CAPE POINT finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 VINEYARDS Prices are quoted by the case in bond Cape Point but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Cape Point Vineyards produces arguably the most complex and fascinating Sauvignon Blanc in the Western Cape and its wines are consistently awarded four or five stars by Platter. The winery and vineyards are located on the narrow Cape Peninsula (spanning 11 kilometres at its widest point), between the icy currents of the Atlantic seaboard and the warm waves of False Bay, resulting in a unique maritime climate ideal for superior winemaking. The extremely talented Duncan Savage left in May of this year to focus on his own label, Savage Wines (see below). These wines are from his penultimate vintage at Cape Point where – over 14 vintages – he has explored just how complex wines from Sauvignon can be, eschewing the idea of simply making a facsimile of the New Zealand style through tank fermentation. He seeks to make a more textured Sauvignon, creating layers of flavour and attempting to produce aromas of grapefruit, citrus and stone fruits rather than the ubiquitous gooseberry and elderflower notes. To do this he barrel-ferments up to 80 percent of the crop in old, 600-litre barrels, and adds a dash of Sémillon into the mix. The results are exceptional, and no less an authority than Eben Sadie – arguably South Africa’s finest winemaker – has been quoted as saying that Cape Point is the country’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. WHITE WINE 2015 CAPE POINT VINEYARDS RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC Y5692B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £132.00 Fresh and vibrant, this has classic Sauvignon notes of gooseberry, fresh herbs and citrus. The palate displays a fine balance between crisp acidity and subtle grip. Long, scented finish. Drink 2017-2018. Ben Grosvenor, Private Account Manager Platter’s Wine Guide: Older-oak-matured 2015 remains industry benchmark, profoundly expressing variety & terroir (same 3 south-facing vineyards). Floral aromas lead to lime & stonefruit with 10% semillon adding to rich texture, all underscored by steely minerality. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 2015 CAPE POINT VINEYARDS ISLIEDH Y5691B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £96.00 This has typically succinct aromas of nettle, yellow flowers and fennel. It is one of the most distinctive South African Sauvignons. The palate is very well balanced with citrus, lemon and gooseberry on the attack. There is fine weight in the mid-palate and superb harmony on the finish. Drink 2017-2019. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: Elegant 2015 white Bordeaux blend, 82% barrel-fermented sauvignon, semillon vinified in clay amphoras, 16 months on lees, resulting in rich texture offset by taut acidity, mineral edge, savoury oak spice as well as citrus & stonefruit. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 2
SAVAGE WINES finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Western Cape Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. After 11 years producing Platter five-star wines at Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan Savage finally realised his dream of producing his own red and white wine before the age of 35 with his maiden (2011 red and 2012 white) vintages. The wines received high critical acclaim (4.5 stars each from Platter) with Duncan once again in the spotlight as one of the most exciting young talents in South African winemaking. As of May 2016, Duncan has left Cape Point to focus on the Savage range Duncan’s aim is to produce elegant wines which reflect their terroir. He does this by using fruit from old vines with whole-bunch fermentation, minimal intervention and use of old wood, and also amphorae for the Savage Red. Duncan says that the key is to “do as little as possible, as much as you can”. These are among the most exciting wines on the South African scene, all capable of long ageing. WHITE WINE 2015 SAVAGE WHITE, WESTERN CAPE Y5683B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £96.00 Duncan Savage rightly has a reputation as a very fine white winemaker. He manages to toe the line between texture and fragrance, maintaining concentration and restraint in his signature white blend. Drink 2017-2020. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: Re-invented 2015, now a sauvignon, semillon, clairette & chenin blend sourced from far-flung vineyards & fermented naturally in old barrels, brings richness & texture to the fore. Elegantly poised & almost mystically complex, a classic in the making. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 3
SAVAGE WINES finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Western Cape (continued) Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. RED WINE 2015 FOLLOW THE LINE, WESTERN CAPE Y5684B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £108.00 The nose is delicately scented with layers of juicy red fruit. There is enough tannin on the palate to provide focus, but juicy fruit and freshness are the key characteristics of this wine. Drink 2018-2020. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: Subtle, understated cinsault-led blend with grenache & shiraz/syrah (Piekenierskloof & Darling), 2015 is sublimely fragrant, with satin-smooth tannins & lingering floral perfume. Multi-layered red berry fruit persists to elegantly long finish. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 2014 SAVAGE RED, WESTERN CAPE Y5685B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £108.00 The density and richness at the core of this wine is a step up from “Follow the Line”. Aromas of dark cherry lead to a palate that balances savoury notes with ripe fruit. Long on the finish. Drink 2018-2021. Stuart Rae, Commercial Manager (Private Accounts) Platter’s Wine Guide: Shiraz-led blend, with grenache, touriga & cinsault, 2014 follows brilliant form, with floral perfume, spice & subtle red berries in delicious union. Unique expression of ‘feminine’ beauty & earthy authenticity, without the iron fist. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 4
KEERMONT finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Stellenbosch Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Keermont intends to create wines that reflect the beautiful place from which they come and the particular year’s vintage conditions. The wines are made as naturally as possible, with very little irrigation in the vineyards and minimal intervention in the winery. The estate has been owned by the Wraith family since 2003; 2005 saw the start of a major vineyard- planting programme on lands that had been fallow for a number of years. Seventeen hectares were planted over four years to add to an existing eight hectares of older vineyards. Keermont’s official maiden vintage came in 2007. The farm is situated high up in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, otherwise known as Paradyskloof (Paradise Valley). Due to the steepness of the terrain, the altitude climbs 200 metres within the 1.7 kilometre length of the farm and the vineyards are planted between 250 and 400 metres above sea-level. Thus the vines planted over these different terrains ultimately produce wines with good complexity and a variety of flavours. In addition, the proximity to False Bay and the Indian Ocean also moderates the climate in the vineyard. Winemaker Alex Starey is in charge of the vineyards and making the estate’s wines. Employed at the start of the redevelopment of the farm in 2005, he has travelled and worked in wine regions including Maipo Valley in Chile; Penedès and Priorat in Spain; and St Emilion and Côte-Rôtie in France. Alex has set the bar high and Keermont is successfully maintaining the high standards of winemaking that caused the Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin to say in October 2013, “If you want to see the new South Africa and catch a glimpse of what the future beholds, then look no further than Keermont.” In fact, we would go so far as to say that each vintage just gets better at this estate. WHITE WINE 2015 KEERMONT TERRASSE Y5693B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £144.00 This has great purity of fruit – apple, pear and sweet citrus. There is a hint of honeysuckle and orange on the mid-palate which is then lifted by racy acidity – lightening the many textures and enhancing the freshness of the wine. Drink 2017-2018. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: 2015 successfully blends Chenin with Viognier (some peachy perfume), Sauvignon (freshness), and Chardonnay (lemon notes). Elegantly rich, flavoursome; just short of special 2014. 4/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 RED WINE 2014 KEERMONT SYRAH Y5694B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £204.00 Keermont is nestled between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountains and this gives their wines a unique character that balances elegance, cool freshness and ripeness. Spicy aromas are complemented by red and black fruit. The palate is full and broad, with a tight structure. Drink 2019-2022. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer 5
RESTLESS RIVER finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. One of the new estates we are offering this year is “Restless River”, a progressive, young and exciting estate based in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, a cool climate area that is producing truly world-class wines. The estate is run by the Wessels family who owns some of the oldest Cabernet and Chardonnay vines in the valley. The ethos here is for avant-garde, hand-crafted wines that truly speak of their surroundings. Since the first vines were planted in 1999, the endeavour has been to make the best quality and they have not disappointed. Production is exceptionally low here due to the “hands on“ approach and attention to detail that allows the use of only the finest fruit. Restless River is a cutting-edge boutique winery whose wines speak of the place and the vintage. WHITE WINE 2014 RESTLESS RIVER AVA MARIE CHARDONNAY, HEMEL-EN-AARDE VALLEY Y5695B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £132.00 This wine is both robust in its fruit generosity and elegant in the natural freshness that it embodies. There are layers of toasty richness, overlaid with citrus fruit, yellow flowers and yellow peach. The palate is glossy and sophisticated. Drink 2017-2019. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: 2014 advances even on the fine 2013. Understated oak, expressive fruit & a combo of delicious, supple generosity (even in youth) & tight, mineral restraint. Subtle, succulent intensity, long finish. 5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 6
THE FOUNDRY finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Stellenbosch Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Established in 2000, the raison d’être of The Foundry estate has been to produce the best examples of Rhône grape varieties. Started by Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams, The Foundry produces possibly the best-value, terroir-driven, Rhône variety whites in all of South Africa. For this year’s offer we have selected the estate’s three white varietals, having been particularly impressed by their purity and true representation of each grape variety. Chris Williams allows the wines to speak out with minimal handling in the vineyard and the winery. This estate is one of the standard-bearers for Rhône grape varieties in South Africa today, a young and forward-looking estate that concentrates on sourcing the best grapes from only the very best terroir to produce wines that are an absolute joy to drink. WHITE WINE 2015 THE FOUNDRY VIOGNIER Y5696B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £84.00 The nose is not overtly exotic, but more nods towards it, with apricot, lime blossom and bright citrus notes that are interwoven with a flinty minerality. These flavours follow through onto the palate, which possesses a succulent juiciness and finishes with a cool steeliness. Drink 2017-2018. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter‘s Wine Guide: Wonderfully delicate floral notes with restrained lemon, coriander, lemongrass & aniseed, perfectly synced with a creamy texture, silky acidity & subtle touch of old oak. 2015 an expressive & complex delight. Great example of Cape viognier, as was standout 2014. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 2015 THE FOUNDRY GRENACHE BLANC Y5697B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £84.00 The fruit from this wine is sourced from the Paardeberg and is grown on decomposed granite and shale. The nose is restrained with delicate floral aromas and stone fruit. The palate possesses a density that hints at richness but the focus exhibited on the nose remains. Drink 2017-2019. Ben Grosvenor, Private Account Manager Platter‘s Wine Guide: A local benchmark for the variety, from Voor Paardeberg. 2014 refined white peach & ginger aromas; precise & tangy with hallmark mineral undertones; shade less intensity than 2013, which had 5% Roussanne. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 7
THE FOUNDRY finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Stellenbosch (continued) Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. 2015 THE FOUNDRY ROUSSANNE Y5698B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £84.00 This wine is incredibly distinctive. Aromas of wild flowers, oatmeal and lemon zest dominate the nose, while the palate is vivid, with direct acidity, orchard fruit and a hint of spice joining the aromatics. Texturally fine, mouth-coating fruit draws out the finish. Drink 2017-2019. Stuart Rae, Commercial Manager (Private Accounts) Platter‘s Wine Guide: From vineyard in south Stellenbosch, 2015 peach pip, green melon & oystershell minerality buoyed by bright acidity. Melange of perfumed lemon blossom, baked lemon flavours on this impressively textured stunner. No 2014. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 8
ALHEIT VINEYARDS finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Western Cape Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. It is rare for a new producer to achieve cult status almost immediately but Chris and Suzaan Alheit’s first (2011) vintage of Cartology brought them unexpected fame; this is now one of the most tightly allocated South African names on the market. The aim of the winery is to “vinify extraordinary Cape vineyards... to find the voice of the land itself”. Using the knowledge and contacts of leading viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, the couple sought out some of the oldest vineyard blocks in the country. Chenin Blanc forms the mainstay of the blend, accompanied by a much smaller component of very old-vine Sémillon from Franschhoek. The winery itself is a rented shed, originally conceived as an olive oil production facility, on the Hemel-en-Aarde road out of Hermanus, a far cry from their vineyard sources on the western coast. Production has increased slightly but is still small. WHITE WINE 2015 ALHEIT HEMELRAND VINE GARDEN, WESTERN CAPE Z9766B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £90.00 The concept of “one place, one wine” prevails with this bottling from Alheit. It is in effect a field blend. Stone fruit and white flowers are evident throughout. There are also hints of spice, pear and toasted nuts. The palate is innately powerful, with flavours reflecting the nose of the wine. High natural acidity provides balance and direction. Drink 2018-2020. Ben Grosvenor, Private Account Manager Platter’s Wine Guide: From young mixed vineyard next to Alheits’ Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge cellar - roussanne, chenin, chardonnay & verdelho. Roussanne-led 2015 evokes sunny floral charm; graceful, gentle texture, very long. Unobtrusive 14.5% alcohol. Native ferment, 60% older oak, rest cement ‘egg’. 5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 2015 ALHEIT CARTOLOGY, WESTERN CAPE Y5686B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £114.00 As the name suggest, this wine is a blended tour of the Cape. Ripe quince, apricot kernel and lime inform the aromas. Herbal notes from the Sémillon add complexity, with plenty of matter across the palate. Drink 2018-2021. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: More than ever, 2015 reflects chenin & semillon partnership, latter up to 14%. There’s an earthy, sunnily ripe aromatic quality mirrored in the rich & dense texture. Clean, lemony intensity provides lengthy conclusion. Lovely wine from grand vintage; long potential. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 9
THORNE & finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 DAUGHTERS Prices are quoted by the case in bond Western Cape but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. John “Thorne” Seccombe met his wife at university in Stellenbosch. Neither was studying to be a winemaker. They moved to the UK and it was there that John took his first winemaking steps, enrolling to study oenology at Plumpton College. He gained experience by working stages in Barossa, the Languedoc and California, as well as consulting for Ridgeview in the South Downs. In 2008, the couple moved back to the Cape to raise their two daughters, and in 2012 Thorne & Daughters was established. The grapes are all sourced on contract, using top viticultural expert, Rosa Kruger, as a conduit to find some of the oldest and most interesting vines in the Cape. Unusually, John chose Roussanne as the leading lady in the blend of his principal wine, Rocking Horse; in 2014 it is 50 percent Roussanne (almost half of which is 31 years old), ably supported by 32 percent Chenin Blanc and 13 percent Chardonnay. The grapes were sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch, Swartland and Franschhoek. The first vintage of the South African allocation of this wine sold out within two weeks of being launched. WHITE WINE 2015 THORNE & DAUGHTERS ROCKING HORSE, WESTERN CAPE Y5688B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £168.00 Rocking Horse takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that John “Thorne” Seccombe made for his daughters out of old oak barrel staves. The wine is made of fruit that is carefully selected from vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The nose is reminiscent of peach, lavender and nectarine. On the palate, the wine is expansive and rich, with crisp acidity and pithy grip bringing focus and texture. Drink 2018-2021. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: The whole greater than sum of its parts in 2015 roussanne-led 5-way, multi-regional union. Precision & freshness highlight multi-layered aromas: white hedgerow flowers, citrus & almonds; & texture: graceful silkiness with firm conclusion. Intriguing future, like 2014. 5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 10
FABLE MOUNTAIN finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 VINEYARDS Prices are quoted by the case in bond Tulbagh but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Tulbagh, if you are not familiar with it, lies to the north of Wellington, flanking the eastern edge of Swartland. It is not a region particularly well-known for quality wine but it is slowly beginning to follow in the footsteps of its innovative neighbour, Swartland. Fable Mountain’s vineyards were established here in 2000 (under its previous incarnation of Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards) and gained significant respect in South Africa throughout the subsequent 10 years for the quality of its grapes and dedication to organic and biodynamic viticulture (Chris and Andrea Mullineux both worked here in the early part of the decade). Red grapes (Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache) are grown here on steep mountain slopes at 400 to 500 metres above sea-level. White grapes (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Chardonnay) meanwhile are carefully selected from old vines in neighbouring Swartland to make the Jackal Bird blend. The property changed hands in 2010 and is now in the hands of ex-Screaming Eagle investor Charles Banks. With a flurry of Platter five-star wines in the last couple of vintages, Fable Mountain Vineyards is finally beginning to realise its incredible potential. WHITE WINE 2014 FABLE MOUNTAIN JACKAL BIRD WHITE, WESTERN CAPE Y5699B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £120.00 The fruit for this is sourced from around the Cape. On the nose there are inviting aromas of white flower blossom and honey, with citrus freshness. On the palate, crisp minerality and stone fruit layer with zesty acidity. Drink 2018-2019. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: 2014 shows delicate vitality & purity, youthful harmony in the intricate weave of its chenin, grenache, roussanne, chardonnay & viognier make-up. Satiny texture, concluding pithy grip and dimension. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2015 RED WINE 2014 FABLE MOUNTAIN NIGHT SKY RED, WESTERN CAPE Y5700B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £156.00 Red cherry, fynbos and cinnamon spice are displayed on the nose and mirrored on the palate. The palate has soft red berry fruit, fragrant tannins and a smooth, lasting finish. Drink 2019-2021. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer Platter’s Wine Guide: Elegant, intricate 2014, mainly shiraz, grenache with splash mourvèdre. Convincing, firm build filled with fine-tuned, fresh flavours - spice, red fruits - creamy texture, both promising to unfold & fill out with ageing this deserves. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 11
RICHARD KERSHAW finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 WINES Prices are quoted by the case in bond Elgin but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Born and raised in the UK, Richard Kershaw moved to South Africa in 1999 and, by 2009, was Group Winemaker of Mulderbosch and Kanu. He became a Master of Wine in 2011 and left his previous position to set up his own project, Richard Kershaw Wines, the following January. His intention is to create site-specific, cool-climate wines from high quality French clones of the Chardonnay and Syrah grapes. His site, in one of South Africa’s coolest wine districts, Elgin Valley, benefits from the higher altitude, proximity to the ocean, specific cloud cover sequencing and large differences in day and night temperatures, all of which allow his Chardonnay and Syrah to show a true sense of place. The climate leans toward Southern Burgundy and the Northern Rhône, affording Richard’s wines a surprisingly “Old World” feel. They are extremely impressive, a fact recognised by John Platter, who awarded the first vintage of his Chardonnay (2012) a straight 5/5 stars, a feat that was to be immediately repeated with the following vintage. Now, Richard has also been awarded 5/5 stars for his 2013 and 2014 Syrah – bravo! Richard’s wines are available exclusively from Berry Bros. & Rudd in the UK. WHITE WINE 2015 RICHARD KERSHAW CLONAL SELECTION CHARDONNAY, ELGIN Y5746B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £132.00 Spice and flint on the nose are layered with citrus pith and lemon-cream. The attack is brisk and leads to an elegant, scented palate. There is a hint of grip, with the oak completely integrated and contributing to a texturally very fine wine (an antithesis to the broader-shouldered 2014). Fresh and very, very long. Drink 2018-2021. Stuart Rae, Commercial Manager (Private Accounts) Platter’s Wine Guide: A masterpiece of understatement & harmony; precise, classy - delicious too! Maximal taste from minimal intervention. Scintillating 2015 interleaves white pear & oatmeal tones, but gorgeous as the fruit is, the real beauty is in the gossamer texture. 4.5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 RED WINE 2014 RICHARD KERSHAW CLONAL SELECTION SYRAH, ELGIN Y5747B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £132.00 This Syrah is incredibly pretty – high levels of white pepper spice and minerals marry with cherry and graphite notes. The acidity is bright and the tannins fine-grained. Crushed petals combine with crunchy berry fruit on the attack, leading to fleshier fruit. Drink 2019-2021+. Stuart Rae, Commercial Manager (Private Accounts) Platter Wine Guide: Allspice & white pepper nuances to focused, iodine-tinged dark berry fruit of seamless 2014, the epitome of balance & refinement. Exhilarating 2013 was quieter in youth than 2012 debut, but savoury/umami notes & tempered tannins are consistent hallmarks. 5/5 stars, wineonaplatter.com, October 2016 12
CRAVEN finewine@bbr.com 01256 247 900 Stellenbosch Prices are quoted by the case in bond but exclusive of VAT and duty. Wines are expected to be shipped between January and June 2017. Craven is a collaboration between husband and wife team, Mick and Jeanine Craven, who met in 2007 while working a vintage in Sonoma. After working around the world, they decided to settle in Stellenbosch, South Africa, establishing Craven in 2011. Inspired by the region’s eclectic terroir, they set out to make site-specific wines, with a non-interventionist and “less is more” attitude – allowing the grapes, and the vineyard, to speak for themselves. So far the results are incredibly impressive and this certainly looks set to continue. The estate typifies the “new wave” attitude – fresh, textured, complex wines that hold one’s thoughts but are also eminently drinkable. RED WINE 2015 CRAVEN FIRS SYRAH Y5937B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond £234.00 From a slightly warmer, inland site, this Syrah still possesses a lightness of touch. It exudes black fruit and classic pepper spice. The tannins are densely packed and the acidity is bright and fresh. Iodine and sweet bramble drive the focused finish. Not your usual Stellenbosch Syrah, it is far more elegant and restrained. Drink 2018-2020+. Katherine Dart MW, Buyer 15
