PARENT & LEADER GUIDE Welcome to BOLT Backyard Adventure! With minimal preparation, easy to follow instructions, and videos that will lead you and your kids step-by-step through each of the 3 days, BOLT is designed to bring all of the fun and faith-building of Vacation Bible School to the cozy confines of your home or backyard. It’s so simple! Directions: Invite friends and neighbors: If guidelines permit and if you feel comfortable gathering with other people, invite friends, family, and neighbors to participate with you. It’s a terrific way to share the good news of Jesus with your community. Press play: When you’re ready, gather the kids around and press play on the video. Each video will lead you and the kids through the entire experience. Occasionally, the video will ask you to pause and do something. When you’re finished doing it, press play again. Play the games: When the video prompts you, press pause and lead the kids in playing the games. Each day has games, plus an alternative activity. One of the games each day is demonstrated in the video, the other two are not. You can read more about all of the games here. There’s no rush to get through the games, so take your time and have fun. SOME supplies are provided. Others are simple household items that you would need to collect. Play all or as many games as you want. Origami time: It’s so simple, yet fun! The video will show everyone exactly what to do. Just have the square pieces of paper ready to go. This may be more difficult for the younger kids. If so, you can help them with the folds. Craft time: Each day we’ll have a simple craft for all ages. We’ve provided most of your supplies. Younger children may need an extra hand. Snack time: We’ve provided the snacks! Have the kids sit and eat and ask them some questions about today’s story. We’ve included some fun questions for you. Page 3
Bible Story Time: We have included illustrated pages kids can color during the Bible story time. We have also provided a sports-related scratch off activity. Worship: We’ll have fun and active video worship that kids will want to move to. We want to encourage you to worship with them. Especially because they’ll be worshiping at home, kids will have the same enthusiasm that you show. On our YouTube channel we have a VBS playlist from 2020 and you can access those videos anytime you want during or after this week. MUSIC: BOLT VBS features music by Ben Calhoun of the chart-topping Christian band--Citizen Way. If you would like to listen to the 3 featured songs (plus many more) with your family, you can stream them through this playlist on Spotify. We will be singing these songs together at the Saturday evening 5PM event, so put them on REPLAY until then! Share Your Adventure With Us: This year we can’t all be in the same place, but we can all share our adventure! We encourage you to share pictures and video by emailing: tsonger@mightymessengers.org We will post some of them on our Facebook page - @StMichaelLutheranChurchPortageMI. Video Access: You can access the videos and resources through our website page – VBS Family Portal. You can also access the videos on our YouTube channel – St. Michael Lutheran Church in Portage MI. GAME DAY PREP: This is where Parent/Leaders would want to gather up those extra supplies from around your house. Everyone is always anxious to get started and we thought you could consider this starter project as your playbook of prayers! Starting with conversations with the Lord always helps things to go more smoothly. These journals are a cinch to create, and kiddos can keep their special prayers and thoughts inside once completed. Each one can be decorated with sporty shapes. Simply stick 'em on wherever you like to make the journal extra unique! Page 5

Have your kid draw a picture of the most fun thing they did during the VBS Adventure: St. Michael LAMP TEAM to Lac Brochet, Manitoba, Canada St. Michael began sending a team to Lac Brochet, Manitoba in 2010. Lac Brochet is a fly-in community only accessible by air (apart from the ice roads in the winter) and the people there are the Dene people. The community is very receptive to our coming and provides housing for the team. The teams start by going up for a week in the summer and running a Vacation Bible School for the children. Over the years relationships are built between the team members and the community members and the Gospel is shared in Bible Studies and just in casual conversation. Praying we can return in 2022!
