Introducing… Werribee Area A thirty minutes’ drive from the Melbourne CBD via the Princes Freeway is the suburb of Werribee and the waterfront suburb of Werribee South. They lie in the heart of the largest growing and third fastest growing region in Victoria, Wyndham City. Melbourne is presently the fastest growing capital city in Australia, the second biggest city by population in Australia and will become the nation’s largest city with a population breaching 9 million in 2056. According to the Global Liveability Index in 2016, Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria, was the most liveable city in the world for the sixth year running. A survey undertaken by the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine in 2014 awarded Melbourne the title of ‘friendliest city in the world.’ On top of these achievements, Melbourne is considered one of the education cities of Australia, as it’s home to ten internationally-renown, top-class universities, was voted the second most student friendly city in the world in 2016 and is situated in Victoria, the second most educated state in Australia in 2011. Additionally, Melbourne is a globally recognised medical hub for its cancer research and treatment and is supported by Victoria’s status as an international leader in neuroscience, medical device design and infectious diseases. Considered one of the strongest performing financial centres in the Asia Pacific region, Melbourne is in the top thirty cities in the world on the Global Financial Centres Index. Its position in the global financial industry is aided by Australia’s biggest airport and busiest container port being situated in Melbourne and by the strength and quality of Victoria’s economy. It’s firstly, bigger than most south-east Asian nations and secondly, has maintained a triple A credit rating, the only state to have such a prestigious rating in Australia, for ten years running. Forecasts suggest that the Werribee area will greatly benefit from its place in the award-winning city of Melbourne and is set for massive population and employment growth. Werribee and Werribee South area’s population will double to 79,500 people in 2036 and Wyndham City’s population will reach 361,400 people by 2031. Such a huge, future population requires support in the form of dwellings and jobs. Between 2011 and 2036, residential dwellings in Werribee and Werribee South will double, with an estimated 14,500 new dwellings to be provided to residents. Major residential development in progress and planned is the source of these dwellings and the influx of new housing has created demand from couples and families. From 2014 to 2019, the Wyndham City region expects an employment growth of 11% or more. Between 2006 and 2031, the residents of Werribee and surrounding suburbs can expect access to at least 40,000 new jobs. Suburb developments, employment precincts, employment clusters, business parks and projects in-progress or planned will be the major contributors to this number of jobs. A diverse range of amenities are easily accessible to those living in the Werribee area. These include childcare centres, special schools and top-performing schools like the Heathdale Christian College and the Westbourne Grammar School. Victoria University’s and the University of Melbourne’s Werribee campuses, the Werribee Mercy Public Hospital and the Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre are all situated within a 15 minutes’ drive of the Werribee CBD. Nearby sport-related amenities include golf courses, a racecourse, an equestrian centre and the Aqua Pulse centre. Parks, libraries, an events centre, a cultural centre, Wyndham Harbour, the RAAF Museum and South Beach are other amenities. Famous attractions include the Werribee Open Range Zoo, the Werribee Park Mansion, the Shadowfax Winery and the State Rose Garden. Bus stops and the Werribee Railway Station in the Werribee CBD allow travel to surrounding suburbs and to the Melbourne CBD. Industry & Employment Wyndham City region’s labour force in March 2016 consisted of approximately 116,300 people and is the second largest labour force out of all regional labour forces in Victoria. Over 24,800 people or 21% of the region’s labour force worked in the Werribee and Werribee South area. According to forecasts, the Western Growth Corridor of Melbourne, which encompasses the Wyndham City region, could generate 90,000 to 125,000 new jobs from 2014 to 2031. Western Growth Corridor’s employment growth is one of the reasons why Melbourne City will become Australia’s largest business centre by 2051. Between November 2014 and November 2019, Werribee and nearby areas anticipate an employment growth of 11% or more and between 2006 and 2031, Werribee and surrounding suburbs can expect access to at least 40,000 new jobs. Over 7,000 of these jobs could be created via the completion of the currently developing Tarneit North, Tarneit West and Point Cook West suburbs. Other jobs will be produced via employment precincts and national employment clusters. Nearby employment precincts include the Truganina Employment Precinct and the East Werribee Employment Precinct and Cluster. The Truganina Employment Precinct could produce 10,000 to 15,000 new jobs over the course of its development. A couple of minutes’ drive north-east of the Werribee CBD is the East Werribee Employment Precinct and Cluster. It currently accommodates 7,100 jobs and is expected to generate another 58,000 new jobs over the next thirty years. Once complete, East Werribee will be the largest development to have occurred in the Greater Melbourne area. Further north-east, a mere 20 minutes from the Werribee CBD is the Sunshine Employment Cluster. Approximately 13,800 jobs are currently supported, with initiatives in place to encourage future job creation. In-progress industrial and business parks will also create jobs and some of these parks can be found in the Infrastructure section of this profile. Statistics from the 2011 Census identify the manufacturing industry (12%), the retail trade industry (11%) and the construction industry (10%) as the top three industries by employment in the Werribee and Werribee South area. Wyndham City as a whole, is supported by a number of key industries. Listed in order of the size of their economic output, the top three key industries are manufacturing, transport, postal and warehousing and real estate services. Forecasts suggest that the real estate services industry will grow significantly alongside the advancing development of Tarneit North, Tarneit West, Point Cook West and other surrounding suburbs and will therefore, remain a top industry over the coming years. As at 2015, the GRP (Gross Regional Product) of the Wyndham City region was approximately $7.31 billion. From 2011 to 2015, the GRP increased by 22% and from now and into the future, the GRP is expected to increase at a similar, rapid rate, due to the continuing development of the aforementioned suburbs.
