Deryn Thorpe Deryn Thorpe is a fanatical gardener, passionate about communicating her love of gardening to others. She is an award winning garden journalist, writing regularly for Gardening Australia magazine and other gardening publications. She co-presents the multi-award winning ‘All The Dirt’ www.allthedirt.com.au , Australia’s most popular gardening podcast. Deryn has edited garden books and worked as a garden TV presenter and is a regular presenter on ABC garden radio and a vivacious and popular speaker at festivals and garden clubs. She volunteered for six years with Open Gardens Australia and opened her own beautiful, cottage style garden to the public. She is an Honourary Life Member of the Horticultural Media Association Australia (HMAA) and the Nursery and Garden Industry WA. Deryn loves showing people the world, worked as a European tour guide in the 1980ies and has led garden tours in Australia and overseas since the 1990s. Spring Garden Exploration of Tasmania Day 1 Tuesday 11 October, 2022 Devonport Tour members will meet at Launceston airport. Please book a flight to arrive in Launceston no later than 2.30 pm. We will travel to visit Old Wesleydale, a peaceful English garden abounding with hedges and walls, productive potager and lovely vistas. Features include a walled garden, picking garden and glass house, the terrace garden and a new aviary building, ha-ha wall, Lake Walk and sculptured elephant hedge. In the evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner to meet Deryn Thorpe. Day 2 Wednesday 12 October, 2022 Devonport This morning we visit Table Cape Farm, which specializes in growing tulips. They should be spectacular in full flower at the time of our visit. In the afternoon we visit Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens. It’s unique design makes it one of Australia’s major rhododendron gardens. Day 3 Thursday 13 October, 2022 Launceston We will first visit the Tasmanian Arboretum. It consists of thirty-three hectares of peaceful treed landscape covered with gorgeous spring leaves. Day 4 Tuesday 22 November, 2022 Christchurch We travel north first to visit Amberley House, established in 1876. An extensive pond network is surrounded by 2,500 specimen trees many over 100 years old. We continue our journey to Garden Tour to Flaxmere gardens, where we will see seven acres of boldly designed garden with alpine views all the South Island of around. Day 2 Sunday 20 November, 2022 Christchurch This morning we visit Ohinetahi a gorgeous formal garden with a wonderful layout and interesting planting. A series of small, but perfectly proportioned garden rooms give a strong sense of structure and protect the garden from the sea breezes. Deryn will make sure that we get the most out of the garden. In the afternoon we visit Broadfield Estate set on three and a half hectares featuring many natives also New Zealand raised varieties of Azalea, Rhododendron and Camelias. Day 3 Monday 21 November, 2022 Christchurch Today we travel to the pretty village of Akaroa, originally founded by the French. It’s a delightful town still retaining the French ambience. We visit Coombe Farm, a working eight hundred and fifty sheep farm in the Takamatua valley. The garden is in a beautiful setting surrounded by hills
Day 9 Wednesday 19 October, 2022 Hobart In the morning we visit Crawleighwood Garden. This wonderful two hectare garden is nestled in the picturesque hills at Nicholls Rivulet near Cygnet in the beautiful Huon Valley. The garden features lush rhododendron woodland and rainforest with myrtles, rare and unusual plants, a wide variety of deciduous trees including maples, which will display their spring leaves, meandering paths, stone walls and a Gondwanan arboretum. In the afternoon, we visit Inverawe Native Gardens, Tasmania’s largest landscaped native garden. We will learn about the challenges faced by early botanists in dealing with native plants. Day 10 Thursday 20 October, 2022 Hobart This morning we visit Susan McKinnon’s stunning garden. A landscape gardener who loves herbaceous perennials and grasses, we will enjoy her unique style. In the afternoon we travel through the Huon Valley to visit Eggs and Bacon Bay Cottage. The charming cottage sits on 0.2 hectares on the edge of the Huon River, a peaceful spot just up from Eggs and Bacon Bay. Looking out across a magnificent sea of colour, it is impossible to believe that there was no garden here at all when Anne Le Ferve moved in just before the Christmas of 2000. In the evening we will enjoy historic gardens of Brickendon. First settled in 1825 by William Archer, it has been owned and a farewell dinner to say goodbye to Deryn and group members. farmed by the same family for over one hundred and eighty years. Day 6 Sunday 16 October, 2022 Launceston This morning we visit Panshanger, an elegant house and garden in the Greek revival style. The long entrance avenue and surrounding parkland are heavily wooded. A finely worked nineteenth-century iron gate opens to a flower garden full of roses. There is a unique pigeon tower positioned to be seen from the house terrace. In the afternoon we travel just out of Launceston to visit Entally House, the first National Trust house in Australia. Built in 1820 by Thomas Reibey, the house has an elegant garden set in forty-five hectares. Day 7 Monday 17 October, 2022 Hobart We travel to Hobart today, visiting Janet Good’s garden. This gorgeous higher altitude garden has an English garden feel. Day 8 Tuesday 18 October, 2022 Hobart We will have a guided tour of picturesque Hobart before visiting the ‘Patch’ at the Hobart Botanical Garden, an inspiring example of an urban community garden that was first started in 1995. We will see gorgeous new spring leaves on the mature trees in the Botanical Garden and beautiful spring flowers. The afternoon will be free for a visit to MONA or the Tasmanian Art Gallery. showing different yoga positions scattered around. In the afternoon we visit Birchwood Garden set against magnificent mountains. The garden was designed by Paul Bangay and features a green, white and mauve colour pallet. Bangay developed a series of rooms each with their own character. Day 10 Monday 28 November, 2022 Dunedin Today we travel to the city of Dunedin. Originally founded by Scottish settlers and known as the Edinburgh of the South, it features beautifully preserved buildings overlooking parklands. The remainder of the afternoon will be free for individual exploration. Day 11 Tuesday 29 November, 2022 Dunedin Day 6 Thursday 24 November, 2022 Queenstown We’ll visit the Glenfalloch Woodland Garden, situated in a fertile coastal valley above the harbour. Today we travel to Queenstown, the magnificent holiday capital of New Zealand. Sitting on Lake Originally developed by Philip Brady in 1917, it has a collection of superb European trees from Wakatipu and surrounded by towering mountains, its scenery is among the most spectacular in 1872, under planted with azaleas and rhododendrons. Fuchsias and native ferns grow luxuriantly the world. We will stop to visit Da’Vella Gore’s two acres of English garden scented by lavender, beside Russell Creek. Returning to Dunedin, we visit the historic, Jacobean style Olveston House, roses and honey suckle before we arrive in Queenstown. containing a treasure trove of art and antiques, set in nearly half a hectare of garden. In the Day 7 Friday 25 November, 2022 Queenstown evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner to say goodbye to Deryn and group members. Today we visit Chantecler, a 40 acre property with 12 acres of themed garden styles and plants Day 12 Wednesday, 30 November, 2022 Departure from around the world. We drive to Arrowtown, a spectacular gold town dating from the 1860s. This morning we transfer to the airport for flights back to Australia. We will have time to explore its historic main street, before travelling to the Gibbston Wine Region for a tasting of its world famous pinot noir wine. Day 8 Saturday 26 November, 2022 Queenstown We will enjoy some of the best tourist activities today. We will take a gondola to Bob’s Peak for a magnificent view before sailing on a restored steamship around the Lake. The afternoon will be free for individual exploration. Tour members wishing to dine with the group please meet the tour manager in the lobby this evening. Day 9 Sunday 27 November, 2022 Queenstown This morning we visit A Wild Dream. This garden features three thousand roses and a thousand lilies. The scent of these flowers will follow us around the garden as we examine sculptures
