1. Introduction
This Strategic Plan document provides a framework for the continued growth of the Margaret River
Hockey Club (MRHC) for a four-year period (2018 – 2022). The Strategic Plan has also been in-
formed by a survey of members [1], (survey conducted August 2019). It has been further refined
by the Board and included a review and alignment with Hockey WA Strategic Initiatives (Draft) [2]
and the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River Community Plan (2018) [3].
Priority Areas of importance identified and to be delivered over the next four years include:
1. Facilities - ‘Bring hockey back to Margaret River’ enabling club training to be held in the
Shire instead of travelling to Busselton.
2. Membership – to increase the number of players in the Shire.
3. Player participation and development – develop opportunities and pathways within our
club for all players to improve their hockey skills.
4. Governance – to provide leadership through strong transparent governance and financial
sustainability.
5. Above the Line – increase club and regional awareness of the Above the Line program.
6. Volunteers - to provide an environment and culture that attracts and supports volunteers.
7. Communication – to raise awareness and improve communication within and around the
Margaret River Hockey Club.
2. Background – Margaret River Hockey
Hockey has been played in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River since the area was first settled
under the Group Settlement Scheme in the 1930’s. Teams from Augusta, Karridale, Witchcliffe,
Rosa Brook, Bramley, Cowaramup and Margaret River regularly competed, travelling to neigh-
bouring Groups to compete and socialise.
The Shire has produced many national and international representative players over the years.
Aran Zalewski, current co-captain of the Australian National Team the Kookaburras started playing
on the grass in Margaret River.
In 2013 the Men’s and Women’s club combined, pooling their resources to encourage the growth
of hockey in the Shire. Since then the club has steadily increased its numbers, currently fielding
five junior teams and three senior teams in the Busselton competition. Since 2017, the club has
facilitated Hookin2Hockey, a program for pre-primary aged school children.Margaret River Hockey Club - August 2019 /20 V7.1 Hockey has always had a strong following in the region. In the 80’s and 90’s the Margaret River Hockey Association, affiliated to Hockey WA, hosted a junior competition with eleven teams on the Gloucester Park Western Oval. During this time the hockey and cricket clubs provided the labour to install sub-surface irrigation under the oval; and labour and funds to develop the Western Oval Pavilion. The popularity of hockey waned in the late 90’s with the introduction of football (soccer) to the re- gion, and the development of an Olympic standard synthetic turf by Busselton Hockey Association. During this time the Margaret River Men’s Hockey Club continued to be strong fielding a South West League team in the Bunbury competition (highest grade available in the South West region) and an A2 team in the Busselton competition. Both these teams trained on the synthetic surface in Busselton. The Margaret River Women’s Hockey Club team competed in the Busselton competi- tion, training indoor on the boards at the Margaret River Recreation Centre. But the junior competi- tion and local teams all but disappeared. In the mid to late 2000’s there was a renewed interest in junior hockey with the Margret River Men’s club supporting a Year 9-10 boys team in the Busselton competition. A few hockey parents supported the formation of the Cowaramup Moo Moo’s a Year 6-8 girls’ team who trained on the oval in Cowaramup and competed in the Busselton competition. Margaret River is a world renowned wine and surfing region, producing Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to rival the best in the world. It is also a stop on the World Surfing League calendar, with the Margaret River Pro held at The Point surf break each year. The region is also known for its natural beauty with Karri forests in the south, the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge and myriad of caves. 3. Vision • To make a lasting difference in the lives of our members and a social impact in our club and local community. As the club moto says, “Proud Past, Bright Future’. • To bring hockey back to the Margaret River region - providing a strong, inclusive and social club. 4. Mission • To provide a leadership group in the form of a committee that will ensure the operations of the MRHC remain efficient and cohesive. • To provide programs to develop our members hockey skills, fitness and knowledge. • To provide programs to develop our coaches. • To bring hockey back to Margaret River by building a training turf in Margaret River. Primarily as a home for Margaret River Hockey Club, but also for use within the community. • To foster the game of hockey at the highest level in a sportsmanlike manner within the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, the South West region and the State of Western Australia.
Margaret River Hockey Club - August 2019 /20 V7.1
• To teach our members to communicate with purpose on all occasions.
• To inspire resilience, leadership and creative, healthy mindsets through the development and
implementation of our Above the Line values program.
This will allow Margaret River Hockey to be seen as active in the Margaret River sporting commu-
nity. It will also provide better access for inclusion of community members to join the MRHC re-
gardless of socio economic and demographic influences.
5. Values
• Inclusiveness - Provide access to MRHC regardless of social demographic, race or disability.
• Respect - Align with the local Shire, Sport and Recreation Committee, Busselton Association,
Hockey WA and other government agencies to achieve common goals.
• Honour - The past and present custodians of the MRHC and their achievements.
• Trust - In the future growth and development of members.
• Leadership - understanding that the leaders of MRHC represent the MRHC as a whole and seek
to lead in a way that inspires fellowship.

bers who donate their time to help with driving the bus to helping at fundraising events.
8. Key Challenges and Opportunities
The Margaret River Hockey Club has been stable across all levels of participants over the past
five years. However, the following have been identified as key challenges and opportunities for
Margaret River Hockey:
1. Travel to training Travelling to Busselton to train is a barrier for many players. The ability
to train in Margaret River would improve player participation.
2. Cost to Play The cost to play hockey can be a ‘perceived’ or a real barrier to participation –
particularly for juniors and families. Ensuring our sport offers value for money, the costs are
transparent and realistic, incentives and flexibility in membership options to participation is
essential to our long-term growth.Margaret River Hockey Club - August 2019 /20 V7.1
3. Maintaining a Volunteer Base Our volunteers are the backbone of our operation. There is
a need to identify the right people, provide adequate training in the right format and recog-
nise their contribution.
4. Financial Stability A planned approach is required to secure financial support from the
government (Federal, State and Local) and the private sector to ensure long term financial
viability.
5. Effective Communication There is a need to consolidate the communication strategies
that the Margaret River Hockey community use internally to their members and externally to
key stakeholders and the broader community. This would include local media, use of social
media platforms, our website and all forms of communication to our members.
6. Long Term Management of the Club A careful, planned and staged approach to the ongo-
ing facility development is required. It is imperative that an asset register and management
plan be developed and implemented.
9. Values & Principles
Margaret River Hockey Club have adopted an award winning mental health initiative to promote
healthy mindsets and culture within the club.
The “Above the Line” Initiative aims at bringing awareness to the way we communicate. By
building a framework for people to visualise. MRHC aims to give its members the power to com-
municate with purpose in all situations.
The values underpinning the “Above the Line” initiative are respect, honour, trust, inclusiveness
and leadership.
“Scarred for Life” - Charity Match
Following the sad loss of two players from the club (due to suicide), a memorial hockey match is
played and funds raised go towards a chosen local charity to support mental health.
It is hoped that this event will grow over time, and support the resources needed in this sector lo-
cally.Margaret River Hockey Club - August 2019 /20 V7.1
