                      NEWSLETTER – 18th May 2021
Dear Parents/ Caregivers,

You would have all received notification from the Board that I am now officially the new Principal of St
Michael’s Catholic School.
I wish to thank everyone who prayed for our school during this process and for all those who have
continued to support us during this time of uncertainty.
I feel immensely proud to take on the role of professional leader of our school and am committed to
leading St Michael’s into the future. I feel blessed to have an incredible team of teachers and support
staff, teaching and guiding your tamariki as they learn, grow and develop. We are all very excited to
move forward.

A big part of my role is focused on health and safety and ensuring our school is a safe place for our
children to be. Unfortunately we have a few parents who are putting the safety of our children at risk by
their unintentional actions. Can I please ask all parents, who wish to walk their children into school, that
you park in the Clayton Road car park. The parks within the school are for staff only. The drive through
from May Road is purely a drop off zone. Some parents are parking within the school grounds causing
congestion and risk to our children entering the school. Please do not be offended if you are asked to
move your car.

Communication can also be an issue at schools. Our teachers communicate with whanau through
Seesaw, the School App, emails and on occasion written notices. If you are not receiving notices via
these forms you are probably missing out on vital information. Please speak to your child’s teacher if
you need help setting up Seesaw or the School App, they will be happy to help. On that note, if you
have any issues regarding your child or our school, please feel free to speak with your child’s teacher
or me. My office door is always open and I can not make improvements if I am unaware of issues.

Our Baptism class has begun at St Michael’s Church at the 8am Sunday
Mass. It was so lovely to celebrate Mass with children from our school and
I know the members of our Parish love to see the children participating.
On Sunday 20 June the children will be receiving the Sacrament of
Baptism at a School Mass. Please mark your calendars, everyone from our
school community is invited to attend. You will remember that when you
made the decision to send your child to a Catholic School, you agreed to
support our school's special character and this is one opportunity to do so.
We look forward to seeing you all there.

Have a great week everyone,

Ma te atua koutou e manaaki,
May God bless and protect you all,

Rachael McLanachan
Principal

Wednesday 19 May,

HIKOI
Dear parents/caregivers,

This year we planned to begin our year by learning about Saint Mary of the Cross, a significant person for
Catholics in Rotorua. Due to Covid restrictions this hikoi had to be postponed until the 10 June.

The trip will be on Thursday 10 June, from 9am - 2pm. Children will be travelling by bus. The timetable
for the day will be as follows:

9.00am Leave school arriving at St Michael’s Church in time for Mass at 9:30am
10:30am Children will have morning tea at the Lakefront
11 - 2pm Children will be in groups participating in activities.
2:00pm Leave St Michael’s Church for school

Our programme will start at St Michael’s Church on Lake Road where we will meet with Emma Liley, our
tour guide.

Correct winter school uniform is to be worn.
Children will need to bring their lunch and drink bottles with them, there will be a break in the
programme to stop for lunch. If the weather forecast predicts a drizzle students should bring a
raincoat. If there is heavy rain it will be postponed for another day.

If you would like to volunteer to help us on the day you will be given a small group of children to supervise.
The teachers will be on-hand to assist you with this task.

If you are able to help, please indicate on the permission slip below.
We look forward to spending an awesome day of discovery with you and your children.

Rachael McLanachan and the St Michael’s Team

I give permission for my child _____________________________________ to travel by bus to St Michael’s
Catholic Church on Thursday 10 June.
I understand that my child will be expected to walk to the Government Garden’s via town and that they will
be properly supervised at all times.
