Partnership Municipality of Mersrags and Mersrags Secondary school Project Coordinator Engure Lake Nature Park
• GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Engage people in physical activities in natural protected areas as places to be rediscovered and elements to stimulate the involvement of surrounded communities respecting the environment. Furthermore the project wants to promote social inclusion and equal opportunities, increased participation in, and equal access to, sport for all. • SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: 1. Developing sports management in natural protected areas with an international network able to establish a long lasting system of non- organized outdoor sports activities: the project involves research, labor market, International and local communities, in a networking between public institutions and the sports centers 2. Promoting the economic dimension of sports: the active participation of All, especially young people, women and people living in social disadvantage and economic conditions will be a key feature of the project in order to understand how physical activity linked to health can become important to their own individual path, not only health but also professional one.
Framework and challenges In the European Union we can find different types of natural protected areas: local, regional, interregional, national up to the European ones. Levels of protection and eligible activities in such protected areas are well defined by the European Union, clear and shared by member States. A gap emerges between the European Nevertheless, at local level sports activities in these areas seem to be not operationally written rules regulated, especially in the field of local and competitions. This demonstrates a need for practice/habit capacity building for managers of in the protected areas. operational management of these areas. In addition, the impact of such activities is often underestimated, particularly respect to the wildlife and the most important and delicate plant species.
All countries involved in SPRINTERS have wonderful protected natural areas that are likely to remain outside the circuits of interest for citizens and institutions. They are unaware of owning a civic and natural heritage with countless potential in sport and for their own health. Protected areas should be perceived as an opportunity, and not as a limitation.
