Calling All Residents With A Face  - A local artist is asking for resident

Force retiree who will have a photo show in San Antonio in August. If we get enough
participation, we will certainly make arrangements for a BST bus to take residents to
this event. If you would be interested, please stop by my office or give Dee Smith a

JOB WELL DONE: THE MISSION
By Wendy Carpenter, Chief Health Services Officer
Congratulations to our very own Mission Skilled Nursing
Facility on a job well done as they wrapped up their annual
state survey on Friday, Feb 23. Each year, a team of
surveyors come into our licensed skilled nursing facilities
unannounced and conduct a thorough inspection of the
services provided. The surveyors typically spend four to five days and inspect
medical records, facility safety and environment, conduct interviews with residents
as well as families and staff and leave not a single stone unturned. We are pleased
to announce The Missions survey was a huge success with very minor items noted
to correct. Congratulations to Jennifer Aguirre, Mission Administrator, and the entire
Mission team.
The Mission and The Vista have the highest Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) ranking available, both with five stars! Of the nearly 100 nursing
homes in and around San Antonio, only sixteen percent boast this quality ranking,
and your Mission and Vista are two of the sixteen. Great job all around! Please take
a moment to congratulate our nursing facility staff next time you see them.
BIG GIVE FAST APPROACHING By Joy Woodruff, Director of Development
The Big Give is just weeks away on Thursday, March 22!
As a reminder, Big Give is a 24-hour online giving event. This is our
fifth year to participate in this city and county-wide event and our
success has been notable with a record of $76K in 2015. Here’s a
            link for more information: https://www.thebiggivesa.org/
In previous years, the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation has
2 Deadline: Friday, Mar 16 @ Noon flyer@blueskiestx.org
The Friday Flyer - Blue Skies of Texas
asked our residents to make a gift to the Blue Skies Charitable Fund where need is
greatest. This year we have a bold project that we are very excited about! The goal
is to provide our Health Services Communities with their very own BUS!
Why is this bus needed? Each of our five Blue Skies buses can accommodate at
most two residents in wheelchairs (W/Cs). It is not uncommon for Health Services
residents to be bumped from trips because of limited space. Imagine the frustration
for these residents who can’t enjoy an activity or planned trip because there wasn’t
enough room on the bus.
A bold project requires an audacious goal! Our goal is to raise $65K for a
specially-equipped bus that will be designated for Health Services use. This bus will
allow more frequent outings and community activities for residents living in our
Health Services Communities. Our activities coordinators and other trained staff will
be qualified to drive this bus, which will reduce calls for our very busy transportation
staff.
You don’t do internet stuff? We will offer volunteer assistance in both communities
to help with online gifts for residents who want to participate but are not experienced
with the Internet. More information will be available on the in-house channel and
additional communications.
We are asking every Board member, employee, and resident to support this project
because it will improve quality of life for many of our residents residing in Health
Services Communities. Thank you for considering your participation and helping us
Get the Wheels of The Bus Going ’Round and ’Round!
Your gift on Thursday, March 22, between 11am and 1pm will be especially
helpful as this is a Mid-day Madness time frame with cash awards to the
organization with the most individual donors. If you have several email addresses,
using each one will be helpful this year as the Big Give Rules changed - unique
email addresses are required to qualify for some prizes.
We have residents in each community who are making matching gifts to encourage
their friends and neighbors to help us reach our Big Give Goal. If you would like to
help in a similar manner, please give me a call at (210) 568-3206. Thank you.

ACTION AT THE POOL HALL By Jim Brown
Feb 17: Big crowd today with 14 players showing for competition.
“Simon says:” single elimination for two rounds of play. “Old Vol” was in
rare form as he retired “The Mouth,” “Spooky” and “Jolly Roger” in order.
Round three started the double elimination rounds where “Old Vol” fell to
Spooky” only to reengage for the second elimination game for both. “Old
Vol” again prevailed to enter the rarified air of Shark Bait, a level that has
seen a long dry spell for “Old Vol.” Notable activity included “Jolly Roger”
vs “Thud” wherein “Jolly Roger,” on the fourth shot, hit an ‘excuse me’ shot during
which the 9-ball found a pocket. In another game, “Big Daddy,” on the fifth shot,
struck a marvelous 3-ball combination to sink the 9-ball early and also sink “Killer.”
Feb 2: Twelve players, two hours, one single elimination round and “Talley Ho” from
the West campus walks away the winner. A routine day of 9-ball pool without eye-
watering scenarios to report.
Feb 24: Just a little over two hours for “Jolly Roger” to work his way through 11
players who showed with their pool-sticks drawn. One round of single elimination
was used to winnow the field down to a double elimination level. Two rounds
remained when “Jolly Roger” was dispatched by “Old Vol” to the one-loss bracket;
however, he quickly recovered to meet again at the final two players. Hard work, but
he carried the day to achieve “Shark Bait” status for next round. Interestingly, the
two played a 4-shot game, each getting one “ball-in-hand,” and each pocketing one
ball. Contrast to that game: four shots less than one minute, with an earlier game of
41 shots and 15 minutes by two other sharks!
Feb 28: Thirteen players to start today using single elimination for round one. An
interesting scenario to follow as “Cowboy” demonstrated magic on the table. First
losing to “Mojak,” “Cowboy” dropped into the one-loss bracket to get some practice
with “Snapshot” before returning to reengage “Mojak.” Having to win twice to
achieve the “Shark Bait,” he did! On the first defeat, “Cowboy” scratched on the
break thus giving “Mojak” an easy combination on the 9-ball which went in; a two-
shot game. On the first reengagement, “Cowboy” got the break and got a second
break by having a free and easy combo shot on the 9-ball. Second reengagement,

17 Deadline: Friday, Mar 16 @ Noon flyer@blueskiestx.org
“Mojak” slipped up and scratched on the seventh shot of the game, giving “Cowboy”
his victory after he lined up another 9-ball combination and sunk it! Great job, and
an exciting day. “Cowboy” must now defend as “Shark-bait,” and he’ll have added
skill handicaps to boot.
