Lavender Association of Colorado Thank you for the Journal. I've begun reading it and have found it very interesting. All is good here. We've had an incredibly hot and dry summer. We had the hottest August on record and had .07 of an inch of moisture total for June, July and August. Thank goodness for irrigation. We had the largest wildfire in Colorado's history just 20 miles from here which filled the valley with thick smoke for several weeks. It is now contained. However, the valley is once again filled with dense smoke from the wildfires in Utah and California, some of which are 1,000 miles from here. The fire near us burned 139,000 acres and the news reports that 2 million acres are burning in California. We had a high of 99 degrees F. yesterday and are to have a low of 39 degrees on Wednesday morning. Farms on the Eastern Slope are to see lows of 28 degrees with up to 6 inches of snow. If that happens, it will be one of the earliest recorded major snowfalls in state history. I am looking forward to some cooler weather though hope we avoid frost for several more weeks. I love my fresh tomatoes, cantaloupes and peppers. Just so you know, the United States Lavender Growers conference has been moved to January 2022 due to COVID. We've been spared from large numbers of COVID cases in our county and have had 4 related deaths in a population of approximately 125,000. The economic fallout from the restrictions placed on businesses due to the virus has resulted in a couple of our members going out of business. The restrictions have been particularly hard on small businesses. We've also been impacted because of less tourism. We are hoping a vaccine will be developed so that life can resume in 2021 in a more normal fashion. I hope things are settling down for you and your members in regard to the virus. Thanks again for the Journal. I hope the upcoming lavender season is a success for everyone down there. News from Warratina Lavender Farm Spring at Warratina in the gardens looks amazing. The daffodils are tossing their trumpets & the magnolias are in full bloom. Typical Spring we have had severe winds, creating a lot of tree mess around the farm. The ground is drying out after a very wet August. Weed spraying, mowing lawns & spreading trace elements are all happening. Our soil analysis provided us with useful information indicating we needed to apply potash, potassium & a little sulphur. Hand weeding under lavenders continues & keeps me fit. Our Shop & Tea Room remain closed. We continue to sell our products online & developing new strategies to be announced in the next newsletter. Enjoy the longer days, colour in the garden & the lavenders slowly coming out of their dormancy. Cheers Annemarie Manders Cuttings from McLaren Vale Lavender There comes a day in August when the cold grip of winter seems to have relaxed; you step outside to sniff the air and sense a definite change, a delicious surge of Spring. The trees are still bare and officially spring is some weeks away, yet there is a discernable change in the air. A softness in the breeze maybe, or is it the heady sweetness from moist earth drinking the sun’s rays under a deep blue sky? Such a day was last week, I put my face to the sun and closed my eyes for a moment to take it all in. The distant sound of children’s voices echoed across the valley and somewhere a dog barking. Across the creek on the upper paddock I noticed the black angus cows have reappeared and were grazing peacefully. They are a beautiful sight, their black coats standing out in the rich green pasture making the most of fresh grass before it disappears in October, not to be seen again until next year. Oh yes, spring is just around the corner and our winter of discontent during this extraordinary year, is now behind us. Imposing on this tranquil sight, from behind me came the steady growling sound of a Tiger Moth biplane. Not unpleasant, more a hum that increases in pitch as it gets closer or accelerates to do a turn, as it always seems to do over our place. It comes from Aldinga Airport just down the coast from us and always reminds me of the scene from the film Out of Africa, where Meryl Streep is soaring across the blue sky with Robert Redford as her pilot, the wind in her hair….. I mentioned this to T once and instantly regretted it, when he subsequently presented me with a ticket for a joyride on my birthday. When I realized it would be just me and the pilot and could expect “the whistle of the wind in the wires and the buffeting of the slipstream in your face,” not to mention “a little ponderous in roll and marginally stable in pitch with a tendency to sway her tail if not kept in check”. I simply didn’t have the courage to do it. Some things are just left to the imagination aren’t they.
Back to reality I had spent the morning preparing the lower bed ready to plant some Lavandula angustifolia munstead. We decided to replant back in June when early rains showed so much promise for a good season that had me singing in the rain. Come late July/August when we could reasonably expect more showers, our early optimism turned to disappointment as the days rolled by without further rain. T’s daily weather forecast became an irritation when it confirmed no low-pressure systems coming our way. Having cleared and prepared the lower bed, the soil had become quite dry and so we turned on the drippers and left the planting for another day. In the meantime I cleared the last of the woodpile with a good bonfire and shouldn’t have mentioned it to T, because he set about loading another trailer load to bring down for burning, and reckons I should be able to get one more bonfire in before the fire ban comes on. It goes without saying, 2020 has been a year many of us won’t forget in a hurry. For the first time in the 50 years of Reed Gift Fairs, we were sadly forced to cancel our Melbourne August fair and we know many in the retail industry are doing it tough at the moment. As a way of giving back to the community we have been so lucky to be a part of for the past 50 years, we’ve pushed forward with bringing you one of our oldest traditions – the Big Book, only this year we’re bringing it to you in digital format. That’s right, we bring you 200 pages packed with 246 supplier profiles, exhibitor videos, expert advice, premium product features and in-depth interviews, to ensure that you can find your next bestsellers, without ever leaving the store! CHECK OUT THE BIG BOOK! Stay tuned over the coming weeks as we highlight new products and features and draw your attention to some leading wholesalers innovating in the face of adversity.
