SIXTH FORUM FOR YOUNG PERMAFROST SCIENTISTS - Current Challenges and Future Prospects for Geocryology – Commemorating 100th Birthday of Evgeny M. Katasonov and Nina P. Anisimova June 29 –July 13, 2021, Yakutsk, Russia FIRST CIRCULAR Evgeny M. Katasonov (1921-1988) is a prominent Nina P. Anisimova (1921-2011) developed permafrost scientist whose pioneering research laid the cryohydrogeochemistry as a new subdiscipline in foundation for cryolithology. The cryofacies method permafrost science. She was the first to investigate the developed by Dr. Katasonov is widely used to reconstruct chemistry of fresh and mineral groundwater springs in the depositional environments, mechanisms and the middle Lena River basin, as well as to scrutinize the processes of permafrost formation. He elaborated fundamental controls on groundwater and ground ice criteria for identifying and classifying syngenetically chemistry in permafrost environments. She advanced frozen ground. Particularly significant is Katasonov’s the hydrochemical method to gain new insights into the theory of permafrost existence in Siberia throughout the formation and dynamics of water-bearing taliks, the age Quaternary period. He also found that Pleistocene of thermokarst lakes, and many other important issues. continental sediments contain cryostructures which Dr. Anisimova established several monitoring sites in develop if the frozen substrate is at shallow depths. Over central Yakutia for long-term hydrochemical 27 years (1961-1988) he led the Laboratory of Frozen observations. Concurrently, she conducted laboratory Quaternary Sediments at the Permafrost Institute in investigations of chemical migration in sediments and Yakutsk. ice at various boundary temperatures.
Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to the Sixth Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists (FYPS-2021) to be held in Yakutsk, Russia from June 29 to July 13, 2021. This event is open to early career researchers under the age of 39 years, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates. The previous Forums (http://mpi.ysn.ru/index.php/en/fyps.html) were hosted by the Melnikov Permafrost Institute in 2018, 2015, 2013, 2010 and 2008, attended by young researchers from across Russia and abroad (CIS, USA, China, Japan, and France). In addition to traditional topics, the 2021 Forum will focus on emerging new areas of geocryological research. 1. GEOCRYOLOGICAL CONFERENCE Current Challenges and Future Prospects for Geocryology June 29 - July 2, 2021 The conference will be held at the Melnikov Permafrost Institute in Yakutsk, Russia. Themes - Regional and historical geocryology - Permafrost hydrogeology and geochemistry - Climate and permafrost geothermics and thermal physics - Permafrost engineering Languages: Russian and English Paper presentation: oral and poster Time for oral presentation: max. 15 min. A poster session is planned during the conference. All accepted abstracts will be included in a proceedings volume and made freely available at the Russian Scientific Electronic Library (https://elibrary.ru) and the FYPS-2021 website. Pre-Registration Those interested in attending FYPS-2021 (conference and/or field workshop) are requested to fill in the pre-registration form and send it by email to vnmf2021@mail.ru before December 15, 2020. Conference Fee The conference fee is paid onsite at the conference or can be done via bank transfer to the Melnikov Permafrost Institute's account. The conference fee will be 1 000 Rubles. In case of additional funding support, the fee may be reduced or waived.
2. FIELD WORKSHOP Cryo-Deserts-2021 (July 3 – 13, 2021) The field workshop will be held in the Vilyui River valley, central Yakutia. Lectures will be given on the following modules: lithology of frozen sediments, periglacial landscapes, groundwater in permafrost, river systems in permafrost regions, and lake systems in permafrost terrain. Participants will learn the following field methods in application to permafrost: terrain survey, sedimentary facies analysis, groundwater survey, geophysical methods, drilling in permafrost, and thermal measurements. Trip Schedule July 3 – departure from Yakutsk to the town of Kysyl-Syr July 4 – boat trip to Makhatta Tukulan July 5 -8 – field lectures in the eastern and northern parts of Makhatta Tukulan July 9 – boat trip from Makhatta Tukulan to a yedoma exposure to Kysyl-Syr Tukulan July 10-12 – field lectures in Kysyl-Syr Tukulan and its vicinities July 13 – travel from Kysyl-Syr to Yakutsk by bus. Field trip route.
The Makhatta Tukulan dune field (63°54´ N, 122°32´ E) is located on the northern side of the Vilyui River, 10 km north- west of the town of Kysyl-Syr. It covers an area of 214 km2 and consists of parabolic dunes. Along with wind-blown sands, the dune field contains lake, creek, tundra, steppe and forest (scattered pine stands) ecosystems. Supra- and intrapermafrost water springs are abundant. Makhatta Tukulan.
The yedoma exposure (63°56´N, 122°52´E) is located 10 km north-east of Kysyl-Syr down the Vilyui River on its left bank. The exposed part of the fluvial terrace is 65 m high and consists of Cretaceous sandstone overlain by Quaternary alluvial (channel and floodplain facies), cryo-aeolian and yedoma deposits. Yedoma exposure along the Vilyui River.
The Kysyl-Syr Tukulan Dune (63°54´N, 123°16´ E) lies 25 km north-east of Kysyl-Syr, in a valley setting on the right side of the lower Vilyui River. It has an area of 19 km2. Gemorphologically, it is a high-order dune of composite structure. Quaternary sediments are exposed along the 3-km long and 35-m high bluff, consisting of alluvial (channel, scour and floodplain facies) and aeolian units, a continuous paleo soil horizon, a paleo depression with buried peat, and buried trees. Seeps of supra- and intrapermafrost groundwater are observed. Kysyl-Syr Tukulan. Workshop Fee The field workshop fee is to be paid separately and is estimated to be approximately 10 000 Rubles (including meals). It may be reduced in case of additional funding.
