FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MAY JUNE 2021 Student Career News Timely Career Updates from Sun West School Division Sun West Student Leadership Conference: What’s Behind the Mask? Student leaders from across Sun West School Division successfully delivered their first-ever Virtual Student Leadership Conference on April 23rd. Some highlights: -Director and Board Welcome -Leadership and Wellness Breaks led by Sun West Student Leaders -Keynote: Jeff A.D. Martin -Session Presenters: LIWL, Magician, Team Sun West, Sun West Youth Consultation Team -Special Appearance: St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs Thank you student delegates, supervising Staff/Administrators, etc. for helping to coordinate this opportunity at our school. We are thrilled to report RECORD attendance with over 500 student delegates joining this student-led conference. The Sun West Student Leadership Program is open to Grades 8 through 12 students. This is an incredible opportunity to meet new people, and gain valuable 21st Century Skills while working towards shared goals. FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MAY JUNE 2021 On Track To Graduate? It is important for Grade 9 through 12 students and families to be aware of graduation requirements. It is a great time to take a close look at where you are at in relation to high school course planning and plans for life after high school. It is important to be aware of interests, skills, future goals, etc. in addition to becoming familiar with current Saskatchewan Graduation requirements and pre-requisite learning if planning to pursue post- secondary studies. Below is information for Saskatchewan Graduation (Regular Program): Saskatchewan High School Credit Options Document Planning for high school courses begins early. By Grade 9, students need to be seriously thinking about their choices. When mapping out high school courses, students must consider post-secondary interests and requirements and how they may impact choices while in high school. The Math and Science Pathways are worth investigating when planning forward. 2
FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MAY JUNE 2021 * Grade 12 Reminders: Correspondence: For students who have applied for post-secondary institutions for the Fall of 2020, please keep checking your emails or post-secondary accounts for updates regarding admissions, course registration, etc. Transcripts: As always, your official high school transcripts must be ordered through the Government of Saskatchewan. If you require assistance with ordering transcripts for post- secondary purposes or even for yourself, reach out to your Career Counsellor. Local Scholarships: All of our school communities are different, but Grade 12’s will have access to various ‘local’ scholarship opportunities. Inquire with your Career Counsellor for details. Thank you to our local and area businesses for making these generous scholarship opportunities available for students. Student Loans: Student loans can greatly assist young people when it comes to financing their post-secondary education. As far as we understand, application forms for the 2021-2022 school year will be available online in June. For more information on these opportunities and support with the life/career planning process, please contact your school’s Career Counsellor. News A. Our Career Development LEAD Teacher Team has created a Sun West Career Development Facebook Page to help students/families stay up-to-date with timely information. B. Connected: Young Women Exploring Careers on May 13 from 4:30 to 6:00PM. This virtual event links young female students from grade 10-12 with female mentors from a vast spectrum of career backgrounds. The registration date has past, but there may still be an opportunity to register if interested. 4

The 2021 edition is available and has tons of relevant information and ideas for students including the Saskatchewan Job Chart! D. Say Magazine: Say Magazine has been sharing inspiring stories about Indigenous Peoples since 2002. SAY Magazine celebrates First Nations, Métis and Inuit ingenuity by sharing success stories and stories of resilience. Free copies can be obtained. E. SIEC: The Saskatoon Industry Education Council is hosting a number of Career Spotlights. If you missed past sessions, you may view the recordings. RDIEC: The Regina District Industry Education Council continues to host a series of online Career Spotlights which are preserved on their YouTube Channel. Students and Parents are encouraged to check them out. March brings about another incredible line up of live spotlights. Check out their schedule at RDIEC. F. RDIEC is offering Summer Skills Camps for grade 7-9 students. The following camps are available: Culinary Arts, Small Engines, Robotics, Computer Gaming, Electrical/Electronics, Photography, and Welding. These forms can also be found on the RDIEC website by clicking on the Summer Programs Block on right hand side and “Summer Skills Camp.” Contact RDIEC for more information. G. Interested in the Skilled Trades? Check out the list of Designated Trades within our province. Also, see the Entrance Requirements for Apprenticeship Training. Other opportunities to consider while in high school: a. Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Program helps students explore opportunities in the skilled trades. Ask your Career Counsellor for information on this awesome program. Benefits include 100 hours of trade time/level completed, waiver of indenturing fee, waiver of first level of technical training tuition, etc. 5

Skills Canada: 2021 Virtual Skills Expo is a free opportunity for students of all ages to demonstrate their abilities in a variety of skilled trades and technologies as well as learn about industry professionals and employers from a variety of virtual display booths. Participating in a scavenger hunt gives the chance to win everything from a webcam to a hoverboard, a TV to an Xbox. It will be held May 7, 9:00-3:00. I. Co-op Camp: This is a summer student leadership program for youth aged 12 to 18 offered at Candle Lake and Last Mountain Lake. This is an opportunity for personal development and leadership training while having fun. Contact SCA for info. J. University of Toronto: On Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 pm (CST), the U of T will be hosting an information session for Grade 9-11 Saskatchewan Students who may be considering applying to the U of T in the future. The session will cover information about what the U of T has to offer, and how to apply. To receive the Zoom link, register by following this LINK. K. Are you a Grade 11 or 12 student who want to learn a new language? Explore is a 5 week language-learning program for students who want to learn French as an additional language. Participating students are eligible to receive a $2200 bursary and have the opportunity to experience another region of Canada. L. Communicating for Agriculture Education Program: A unique opportunity to help students gain agricultural work experience in various parts of the world. M. Neil Squire Society – is a non-profit organization that offers programs to assist individuals with disabilities in becoming job-ready, finding employment, etc. Clients must be 15 years of age and have a self-disclosed disability. (306) 781-6023. N. Dreaming of Summer? You may wish to begin seeking part time/summer, etc. employment. Students can watch a one hour live presentation to learn more about the MRU experience, program offerings, admission requirements, application process, tuition, etc. Register here. d. Virtual Drop-in Admission Planning Sessions – These run most Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Register here. I. NAIT J. Olds College: a. Join the Virtual Discovery Day on May 7th to explore programs and meet with faculty and current students. Apply for free! . b. Olds College is offering two Introduction to Veterinary Medicine for Teens courses on August 17-20 and 24-27. Students between the ages of 13-16 will have hands-on experiences and learn about the various roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Medical Receptionists, Veterinary Technical Assistants, Animal Health Technologists and Veterinarians. Sask Poly recently experienced a cyber attack.They have since sent notification of access letters to students who successfully applied prior to the cyber attack. All applicants should check their MySaskPolytech email (also junk email) for information regarding their application status. New applications are now being accepted as they receive Ministry of Education Transcripts. c. Continuous Education/Flexible Learning Courses have not been fully restored. A Free 33 Week Welding Applied Certificate is aimed to encourage groups including, but no limited to, women, Indigenous peoples, newcomers to Canada, persons with disabilities, and those currently underemployed, to explore a career in the skilled trades. McMaster University offers various tours including virtual tours. W. University of Regina a. Grade 11 Students watch for U of R Grade 11 Week from May 17th to 21st. b. Join an Information Session on May 18th (6:30 to 7:15) to learn more about the U of R and available programming c. Ask a Recruiter Drop-in Session s are available every Tuesday from 11:30 - 1:00. d. Accepted to the U of R and wondering, “What’s Next?” Check out this page to be sure you are on track with planning. e. Need help with Course Registration? Join the Course Registration Days for help with Fall classes. Available till June 19th, 9:00 – 12:00pm. f. Fall U of R students should take time to become familiar with the Student Awards & Financial Need Office. g. Applications for fall 2021 are open for on-campus housing. Take a virtual tour. As an option when applying for residence, Living-Learning Communities are a great option to connect with a group of like-minded students. These groups receive tutoring support, workshops, wellness supports, etc. i. Thinking of taking a “Gap Year” but wish to have your post-secondary studies lined up? The U of R has an option for you to apply for to help you return the following year without reapplying. You must first be admitted to a program to apply for the gap year option. Contact Admissions for information. j. Flexible Learning Division offers fall classes for which students can complete courses from their own communities or homes. k. What is Business? Certificate in Ideation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship occurs May 18th from 4:30 -5:30 will show students what they can expect from a degree in Business Administration. l. Experience the Summer Bridge Program which runs from July 5th to August 27th. Student will participate in a variety of activities to support a successful transition to university. Apply by June 15th. Undergraduate Admissions Sessions can be helpful to learn about the undergrad experience, including programs, admission requirements, scholarships, etc. Check on available dates and times. c. U-START is an online pre-orientation session to help new USask students prepare for university. There are offerings available in May and June and participating colleges include Ag and Bioresources, Arts and Science, Business, and Engineering. d. U of S Learning Communities are small groups of students who share common interests, classes, etc. They meet for an hour and are led by 2 peer mentors. These can be so beneficial in successful transitions to University life. Sign up opens May 3rd at 12:00 noon. e. Students who do not meet USask’s English Language Proficiency Requirement are encouraged to apply for joint admission to their degree program of choice and the English for Academic Purposes Program. f. USASKSparks is a webinar series to help Grade 12 students discover their passions. Webinars are available May 4th, 10th and 18th from 10-11AM. g. Residence applications are open. University Summer Classes are a great way to get a start on the fall semester. Courses will be offered virtually. The College of Engineering is “Re-Engineering” the first year for Engineering Students. There are a number of videos created to explain these changes including the “What is Engineering” session. j. NEW! Biomedical Sciences – a revamped biomedical degree program. Precalculus 30 is recommended but Foundations of Math 30 is acceptable. k. NEW! Language Teacher Education Program l. Instagram Live events will be happening on May 6th at 3:00pm for College of Ag and Bioresources and May 13th for College of Arts and Science. m. St Peter’s College is situated near Humboldt and offers first year and numerous second year classes, including engineering and the new U of S Criminology and Addictions certificate. Details on opportunities are typically shared with students closer to Graduation. mycampusGPS - assists students by providing information related to scholarships and post secondary planning. View a Scholarship Workshops or Webinars such as this one by Jane Thompson, Executive Director of the TD Scholarships Community Leadership Program. Boost Your Chances of Securing a Grant, Bursary, or Scholarship Education Planning and Student Aid provides many useful tools for students and parents in relation to topics such as saving, budgeting, planning for an education, etc. Canada Student Grants and Loans Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship – provides eligible Grade 12 students with a $500 per year scholarship to a lifetime maximum of $2,000 based on need. See website for details. Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarships – $1000 scholarships are awarded to 120 Saskatchewan students who complete the Youth Apprenticeship passport. Each school nominates a potential candidate. Talk to your Career Counsellor for info.
