The Goldwing Way - Newsletter Editor Notes gheidt1@shaw.ca H:403-343-0885 C:403-872-0885 Hello everybody! Hey what a great day to ride to Bearberry!! Sunday, July 21 was our "annual meetup" with chapter AB-A (Calgary) for lunch, and what a successful turnout. Ten bikes and fifteen riders left Red Deer in two groups with a stop at the Shell Station in Sundre before heading on to the Bearberry Grill and Saloon. This was another free punch card ride adding to the fun! High score was Vicky J. and low score was Irene H. each winning a $10.00 A&W gift card. We were happy to see four more AB-C members already there adding to the great turnout and it wasn't long when nearly just as many AB-A members rode in! On the way home we stopped at Spruce View for ice cream and a bit of tire kick'n before the groups dispersed onto trails home, the last three bikes made a sporadic decision to stop at Timmy's. It was noted how nice the Alberta farming landscape is right now with the colours of our bountiful crops - making it an extra pleasant day for a ride! Huge shout out to Al & Caryl for generously treating our AB-C convoy for lunch, gosh what a nice surprise! To the very capable Road Captains and Tail Gunners, thank you for keeping us safe on our journey - it's why we ride; that's the Goldwing Way. Miles of smiles, Glenda

So he took the snail and threw him as far as he could!! Ten years later the old man heard a tap tap tap on his window - and when he looked up he saw a very cross snail who looked at him and said: "Hey, "what did you do that for"?
MY MOTORCYCLES My first motorcycle was a 1969 Suzuki 350 cc Rebel dad bought it from Cec Head at the Red Deer Lock and Key. I couldn’t legally ride on the street because I was only fifteen, so I rode it up and down the back alley until I got my license. In 1972 I spotted a Honda 250 cc dirt bike at Turple’s so I traded in the Suzuki for my first Honda. On the way home after making the deal I got hit in the front end by a driver who cut the corner, as luck would have it, it was right in front of Eventide Funeral Home. The funeral director witnessed the crash he came out and picked me up and made sure I was ok, so we pushed the bike back to Turple’s and I waited for my new bike to be ready. In 1977 I decided I needed a bigger bike and Glenn had a beautiful red Honda 750k Four sitting on the showroom floor, I had them install a fairing, saddle bags and backrest. That fall I made my first ever long road trip, all the way to Midland, Ontario. The trip down took five days most of them in the rain the fourth day in Northern Ontario the temperature was only 45 degrees F wasn’t carrying the right clothes for that temp, the rest of the trip was beautiful with nice temps and all the fall colors. When I got back, I took the bike in for a new chain as it was stretched badly and guess what Turple’s had a blue 1978 Goldwing on the showroom floor calling my name so I traded up. Over the winter I added a fairing, saddle bags, touring trunk and a stereo. For holidays that year I decided to go back to Ontario but somewhere between Grande Prairie and Red Deer the starter quit. Upon checking with Turple’s it was going to be a two week wait for a new one, but Ivan figured if we disconnected the head light and got a battery charger, I should be able to make the trip. I could run about eight hours on a fully charged battery also the bike still had a kick starter. Made the trip down and back with no other problems, I left the bike at Turple’s and flew back home to Grande Prairie. On my next days off I flew back to pick up the bike before winter, the bill was $396.00, $96.00 for the starter and $300.00 to install it. In 1982 I saw a gray Goldwing Aspencade with matching Honda fairing, saddlebags and travel trunk so I traded up. It looked kind of plain, so I had Turple’s add lots of lights and safety chrome. In the spring of 83 while doing a turnaround at the Wimborne Mobil Oil Gas Plant I met Jamey Ehrman from Torrington. He and his friends had wings and were members of the G.W.R.R.A. Calgary Chapter A. He talked me into joining but going to their meetings made for a long day. Over the winter of 83/84 we found there was enough interest in starting a Central Alberta Chapter, so in the spring of 84 Chapter AB-C was formed. In 1986 Dennis Brown and I went to Expo 86 in Vancouver it was a great trip even though my
navigation skills were off a little. I sold the 82 to a member in Coronation that fall. At the insistence of Grover and Lorrette Verbunt that I needed another bike in 1988 I bought a used fully dressed black 86 Aspencade. The black with all the chrome and lights looked nice but was hard to keep clean so in 89 when a member offered to buy it I sold it. In the fall of 1993 Terry at Turple’s said I should come down and see the new 1994 Teal Blue Aspencade that had just arrived. Over the winter Gord ordered my list of accessories and come spring I picked up a fully dressed wing and a color matching Tiny Mite tent trailer. I kept this one until 2001 when Wayne and Charlotte Anderson decided they wanted it more than me. In 2016 I was told that Turple’s had a new 2015 40th anniversary Goldwing for sale at a good price even though it wasn’t in my favorite color (blue), it was too good a deal to pass up. So now I ride a Red and Black 40th Anniversary Goldwing. 2015 Honda Goldwing 40th Anniversary Edition
Father's Day Ride to Camrose - June 16/2019 It was reported that this was a great day! Milt commented that there aren't too many mornings in June when he can leave home at 8:20 am wearing a mesh riding jacket with no liner - 16 degrees in the morning and 23 degrees 334 kilometers later! Nine bikes and eleven riders made the circle stopping in Bashaw, then on to Camrose to enjoy lunch at Hagar's Café in the Norseman Inn. Linda R. highly recommends the restaurant, saying the food and service was excellent! Thank you Milt and Wayne for each supplying some photos. ***Rest stop in Bashaw at the Esso*** ***Destination Norseman Inn, Camrose***
Ride to Pioneer Acres, Irricana - June 23/2019 268 Km under threatening skies. 5 bikes rode down to Pioneer Acres at Irricana to have a look through their exhibits. The site is large, and the various buildings that house the exhibits are far apart. Unfortunately the restaurants aren’t open in Linden, Acme, Irricana or Crossfield on Sundays. Fortunately the bar in Carstairs served lunch.
Interchapter Ride to Pine Lake, June 30/2019 Another great day in Alberta. Riders from chapter AB-C rode north up to Ponoka and met six riders from Edmonton (AB-B) before joining together and riding back south for lunch at the Pine Lake Golf Course. Several members from Calgary (AB-A) were waiting for us when we arrived as well as more AB-C members. Approximately 21 riders were at the table for lunch. A great day and a great visit with friends.
Ride to Drumheller, Hand Hills, Delia July 14/2019 Another great ride, in spite of the weather forecast. The day started out with a few clouds and ended totally overcast. We made a circle through Big Valley, Delia, Drumheller (for lunch) Rumsey, Trochu Delburne and home. We encountered water bugs between Rumsey and Trochu and we stopped at the GTI service station in Trochu for a couple of riders to put on their rain gear. Gareth and Russell suited up and carried on north, Dave, Debbie, Robin, Donna and I decided to wait for a bit while a storm front passed over. Glad we did as it poured down hard for about 10 minutes. There were a few more water bugs as we left Trochu, but we were back on dry pavement before reaching Huxley. 375 Km for the day. Milt Sorensen

Prairies District Directors Report Hello to all Prairies District Members, Well it’s finally here, the new Canadian Prairies District upper rocker. Thanks to your District Team and especially Tracy Boyda, we are now able to present the upper rocker to replace the Region J rocker that we presently have. The cost is $31 and you can let your Chapter Directors know if you are interested in placing an order for your vest so that we will have them to you by or before the District Rally in August. The numbers are rolling in for Prairies District 2019 Rally being held in Moose Jaw, SK. August 16 th – 18th. with 91 members registered as of June 26th. If you haven’t yet registered, it’s not too late. You can find the information on the District Webpage at http://www.gwrra-prairies-district.ca/index.php/district-rally. Also remember Wing Ding 41 being held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee. There are a lot of exciting things happening at Wing Ding which includes vendors, seminars, bike games, GWRRA Official Store, Bike Night, 50/50’s, a Draw for a New Goldwing Bike, entertainment nights, costume contests at a theme night, and dinners just to mention a few. This resort includes 15 restaurants, an indoor pool, two outdoor pools, an 18-hole golf course, and 9 acres of indoor gardens with a boat ride available. The resort is also the largest non-casino hotel in the continental US and one of the largest hotels in the world not to mention it has 105 ice cream machines. So if you have never attended a Wing Ding before, as you can see, there will be something for everyone whether a new member or a seasoned member. Wing Ding 41 is a bound to be a magnificent time; the resort, the excitement, and the Gold Wing reunion all under one roof. Remember that it is volunteers like yourselves that make this a great organization. Every member has their own personal touch to bring forward and there is a personal satisfaction of holding a Chapter or District position. Until next month, Gary and Susan Premech Prairies District Director

Musings from Milt "Ramblings of an Old Mind" I found this timely, because today I was in a store that sells only sunglasses. A young lady walks over to me and asks, "What brings you in today?" I looked at her, and said, "I'm interested in buying a refrigerator.” She didn't quite know how to respond. I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener. I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it. I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age and calling it 'Pumping Rust.' When people see a cat's litter box they always say, “Oh, have you got a cat?” Just once I want to say, “No, it's for company!” Employment application blanks always ask who is to be called in case of an emergency. I think you should write, ‘An ambulance.' The older you get the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement. Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL. Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. Ah! Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable. Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth. "May you always have Love to Share, Cash to Spare, and Friends who Care".
