International Experiences When safe, Northcote Intermediate School offers superb international experiences including our China cultural exchange and our Business Innovation Technology Experience (BITE) trip to Silicon Valley and Seattle. The China trip gives students unparalleled cultural learning opportunities about China – visiting schools and great sights where students develop language and social understanding. The goal for the BITE trip is to foster a global mind set, make amazing connections and demystify tech giants before returning to NZ with connections and ideas about how students may make their mark on the world. Students return as confident, connected and worldly young adults who have had inspirational, unique first hand experiences – visiting organizations such as Google, Microsoft, Intel, Disney, and Amazon. Students gain skills, connections and attitudes for life-long success. We are currently in the process of establishing links with other organisations across the Pacific to carry out social actions. 9|Page
International Students Our school provides opportunities for both short and long-term International Students to study and grow with us. In most cases they stay with local families, sometimes those with a student currently attending our school. All International Students are welcomed into our regular classes. For those whose English is not yet at a level where they can learn effectively in the general classrooms, there is a dedicated classroom where an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher facilitates learning. As ESOL students’ proficiency in English develops, they transition until they are fully ready to integrate into our regular classrooms. There is a limited number of places for International Students and fees are set by the Board of Trustees annually. The school is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, overseen by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the Ministry of Education. We are also signatories with Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) who support us with our International Student programme. NIS hosts overseas teachers and leaders, educational researchers and advisors. Other visitors are also interested to see how we run our learning programmes. Many long-distance, long-term friendships have arisen from the hosting of International Students at NIS. Our school and our community is enriched by the presence of our international guests. Should you have any questions about our International Student Programme, contact: international@ni.school.nz 10 | P a g e

The Arts Music Music comes into play in many parts of the life of Northcote Intermediate from casual Talent Shows to formal programmes such as Wind Band, Rock Band and the specialist classroom music programme. Every child at NIS will be taught music in the classroom setting through our specialist programme within our ‘tech’ rotations. Students will have fun learning the basics of reading traditional music notation and explore creative and improvisational skills using percussion, guitar/ukulele and keyboard. These classes currently run on Thursdays and Fridays. Jon Pickford runs our RockBand programme (currently on Wednesdays). Groups of students are auditioned and put together in groups to form rock bands and vocal groups. They are then coached in the art of playing together and performing. Most groups will enter the Bandquest later in the year in which NIS has a formidable reputation! Cameron Allen is head of music at Northcote College but he also coordinates our Stage Band (beginner players) and our Big Band (more advanced players). Students have lessons on their individual instruments at an allotted time during the week (usually Mondays and Tuesdays) and come together for band practices twice a week. They have a lot of fun and sound amazing. Saxophone, Trombone and Trumpet are the main instruments available to learn free of charge but selected students who play other instruments may also join the Stage/Big Bands (e.g. drums, bass, cornet, clarinet, flute). We also offer talent showcases and school musical productions. Music is strong at NIS. 12 | P a g e
Digital Digital Technologies are transforming our homes and workplaces, changing the way that we interact with each other and live our everyday lives. NIS offers Digital Technology as part of the specialist programme to help prepare our students to participate, create, and thrive in a fast-evolving digital world. As part of the NIS Digital Technology specialist programme, your child will have diverse opportunities, including: • using a 3D CAD design tool to create their own 3D design and have this 3D printed • block coding • directing their own Stop Motion Animation • featuring in their own Chroma Key (green screen) creative images • robotics • designing their own Augmented and Virtual Reality projects and seeing these come to life This exciting Digital Technology programme aims to equip and empower students to become innovative creators of digital technology, not just users. Collaboratively students work to solve problems and unleash their creative side. CNTRL (Computers, Technology, Robotics & Learning) is a group/club that will run for the whole school year for a select group of Year 7 & 8 students of all experiences. Selection is limited to 30-35 students and is based on an application/interview process. The motto of 'CTRL' is "Find your passion & make it happen". We want students who have an interest in technology to continue to develop key skills and competencies within this area that will help to excel them in this field in the future. There is a huge range of learning experiences planned for CTRL with something for everyone. This includes; problem solving, coding, programming, robotics, gaming (Esports), film, video editing, animation, app development, networking & connections and hardware repairs. Students will work through a progression system earning points and recognition for their efforts within CTRL which will allow them to advance their 'apprenticeship'. There are three levels within CTRL; Apprentice, Expert and Master. Each level provides different opportunities and opens up pathways to teaching and mentoring (including staff). Another exciting aspect of CTRL is 'Mission CTRL'. This is a room in the school that is for students within CTRL to tinker, explore, dismantle, design & create to their hearts content. We want students to develop their curiosity and then follow it wherever it may take them - this could be research based or through designing and creating prototypes to help solve real world problems. 13 | P a g e
Sports Philosophy At Northcote Intermediate school we believe that sport is about the journey not the destination. We always aim to win and do our best, but never at the expense of fair play, and respecting ourselves and others. With the students of this age we walk a tightrope between their ever-increasing desire and pressure to win, and the importance of creating and maintaining an experience where students look forward to continuing an active lifestyle at secondary school and beyond. The feeling of winning will be temporary, but the lessons learned in sport can be used for a lifetime. As administrators of sport, we know that it is inevitable that we will have to make difficult decisions around player selection and placement. Our community can be assured that decisions making will be made with these principles at heart.
