COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Terrain: To do well, runners will need to prepare for the thin air as heights reach over 9,000 feet of elevation. Lake Tahoe is one of Northern California’s premier destinations and draws a healthy crowd year-round for its spectacular skiing, water sports, and outdoor activities. With 72 miles of shoreline straddling the California-Nevada state line, there’s always somewhere new to explore and plenty of terrain for Spartans to roam. The race will be run on a mixture of established trail and forest road with plenty of elevation gain and loss. There will not be any bush whacking, but the terrain will be sure to challenge racers in plenty of other ways. Special Gear: Racers should plan to bring appropriate fuel for their needs. Fuel will be provided on course in addition to water. Hydration packs (or water containers of some variety) are strongly suggest- ed for all racers. Please note that shoes with spikes are not allowed. Aid Stations: At each stop you will be able to drink as much water as you want, however we ask that you only take one (1) cup. • ULTRA: There will be nine (9) aid stations on course with one additional aid station on the first lap Ultra only spur. There will be two hydration pack refilling stations per lap plus what you bring to the gear drop. • BEAST: There will be nine (9) aid stations on course with two hydration pack refilling stations and you will be able to fill up your pack at the Start Line. On-Course Hydration Tips: • Make sure to fill your pack up prior to the race. You can purchase hydration packs at the Spartan store on race day. • Make sure you carry enough water to be able to keep you hydrated between stations. • Make sure to stop at every aid station to get water, use your pack in between. • We highly suggest carrying some type of electrolyte drink in addition to water. • Make sure to properly hydrate in the week leading up to the event. KID OF THE HILL We've encountered some unique challenges with our venue and kids course design this year. As a result, we're extremely excited to present you with an ALL NEW challenge and an answer to the question, "Who will be Kid of the Hill?" We will not be hosting a traditional Kids Race event in Tahoe. Instead, on Sunday September 29th (ONLY), we'll be offering our Kid of the Hill event, where young Spartans can test themselves on a multi-distance vertical climb trail run, focused on the vertical ascent, with no obstacles to slow them down. Three distances - 1K, 1.5K and 2K - will be offered, with no age restrictions. On Sunday morning there will be one Competitive heat for 10-13 yrs that will act as a Kids World Championship qualifier. For more details on our Kid of the Hill event, please visit the North Lake Tahoe World Championship Event Page. In addition to the Kid of the Hill Vertical Challenge event, we will be offering a short kid-sized course and an enhanced kids festival area, like nothing you've seen at a Spartan event yet!
