Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 26, 2020 Dear Parishioners of St. Raphael, There has been plenty of news on the topic of Religious Freedom in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the US Supreme Court announced two decisions defending the rights of Catholic organiza ons. The Li le Sisters of the Poor will not be required to pay for abor on or birth control services for their employees. The other decision said Catholic schools can choose their teachers free from government regula- ons. Both of these decisions were welcomed by people of faith. The United States Council of Catholic Bishops issued statements praising them, but also urg- ing us to stay diligent in working for religious freedom. The fact that both cases had to go to our na on’s highest court should be warning enough for us. The US Cons tu on includes religion as one of the inalienable rights our ci zens have. "Inalienable” means a right that precedes any decision of the government, pro or con. It is some- thing that should belong to us simply by our existence as human beings. If we need the Supreme Court to remind the na on about that, there has already been some misunderstanding. And yet as Americans, we should be thankful for the freedom we have enjoyed, since not every na on enjoys the same. In other countries around the world, religious minori es have been persecuted by a ma- jority or by government power. In the case of China, the government itself is an -religious, or at least non-religious. There have also been recent cases of serious vandalism against Catholic churches, or against statues of religious figures. Statues of Mary and Junipero Serra have been destroyed, and a number of churches have been set on fire. As I write this, the great Cathedral in Nantes, France has been badly damaged by a fire, and arson is suspected. And this comes while the great Notre Dame Cathe- dral is s ll being repaired from a fire last year. We could possibly dismiss these cases as part of an overall lawlessness. It only takes a few disturbed or destruc ve people to cause serious damage. Any reasonable person should know that a peaceful protest does not mean damaging someone else’s property. But mentally disturbed people usually act alone, in isolated events. The repea ng pa ern we have seen lately is not just the work of a few deranged loners. We can consider these events as a warning: don’t take the rights we have for granted! As Ameri- can ci zens, we should respect the religious rights of all people. But most obviously, that includes our own rights. In God’s love, Fr Ma hew Kowalski
