Stick mixers – 100% removed 2. Milk frothers – 100% removed 3. Deep fryers – 100% removed Polystyrene packaging has been reduced overall by 3,037m2, which represents an 11% decrease (from 27,880m2 in FY13 to 24,843m2 in FY14). 9. Reduce reliance on printed materials in favour of Target on track: alternative electronic mediums Work has been undertaken to investigate Target: opportunities to reduce paper used to produce • 10% reduction in paper used to produce Breville instruction books via: Breville instruction books • Reducing total written content • 10% reduction in paper used to produce • Reducing large headings Breville warranty cards • Removing solid colour and blank pages • Rationalising the inclusion of recipes An initial sample of 6 instruction booklets were rationalised saving an average of 40% in length (pages). This represents the upper limit of potential savings. Further savings of approximately 20% can be achieved by removing recipes and putting them online. Some consideration has been given to reducing paper used to produce Breville warranty cards via: • Including warranty information in instruction books to reduce reliance on cards (possible and will be further investigated in 2015) • Rationalising content (not possible). Further work will be undertaken next reporting period. 10. This will eliminate re- wrapping when loading into outgoing freight trucks, which should ultimately help reduce the volume of shrink wrap used per volume of product moved (note: total volume of shrink wrap used is subject to the state of the business and volume of product moved). 13. Continue to report product to packaging ratio for Target met: product sold into the Australian market Total ratio (proportion of packaging weight to overall Target: Product to packaging ratio remains steady or product weight) has decreased from 15.3% in FY13 to improves by portfolio 14.5% in FY14. This represents a reduction of 276 tonnes of packaging: • Beverage: ratio improved by 4.33% • Food Prep: ratio improved by 1.15% • Cooking: ratio up by 0.93% • Kambrook: ratio improved by 0.71% Products require different degrees of packaging protection therefore this overall figure will be influenced by changes in the overall mix of annual product sales. 14. Consider alternative measures to monitor packaging Target met: improvements Total ratio (proportion of packaging weight to overall Targets: product weight) has decreased from 15.3% in FY13 to • Environmental attributes of packaging 14.5% in FY14. Describe any constraints or opportunities that affected performance under this KPI Much work has been undertaken to research and in some instances test different packaging alternatives. Transition to more sustainable packaging options have in some instances been constrained by: • Technical feasibility • Meeting timelines to launch • Inability to meet stringent Breville drop test standards • Cost when alternatives are significantly more expensive than existing • Limited availability of the packaging in countries where Breville products are manufactured; and • Counter-productive environmental outcomes, i.e. switching to recyclable alternatives which increase total packaging volume and weight and further increase shipping and transport space requirements.
Goal 2: Recycling KPI 3: % signatories applying on-site recovery systems for used packaging. 15. Do you have on-site recovery systems for recycling used packaging? Yes at all facilities/ sites Yes at some, but not all facilities/ sites No 16. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI 3 Target: According to your Action Plan, what did you set Actual: What did you achieve? out to do? 1. Recycling bins for mixed containers (i.e. bottles, cartons, jars and cans) are identified via a dedicated light blue bin with yellow lid with images of co-mingled containers. Recycling collectors have reported only once where contamination of the recycling stream was found. A company communication was issued to reflect this and alert staff. There is no way to record recyclables in general waste as this is not broken down via the collector. 2. Investigate opportunities to recycle waste polystyrene Target partially met: and flexible plastics Opportunities to recycle waste polystyrene and Target: Company recycling improved by 5% by flexible plastics at Botany have been investigated and recycling flexible plastics found to be inefficient and cost prohibitive. • Collection was via a 5m³ bin with $20/m³ + transport costs. The site cannot accommodate a 5m³ bin • An onsite polyfoam processing machine would cost $700/mth With the increased phasing out of polystyrene from packaging, the volume of collected polystyrene is reducing. Flexible plastic recycling is working at the Minto warehouse facility which is evident by the increase in plastic collection and reduction in general waste.
3. Waste and recycling database developed and Target partially met: maintained Total onsite waste and recycling is monitored. In the Targets: 2014FY: • Waste and recycling data gathered and • Total waste to landfill decreased by around 8% analysed quarterly • Total pallet waste decreased by 26% • Company recycling rates monitored and • Cardboard and office paper waste decreased reported by 43% • Estimated packaging recycling rates captured • Metal waste decreased by 63% • Plastic waste recycling doubled • Hard container recycling diverted over 2 tonne for recycling • New organic waste recycling service diverted around 0.5 tonne of organic waste from landfill 4. This is a very small proportion of returned product protection packaging by suppliers goods.
3. Develop process to optimise packaging for transport. Target partially met: Target: Opportunities to reconfigure product transport Transport routes and packaging have been reviewed for better pallet optimisation, without losing and some changes implemented. economies in container shipments research and documented QLD, Vic, SA and Tas deliveries are volume filled and trucks are 100% utilised. In NSW, NT and WA there are now shuttle runs between the Breville warehouse and transport depots and slip sheeting has been introduced to reduce shrink-wrap usage. However this method has reduced the optimum transport space configuration as stacking is not possible. It should be noted that with the warehouse move to Minto the distance between warehouse and freight depots has reduced from approximately 70km to 30km. Note: slip sheets are 100% recycled plastic. Sheets are utilised approx. 30 – 50 times before being replaced. No wooded pallets are used for this transport mode. 24. Action: Phase out polystyrene packaging, where Target complete: possible, to reduce potential kerbside litter issues associated with wind-blown litter Company success phasing out polystyrene is reported in KPI 1. Packaging alternatives Target: (Refer actions 1.7 and 1.8) implemented are mostly recyclable and less likely to result in wind-blown litter due to careless disposal of the packaging by customers. 29. Describe any constraints or opportunities that affected performance under this KPI Breville packaging will rarely end up in the litter stream.
