Studying in Britain (UCAS) – Étudier au Royaume-Uni When and How to Apply – Quand et comment Candidater CALENDAR CALENDRIER April 2020 La plupart des diapositives sont en anglais
Timetable for Applications BEFORE JUNE 30TH Candidates should complete this Googledoc before May 30th in order to register with the school (not UCAS). This is compulsory for all applicants Candidates must make an appointment with the UCAS coordinator (james.titheridge@lyceefrancais.be) before June 30th if intending to apply to Oxford/Cambridge and/or to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies. Predicted grades will be provided by the school by September of next year. Students should not make specific requests for these but may consult Terminale teachers (from next year) to discuss and in some cases review them. Remember that the UCAS web site may be open in August but you cannot begin until you receive the buzzword that will identify you as a Jean Monnet student. YOU MUST NOT TRY TO APPLY AS A PRIVATE STUDENT. The “Buzzword” is confidential and must not be passed on to anyone within or outside this school. 4
Timetable for Applications BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1ST Use the UCAS and individual university websites to: o Decide WHAT you want to study. o Decide WHERE you want to go. Write a complete PERSONAL STATEMENT first draft. Keep 1ère school reports available but do not translate them. o Most universities will not require these. Where possible, attend open days or visit the universities you are considering o This will be difficult in the current context but do not worry, universities have an enormous amount of information online, including virtual tours. Make of the most of your time at home to look through these. o Do not hesitate to contact universities by phone or email with your questions. 5
Timetable for Applications BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1ST Make sure you know what the English language requirements are for the universities your are selecting (see next slide). Prepare a portfolio if you are intending to take an art-related course (check UCAS and university websites for specific requirements) Check if your course will require you to take specific admissions tests and find out where these can be taken in Brussels or elsewhere. o It is vital that you prepare for these if you are intending to apply to do medicine, veterinary studies, dentistry or any course at Oxbridge and some other courses, such as law. o If you are unsure whether or not your course requires an admissions test, consult the course website Students may contact the UCAS coordinator (James Titheridge) by email or through ENT (james.titheridge@lyceefrancais.be) if they have any specific questions. 6
Applying to the UK: English language requirements You may have to take a specific English language test, such as IELTS Most universities will demand at least 6.5 up to 7.5 or more in an IELTS test, equivalent to B2+/C1 CEFR level Students in OIB are usually (but not systematically) exempt from specific language testing, especially when producing documented evidence IGCSE/CAE certificates, grade C and upwards may also be accepted Students should contact universities individually to find out about specific English language requirements If students have any problems getting language qualifications recognised, they should contact the UCAS coordinator. IN ALL CASES, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO PROVE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS UNTIL AUGUST 31ST OF THE YEAR YOU ARE PLANNING TO START YOUR COURSE o So there is no need to rush to take an IELTS test! 7
Timetable for Applications:Terminale Term 1 Before September 15th 2020 o New students to the LFJM applying to the UK (or other Anglophone universities) must register with the UCAS coordinator Between September 1st and October 15th 2020 o Oxbridge/medical studies applicants ONLY make a SECOND appointment with the UCAS coordinator for tracking and support of applications o All students receive a message with the name of their teacher referee and the UCAS “buzzword” so that they can start their application For October 15th 2020 o All non-Oxbridge applicants must contact teacher referee and make an initial appointment to review personal statement and provide information for the reference that the teacher will write o Applicants should consult the UCAS website for information and advice about university choices, personal statements and completing the UCAS form o Applicants may consult the UCAS coordinator(s) for further advice about university choices and personal statements 8
Timetable for Applications:Terminale Term 1 Early October 2020 o Candidates invited to attend a Saturday morning personal statement writing session with English- speaking parents and teachers. This will include preparation for Oxbridge interviews o Candidates will be expected to have at least a first draft of their personal statement ready by this date For December 15th 2020 o Students complete their UCAS application procedure o Teacher referees add the reference letter and predicted grades to UCAS application and ensure they are sent to UCAS by January 15th. o Students may make further appointments if necessary with teacher referee/coordinator o Online application validated once process entirely completed THIS TIMETABLE MUST BE RESPECTED – LATE APPLICATIONS WILL 9 NOT BE CONSIDERED
Tle : Deadlines For Completion of Online Applications “Oxbridge” and Medical Schools: o deadline = October 1st 2019 All other universities: o deadline = December 15th 2019 THIS TIMETABLE MUST BE RESPECTED – LATE 1 APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED 0
What Happens Next? Before January 15th 2020 o The UCAS coordinator will validate applications and send them off to UCAS o This can only be done once the UCAS form has been entirely completed and payment made For March 31st 2020 o Applicants should receive offers from some or all universities selected o This is not guaranteed, however, and students without offers should make an appointment with the UCAS advisor to look at alternatives, such as UCAS EXTRA o Universities will make conditional offers. This means the overall grade a university will require an applicant to get at the baccalaureate as well as, in some cases, grades for specific subjects 1 o See next slide for some more non-contractual information to help you make choices. 1

What Happens Next? For May 5th 2020 o Students reply to UCAS, accepting two offers, a “firm” acceptance and an “insurance” acceptance o Students decline all other offers When the Results Come Out o Applicants may get a place on both choices, depending how well their exams go. They can then confirm their firm and reject their insurance choice o Applicants may not get their firm choice grades but do well enough to accept their insurance choice o Applicants may not get either firm or insurance offers but be offered an alternative by the university/college – a 'changed course offer' (which they'll need to accept or decline) o Applicants may not get a place, but they can search through the UCAS Clearing service to see what courses still have vacancies. In this case, it is strongly advised to make an appointment with the UCAS coordinator o Applicants may do better than expected and consider a new, more ambitious choice altogether 1 through UCAS adjustment 3
