The College Symbols There are three key symbols of Rockland Community College that express the history and tradition of the College. The special occasion of Commencement is distinguished by the use of these meaningful symbols. The Chain of Office The Presidential Chain of Office of Rockland Community College consists of ten frames, alternating with round links made up of concentric initials “RCC” and displaying the map of Rockland County on the right side of the circle. Each of the frames illustrates one of the ten academic programs and carries in the center a globe flanked by olive leaves, indicating the College’s contribution to world peace through its strong emphasis on community service. The front of the chain shows the frames for the Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, Engineering, Performing Arts, Nursing and Natural Sciences programs, and the pentagonal medallion depicting the College Seal. The medallion also pays homage to the community that Rockland Community College serves, with the green acrylic representing the County colors and the rocks flanking the pentagonal frames depict the beautifully-rugged Hudson River shore line. In the center of the back of the chain is a shield showing the map of Rockland County surrounded by an engraved inscription and five rays, which are symbolic of the Business Administration, International and Criminal Justice programs. The chain was designed and made by Kurt Matzdorf, Professor Emeritus of Gold and Silversmithing at the State University of New York College at New Paltz. The Seal The Seal of Rockland Community College brings together the relationship with the State University of New York. The gold plated State University of New York seal surrounded by the inscription “Rockland Community College” shows the heritage of the school. The Mace The ornamental staff, which serves as the official symbol of Rockland Community College, is a gift from the Rockland Community College Foundation. The Mace symbolizes the College’s governing authority and is only used in proceedings that have official sanction. 10
The Mace was designed and crafted by silversmith and sculptor Harold Schremmer of West Warwick, Rhode Island. It is a study in diverse and contrasting wood, metals, texture and color. At its crown is a bronze medallion displaying the Rockland County seal on one side and the New York State seal on the reverse. Beneath the crown is a sterling silver glove with a ring of thick metal letters spelling “Rockland Community College, 1959.” The wood staff is sculpted from decorative Purple Heart wood in a non-glossy oil finish. The Mace’s counter balance is of copper and bronze in a dark patina. The segmented form was designed to convey the feeling of the original medieval mace design. History of Rockland Community College A look back at the history of Rockland Community College reveals an institution that has grown deep roots in the community for more that half a century. From its inception, Rockland Community College was envisioned as an institution that would serve all of the residents of Rockland County, but in particular those who, for a variety of reasons, lacked the opportunity to pursue higher education. Based on the doctoral thesis of Ramapo Central School District Superintendent Lester E. Rounds, and through the work of the Rockland County Community College Committee, the College became a reality in 1959. Sponsored by the Rockland County Board of Supervisors, approved by the State Department of Education and supported by local and state funds, Rockland Community College’s first students attended classes in the former Rockland County Welfare Home (now the Administration Building – Brucker Hall). The College’s responsiveness to the community was reflected in the variety of courses, schedules and mix of students when it opened its doors on September 30, 1959. Some students were homemakers with children to care for. One was a woman who had never completed high school because she had lived in Africa during her teens. Of the men, seven were beyond “traditional” college age, some were veterans and some were disabled. A few were recent immigrants who had completed high school equivalency requirements. An additional ten-percent of that class was comprised of students who had withdrawn from four-year institutions. As is underlining the word community, the initial schedule of day classes was promptly expanded to include evening and weekend classes for a working adult population every bit as eager to learn as the younger “traditional” student. Today, that same prompt recognition of, and response to, student interests and needs remain the hallmark of Rockland Community College. In addition to the main campus in Suffern, the College offers a conveniently located opportunity at the Haverstraw Center, home to the 3D Printing Smart Lab and Business Services Mall. RCC recently opened the Herbert Kurz Automotive Technology Center in Orangeburg to offer specialized career training in a state-of-the-art facility, and a 11
Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center in Nyack, incorporating the newest ideas in the culinary arts. The newly created Career Skills Academy gives students an opportunity to “Start, Change or Enhance” their career. The College offers a wide variety of programs to serve the needs of the local population, including: Continuing Education; English as a Second Language; the acclaimed Honors Program; and a wide variety of technologies for students wishing to upgrade existing skills or learn new ones. Starting with a full-time enrollment of 139 men and women who risked a new and untried school more than half a century ago, Rockland Community College has become a focal point in the educational, cultural and economic life of the region. In the best and truest sense of the word, “Community” remains its middle name. 12
