Introit ‘In War…’ by Malcolm Arnold Sung by St Faith’s Choir with Jonathan Lush Camps (trumpet) to words by Sir Winston Churchill “In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity In Peace: Good Will.” Introduction The Rector of Havant, Canon Tom Kennar, introduces the service Hymn Words: John Ernest Bode (1616-1874) Music: THORNBURY by Basil Harwood (1859-1949). Tune 689 During which the Standards are laid upon the Altar 1. O Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.
2. O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self will; O speak to re-assure me, to hasten or control; O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. 3. O Jesus, thou hast promised, to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow my Master and my friend. 4. O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant my own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heav’n receive me, my Saviour and my friend. Opening Prayers Church of England Reader, and Chaplain to the Mayor, Sue Moss, leads the congregation in prayer... Heavenly Father, Grant that our remembrance this day may be consecrated for practical service, and the world made better for our children’s children.
All Receive our prayers for the well-being of all people, especially those who mourn, and all in distress, both known to us and unknown. Hear us for the peace of the world, for the wise resolution of conflicts, and the release of captive and oppressed people everywhere. All Grant that the people of the world may do your will and live in your spirit O God of Love, We give you heartfelt thanks for all you have given us so richly to enjoy; for health of mind, body and soul, for the love and care of home, for the joys of friendship and for every gift of happiness and strength. We praise you for your servants who, by their example and encouragement, have helped us on our way, All especially for those who gave their lives for the causes of justice and freedom. Grant unto all of us for whom they died the gifts of your Spirit, that their devotion may be seen in us All as we learn to grow in our love for others; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Bible Reading: Romans 8.35-end Read by Gunner Ale, of 16 Regiment A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Roman Christians Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter’. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. For the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God Gospel Reading: John 15: 9-17 Read by The Worshipful The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Rosy Raines A reading from the Gospel according to St John: Jesus said: ‘This is my commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you. No-one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. For the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God
Hymn Words: William Blake (1757-1827) Music: Charles H. H. Parry (1848- 1918) Hymn 33 1. And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among those dark satanic mills? 2. Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem in England’s green and pleasant land. Sermon Rev’d Canon Tom Kennar, Rector of Havant, Prayers Prayers are led by the Chaplain to the Royal British Legion (Havant Branch) Rev’d David J. Williams TD Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God give us peace. For the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered and known to God. (Silent pause for prayer & contemplation)
God give us peace All God give us peace For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss. (Silent pause) God give us peace All God give us peace For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return. (Silent pause) God give us peace All God give us peace For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity. (Silent pause) God give us peace All God give us peace For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace. (Silent pause) God give us peace All God give us peace O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us dignity as we pray for those who wish us harm.
As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and forever. All Amen. Gathering our prayers and remembrance into one, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen Hymn Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Music: ST ANNE. William Croft (1678-1727). Hymn 494 1. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home; 2. Beneath the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure.
3. Before the hills in order stood, the earth received her frame; from everlasting thou art God, to endless years to same. 4. A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; be thou our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home. Candles of Remembrance Candles are lit by representatives of all the assembled organisations while the organ plays. Anthem: For the Fallen Words by Lawrence Binyan, Music by Douglas Guest Sung by St Faith’s Choir
Responding in hope and commitment Led by Canon Tom Kennar In the light of these candles, lit in token of the service and sacrifice of others, let us commit ourselves to responsible living, and faithful service. Will you strive for all that makes for peace? All We will Will you seek to heal the wounds of war? All We will Will you work for a just future for all humanity? All We will Merciful God, we offer to you the fears in us that have not yet been cast out by love: May we accept the hope you have placed in the hearts of all people, and live lives of justice, courage and mercy; through Jesus Christ our risen Redeemer. All Amen Corporal David O’Connor of 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Afghanistan on 24 October 2012. David’s funeral was held in St. Faith’s Church on 15 November 2012. His mother, Rosemary, gave this cross to St. Faith’s, made from shell cartridges by his Royal Marine colleagues, and it is displayed at the High Altar on Remembrance Sunday. This is one of many memorials to the Fallen at St Faith’s, including the standard of the Havant Volunteers (from the Napoleonic Wars) and the stained glass window to HMS Havant. The Lecturn used for all our readings is dedicated to Acting Captain John Philip Blake MC RM - killed in Action while serving with the 43rd Commandos, 2nd June 1944.
Hymn Words: Sir Cecil Spring Rice. Music ‘Thaxted’ by Gustav Holst During this hymn the standards are collected from the Altar and readied for final procession by being held aloft at the front of the Sanctuary I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; we may not count her armies, we may not see her King; her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
Blessing Offered by Canon Tom Kennar God grant to the living, grace, to the departed, rest, to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth and all people, peace and concord, and to us and all his servants life everlasting, and the blessing….
