SOUTH HUNSLEY NEWS | WINTER EDITION CONTENTS PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME “This winter edition of the South Hunsley News recognises just some of the fantastic achievements our students have accomplished this term, be that in the classroom, on YEAR 7 SPELLING stage or on the football field. You can read about our Key Stage 4 Celebration Evening which takes place every BEE year to honour students who have demonstrated outstanding effort and achievement, excellent progress, a positive attitude to learning or exceptional teamwork skills during the GCSE years. SOUTH HUNSLEY NEWS | WINTER EDITION EVENTS FROM THE CLASSROOM HOUSE SYSTEM: CONSTELLATIONS WINS FINAL VOTE! Students, parents and staff have voted on how the new house system will look Voting for the theme of INDUS HERCULES our new house system opened at the beginning of this term and we can now reveal that the winning theme, as voted for by students, parents and staff, is Constellations. Constellations won with an overwhelming 58% of the vote, beating inspirational Yorkshire figures and trees. This means that the names of our six houses will be: Indus, Hercules, Pegasus, Vela, Draco and Orion. Last summer, we devised a brief questionnaire so students and parents could PEGASUS VELA put forward their ideas for the theme of our new house system. Each house needs to have its own distinctive character and we asked you to think about possible house names and house identities to best capture what it means to be a member of the South Hunsley School community. We would like to thank everyone who put suggestions forward and contributed to this winning theme. We are delighted with the outcome and look forward to introducing the new theme when the house system is launched in the summer term of 2014. DRACO ORION How will the system work? The new pastoral structure will be based around six houses, with each house made up of two form groups from each year group. This will be phased over four years with an additional form group added to each new Year 7 from September 2015. This will not affect your child’s form and single year form groups will be retained rather than moving to mixed age form groups. 03

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHERS VISIT NORTH WALES Students experience real life Geography Once again the Year 12 Geography trip to Snowdon has proved to be a popular and successful visit, with 63 AS students travelling to the National Park to take their learning outside the classroom. Students gathered data on a number of different geographical features to help with the work they have completed so far on the course. As well as investigating fluvial and glacial features, students visited Llandudno to assess how tourism has affected the town and its development as a resort. There was also a visit to the Afon Nant Peris, a small mountain stream running down the north eastern flank of Mount Snowdon where students collected data so they could compare it to the Bradshaw Model; assessing the downstream changes of the river. SOUTH HUNSLEY NEWS | WINTER EDITION PRIMARY TRANSITION THE PRIMARY TRANSITION PROCESS Students enjoy a taste of South Hunsley life We have a very busy year ahead of us working with our feeder primary schools and have a lot of exciting activities planned to help students with their transition to secondary school. YEAR 7 This term, primary students have been visiting our school for a number of engaging and interesting classroom activities to prepare them for life at South Hunsley School. STUDENT Students from North Ferriby and Brough primary schools have been working on a World War II project and they visited South Hunsley to work with Mrs Beharrell to SNAPS WINNING prepare and cook foods typical of that period of time. FORMER STUDENT TO APPEAR IN WEST END Sam Varley will make his stage debut next year We are thrilled to learn that a former student has won a part in the West End production of Matilda. Sam Varley left us in July at the end of Year 7 after being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. The prestigious school has produced some of Britain’s best known actors and singers – Denise Van Outen, Tamzin Outhwaite and Tom Fletcher from McFly are just a few of its notable alumni. 10 Sam starts rehearsals in January and the show begins in March. As well as enjoying success on a British level, Molly also has experience of international Judo and has travelled to the Czech Republic to compete in the European Cup. SOUTH HUNSLEY NEWS | WINTER EDITION SPORT UPDATE GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM IN DRAMATIC PENALTY SHOOT OUT Made it to the last 16 of the National Cup Our Under 18 Girls football team have had another successful run in the National Cup. Unfortunately the girls were knocked out by Balby Carr Community Sports College for the second year in a row, this time at the quarter final stage. Despite not quite matching last year’s success, which saw them make it to the semi-finals, the standout match of their cup run came in the fourth round against Trinity School in Carlisle – a match described by the referee as ‘the best game of women’s football I’ve ever refereed’.
