ABOUT AIMS The Australian Institute of Marine Science is a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Australian Institute of Marine Science Act 1972 (AIMS Act). As Australia's tropical marine research agency, it is our mission to provide the research and knowledge of Australia's tropical marine estate required to support growth in its sustainable use, effective environmental management and protection of its unique ecosystems. To accomplish our mission, AIMS delivers independent science to help realise three key long-term impacts for the nation: • Improve the health and resilience of marine and coastal ecosystems across northern Australia. • Create economic, social and environmental net benefits for marine industries and coastal communities. • Protect coral reefs and other tropical marine environments from the effects of climate change. ABOUT AIMS’ FACILITIES AND SUPPLY SERVICES TEAM AIMS’ State-of-the-art infrastructure underpins our long-term, large-scale and wide-ranging research, and is housed in our three facilities which provides staff, visiting researchers and commercial clients a range of modern facilities. Our Facilities and Supply services team provide a range of enabling support services across AIMS locations. AIMS has facilities in three locations across Australia which are home to laboratory and administrative facilities that support field activities extending from the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef on the east coast to Shark Bay and the Abrolhos Islands in the west. Our headquarters is at Cape Ferguson, about 50 kilometres from Townsville. In Darwin, our Arafura Timor Research Facility (ATRF) is located adjacent to the Charles Darwin University campus. Whilst AIMS in Perth is co- located within the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) at the University of Western Australia (UWA)'s Crawley campus. Our research in Darwin takes place at the Arafura Timor Research Facility (ATRF), only 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre, within the boundaries of the North Australia campus of the Australian National University and adjacent to the Charles Darwin University. ABOUT OUR FACILITIES OFFICER POSITION About this Opportunity As a member of our Facilities and Supply Services team, our Facilities Officer (Darwin) is responsible for monitoring operational and maintenance performance at the AIMS Darwin Facility, including the on-site co-ordination of general site service contractors. In this role, you will ensure that AIMS facilities are capable of supporting to the ATRF based AIMS science staff to achieve research goals. You will be the on-site contact for contract services, including Facilities Maintenance, Security Services, Cleaning, Grounds maintenance & pest services, as well as the role of the ATRF HSE officer. About you Relying on your trade certificate in Construction, Mechanical or Electrical and/or experience in a similar facilities officer role you will monitor the on-site building management, the facilities maintenance and access control systems and undertake regular auditing of contractor performance to ensure quality assurance. Your well-developed verbal and written communication skills, along with your proven trustworthiness, honesty and ability to work with minimal supervision, will ensure that you are able to responsively and respectively represent AIMS as the Darwin on-site contact for facilities enquiries, general services, science support, visitors, HSE, freight dispatch and deliveries. Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS for the term of the appointment, depending on the relevant Department of Home Affairs current policies. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Your responses to the following Key Selection Criteria must evidence your suitability for this exciting opportunity within the scope of the position description (pages 8-10). Essential • Trade certificate in Construction, Mechanical or Electrical and/or experience in a similar facilities officer role. • Demonstrated experience in facilities and general site maintenance services and oversight of maintenance of associated equipment (e.g., vehicles, vessels). • Demonstrated experience managing on-site contractors. • Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety, including pro-actively implementing safety improvements, risk reduction strategies and improving environmental performance. • Experience with computerised systems and packages including Microsoft office, building and maintenance management systems, access control and surveillance systems. • Current manual Class C Drivers Licence. POSITION DESCRIPTION: FACILITIES OFFICER (DARWIN) Team Membership: Facilities and Supply Services (5601) Program: Operations and Infrastructure Services Primary Location: Darwin, Northern Territory Direct Supervisor: Facilities and Supply Manager (21036) Position Classification: AIMS AOF Level 3 Enhanced Functional Area: Technical Services Position Summary: Responsible for monitoring operational and maintenance performance at the AIMS Darwin Facility, including the on-site co-ordination of general site service contractors, HSE responsibilities and contribution to vehicle and vessel fleet maintenance. Position Responsibilities: To provide facilities support to the AIMS science staff to achieve research goals. On-site contact for contract services, including Facilities Maintenance, Security Services, Cleaning, Grounds maintenance & pest services. Undertake regular auditing of contractor performance to ensure quality assurance. Monitor the on-site building management, the facilities maintenance and access control systems. On-site contact for facilities enquiries, general services, science support, visitors, freight dispatch and deliveries. Provide effective communication and teamwork practices to ensure a professional service is provided to staff. Provide logistics and administrative support to AIMS science staff as required. Undertake the role of AIMS Darwin HSE officer: site safety inductions, working with team members to ensure workplace is maintained to HSE standards and acting as a conduit between Darwin and the institute wide HSE committee. Contribute to the maintenance of the vehicle and vessel fleet of the AIMS Darwin Facility. Liaise with field staff to ensure vessel availability and suitability for science deliverables. Ensure the timely registration, servicing, and maintenance of ATRF Vehicles. Ensure that ATRF Vessels are compliant with relevant regulations and AIMS policies, safe and well-maintained. Submit end-of-month journals for vessel and vehicle use and ensure logbooks are up-to date. Comply with AIMS’ workplace safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe workplace. Comply with AIMS’ Intellectual Property policies and procedures to ensure AIMS intellectual assets are captured, managed, and protected. Comply with AIMS’ Code of Conduct ensuring the standards of conduct required of an AIMS staff member are upheld. ABOUT DARWIN Darwin (NT) Facility Our research in Darwin takes place at the Arafura Timor Research Facility (ATRF), only 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre, within the boundaries of the North Australia campus of the Australian National University and adjacent to the Charles Darwin University. The Arafura–Timor region, in which Darwin is a scientific and commercial hub, is linguistically, culturally, and biologically diverse, which provides valuable links between the biophysical and social sciences. Finding us From the Darwin CBD, follow the Stuart Highway for several kilometres, then turn left onto Bagot Road and head towards Casuarina. Stay on Bagot Road until it becomes Trower Road, turn left onto Dripstone Road, and then right into Ellengowan Road at the roundabout in front of Charles Darwin University. The sign at the front of the complex reads: ‘North Australia Research Unit and Arafura Timor Research Facility’. There is reserved car parking within. Darwin Traditional Owner Group Darwin is treasured country to its traditional owners, the Larrakia people, who are prominent and active members of the local community. The traditional owners of Darwin are the Larrakia (saltwater) people. Larrakia country runs far beyond the municipal boundaries of Darwin, covering the area from the Cox Peninsula in the west to Adelaide River in the east. The Larrakia people established the first trade routes in the region, trading with the Tiwi, Wagait and Wulna people as well as with Indonesian fishermen. Their stories, songs and ceremonies echo the strong connection and understanding they have with the saltwater country.
