questions that will link past realities with current challenges and decisions. Come learn what was and share what you think should be in our international relations story. Your Teacher: Gery earned his B.A. at St. Martin’s, M.Ed from Western Washington University, and has 40+ years of teaching experience from High School to University level, State Capitol & Senior Communities. We understand that tuition for our Academic and Specialty Classes may be a hardship for some seniors. Why do we offer certain activities for free, and charge tuition for classes? These classes are taught by our faculty who are professional degreed teachers. Faculty develop curriculum specifically for our programs, and they spend hours doing it. This way, we can attract and retain highly qualified teachers from all over the Puget Sound. However, we want to make classes accessible for everyone, that’s why we offer two 1/2 scholarships per class. The teachers get paid and Senior Services waives our portion. How Do You Qualify? • Please call Senior Services for South Sound at our Olympia Senior Center site: 360.586.6181 ext 103.
