Simon de Senlis Primary Weekly Update – 18th June 2021
  Dear Parents and carers,
We have enjoyed such wonderful weather over the past few days, however what a difference a few hours makes as we now
are forecast rain for the weekend. If we are fortunate to have warmer weather in the coming weeks, please do remember
to send your child to school with a named sun hat, water bottle and have had sun cream applied before they arrive.
After the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday regarding the further Covid restrictions not now being reduced, we
remain in a position where our usual summer activities will look different to normal. We will be holding Sports Festivals
for each year group in the final full week of term (dates of which are on the following pages), however I am sorry that
parents and carers will not be able to attend these events due to Covid-19 restrictions. The festivals will be a great
opportunity for the children to work together in teams, along with individually, to showcase their sporting abilities. Unlike
typical Sports Days, the festivals will not be competitive but will be a celebration of sport using the Tokyo Olympics as a
theme.
If your child is in Year 6 or joining SdS next year in Reception, you will have seen that many of the planned transition events
have either been cancelled or adapted in-order to adhere to the Covid-19 restrictions. Children within school will still be
able to complete their transfer visit to their new class to get to know their new teacher on July 5th. Please be reassured
that all staff will continue to do all they can to ensure these transitions are effective and are able to support your child at
this exciting, yet sometimes worrying time.
This week, as usual, I have been so proud to see the continued hard work and determination from all of the children across
school. Their drive to succeed is evident across all areas of the curriculum and their joy of learning is tremendous. Well
done to all the children!!!
Please enjoy a lovely weekend, keep dry and I look forward to seeing you next week.
    Mrs Fennelly

                         Transfer Day
The whole school transfer day will take place on Monday July 5th. On this day, your child
will spend the day learning in their new classroom and getting to know their new
teachers and teaching assistants. On that day you will drop your child off and collect
them from their new classroom door. Timings for drop off and collection will be the
same as your child’s CURRENT times.
You will find out the class that your child is in and their teacher for September on
                                           Friday July 2nd.
More details regarding the logistics of transfer day will also be added in later on this
                                                day.
For more information regarding supporting your child with transfer to their new class
and year group, please see the suggestions on the following pages.
If your child is in Year 6 and is not attending a transfer day at their Secondary school on
July 5th, they will come to school as usual on that day.

Ways to support your child with transition
It’s that time of year again where we start to think about children moving on to a new year
group or transitioning to a new school.

This can be a time of great excitement but also may cause some anxiety for children as they
can have some worries around the changes ahead.

Over the coming weeks the teachers will be talking to the children about their transitions and
there may be some children who will need a little extra support with this.

One strategy we use in school is ‘red and green thoughts’ and this is something you can do with
your child at home about any worries they may have regarding the changes ahead.

This is a very simple strategy which can be used for a range of worries to help build resilience
and problem solving skills.

Ways to support your child with transition

A red thought is the worry that your child has and the green thoughts are the positive steps to
counteract this. For example a red thought may be, “I won’t know my new teacher.” and the
green thoughts could be:
• All of my classmates will be with me and they are meeting them for the first time too.
• I moved class last year and I had a new teacher and everything was ok.
• My new teacher will get to know me and I will get to know them. Everything will be ok.

If your child has any particular worries about transition please speak to their class teacher in
the first instance or a member of the pastoral team.
                                     Many thanks, Mrs Holland

The Big Bee Challenge is Radio 2’s new competition for children. It’s a fun and creative way to
learn more about bees and other insects that help provide much of the food we eat, and are
essential for a healthy environment.
If you are between the ages of 6 and 12, we want you to design a bright, buzzy garden that will
attract bees and other pollinating insects. The winner’s design will be built by the RHS at an NHS
Trust site which is used by children and young people with mental health needs.
The lucky winner will be invited to open the garden at an outside broadcast of The Zoe Ball
Breakfast Show on Friday 20 August 2021!

Whilst the weather is warm and sunny why not take art outside to try painting with ice! It can get messy so please wear an apron or
old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Here are some instructions to help you.
You will need:
- 1 cup of water
- Red, yellow, green, and blue food colouring
- Lolly pop sticks (optional)
- Ice cube tray
What to do:
1. Pour water into the ice cube tray
2. Add just a tiny drop of food colouring to each cube and mix well
3. Place a short popsicle stick into beach ice cube and place in the freezer until frozen
4. Pull on the sticks to remove from the tray
5. Lay old newspaper down on the table before you paint, as food colouring will stain
6. Hold the wooden sticks to paint with – if you don’t have sticks to use move the ice cubes with tongs or use
washing up gloves to protect your skin – food colouring stains!

I would love to see photos of your work, please up load them to the Art and Craft Club Teams Page. If you would like to be part of the
Online Art and Craft Club please do email info@simondesenlis.org.
Keep creating!

Do you want to learn to play an instrument next year?

Mr Bickerdike, our brass teacher, is offering some free taster sessions over the next 3 weeks for children who would
like to learn to play a brass instrument next year. These are offered free of charge to get a feel for the lessons, but with
the intention that you would carry on learning and playing next year.
The cost of tuition for the year is £220.00 for 11 sessions per full term = 33 lessons for the year. If your child is in
receipt of Pupil Premium, you will receive funds towards these lessons.
If you're not sure what instruments are involved in the brass family, you can watch this video here.
