wines of the month Smooth sips for winter suppers WAKEFIELD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015 Clare Valley, South Australia 744235 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2 TASTING NOTE: Sweet berries punctuated by delectable tang. Smooth yet lively, with suggestions of blueberry, strawberry, vanilla and mint. Attractively priced for the quality. A fine, silky cabernet from cool-climate Clare Valley that’s fit for grilled-steak season, or for cellaring up to five more years. Food Pairing: Grilled steak. Seeing a slightly longer elevage than the Tessellae cuvee and spending 14 months all in demi-muids, it gives up lots of spice and sandalwood characteristics, as well as more black cherry liqueur, chocolate and dusty, rock-like minerality. Hedonistic, textured, rounded and downright sexy, it’s another terrific wine from this estate that readers should snatch up. It should dish out tons of pleasure over the coming 4-5 years. FRANK Product Consultant I’ve been working at the LCBO for 34 years, 10 as a Product Consultant. Being of southern Italian descent, wine has always been about family for me. UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018 CHÂTEAU TOUR DE PEZ 2008 RHÔNE Cru Bourgeois, AC Saint-Estèphe TASTING NOTE: Relatively soft for a St.-Estèphe, ALAIN JAUME CLOS DE SIXTE LIRAC 2015 this nevertheless has plenty of firm tannins to project AC the powerful fruit forward. It has structure and TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Lirac Clos de Sixte weight, piled with plum juice and acidity. Great aging comes from an appellation that shares a similar potential. Cellar Selection. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, terroir with Chateauneuf du Pape, yet is located just Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2010 ) across the river, on the western side of the Rhone. It’s a serious, large scaled, voluptuous effort that has Medium-bodied & Fruity lots of ripe tannin, a [big] mid-palate and copious 530048 (XD) 750 mL $44.95 2 amounts of blackberries, black cherries, scorched earth, licorice and roasted herbs. One of the bigger boned and concentrated reds in the lineup, it will have a decade of longevity. The 2015 Côtes du Rhône la ALBERT BICHOT ROCHE GRANIT Source is a full-bodied, ripe and beautifully fruited JULIENAS 2015 effort. It has fabulous purity, lots of black cherry, AC currants, peppery herbs and licorice aromas and TASTING NOTE: Wines from the Juliénas cru are flavors, and full-bodied richness that never comes known for their minerality, floral character and tannic across as heavy or cumbersome. Made from 85% structure. This one also shows dark cherry, plum, Grenache and 15% Syrah, from a higher elevation underbrush and a nice touch of spice. Pour with mild parcel (I’m guessing near Vinsobres), destemmed cheeses and smoked ham, or beef-and-winter- and aged in stainless steel, it’s a smoking value! vegetable stew. Again, the value here is about different grape varieties, or even from blends – a as good as it gets. At the moment, all of the Crozes rarity in Burgundy. This one brings together Pinot Hermitage releases share a lot of similarities, but I’m and Gamay and shows tart red cherry and roasted sure they’ll show more singular characters with herbs wrapped in fine tannins.
