Message from the President As I write this we are now towards the end of July in what has been one of the most unique sum- mers in the 80-year history of Saddle and Sirloin. The Board and Management continue to navigate COVID guidelines and are doing our best to provide a safe and open environment for our members. While this virus continues to spread throughout our town, I do kindly ask members to continue to fol- low the protocols we have established in the barns for everyone’s safety. We have been very fortunate that none of our members or employees have contacted the virus and we would like to keep it that way. Even though many of our regular activities and events have been disrupted this year, I want the membership to know that, as an organization, we continue to operate in a steady and stable manner. We are in the process of adjusting our budget to take into account the changes that we have seen in Food and Beverage and with the horse population. While we have lost out on some of our reve- nue-producing events, we started the year out in such a strong position we are currently in very good shape. We have very strong cash balances and have been able to reduce expenditures to match off some of the lost revenue. The short of it is we are very strong financially and we will continue to be so. We have a good cash position and we have upgraded much of our expensive equipment. We have no debt and our horse population is on the rise. Also, we have been fortunate to build our member- ship this summer with several new members. All in all, things continue to look good for our future! The new maintenance building is now complete and it looks great! This building allows our maintenance team to better store, maintain, repair, and operate our equipment. Furthermore, the replacement build- ing (replacing the one that burnt down earlier this year) is also now being completed. This five-bay building will allow us to easily keep all our valuable equipment inside and away from the elements. We now have a complete maintenance complex that is first-rate in terms of allowing our team to manage our property. We are set for many, many years to come. I think I speak for everybody when I say “outdoor dining” has been a huge hit! Credit to Ashley and Chef and the kitchen staff for making it work, and for Robbie who put up our lighting. The view and the atmosphere are great outside. I know it can get a little warm out there on some evenings, but with some shade, we can make it work. We should have some beautiful evenings late this summer and into early fall. Just this week we had our most recent event - the loss of some nice trees near the clubhouse. We were lucky that none of our buildings were damaged, but it must have been a pretty strong wind to take down the trees that fell. I was sad to see that the top half of the old pine tree snapped off too. As Summer winds down and we come into the Fall, let’s all hope that we can get back to our regular social activities and our full calendar of horse shows and events. Finally, I want to thank the Mem- bership for their patience and support during the past several months. We have the most unique club in Kansas City and it has been that way for 80 years now and we will all continue it into the future! Evan Howe 3
Around the Barn... We have several new members and new horses at the barns – be sure to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. Another reminder – please remember to get your winter sheets and blankets to the Equine Laundry. If you want them clean and ready when you want to use them, now is the time to get them to Kitty! Be aware that there will be equipment and Robbie’s crew working to address the storm damage out on the trails – this work could go on for the next several weeks. Please continue to use our spray disinfectant and the hand sanitizer provided at each station throughout the equine complex – if you touch it, spray it! We refill the bottles often, but if you need a refill, just let us know. Stay safe and healthy, Elise _______________________________________ Trainer Tip of the Month-Controlling Your Horse’s Body Good horsemanship includes the ability to move your horse’s body backward, around, and sideways, using primarily your legs. Contrary to popular belief, your hands are not a big part of controlling your horse’s body. To move your horse’s front end (turn on the haunches,) your legs hang straight down in what might be called “neutral” position -- don’t move your leg ahead of the girth. Squeeze and release the pressure, and your horse should rotate his shoulders around his hind end. To move your horse sideways to the right (in a side pass), drop your LEFT leg back approximately 2 inches (not very much), and squeeze and release the pressure. To move your horse sideways to the left, drop your RIGHT leg back, squeeze, and release. If your horse’s front end is moving but his hind end is not, move your leg back just a little bit more for the squeeze and release. To move your horse’s hind end to the right (turn on the forehand), drop your LEFT leg back two MORE inches (from the side pass position) and squeeze and release. To move your horse’s hind end to the left, drop your RIGHT leg back the additional 2 inches, squeeze and release. For each of these maneuvers, all that your hands do is keep your horse’s neck straight. Keep your reins even, keep your hands low and still, and apply even, gentle pressure on the reins so that he does not look to the left or to the right while he is side-passing, turning on the haunches, or turning on the forehand. To back your horse up, your legs are in the “neutral” position. Take hold of his mouth with even pressure on each rein, squeeze lightly with your calves, and your horse should back straight up; think of asking for the backup with your legs as if you were squeezing a tube of toothpaste. *Equine Events Due to the pandemic concerns that we are still dealing with, the Club will not be hosting the UHCA event scheduled for September 12-13. We hope to use that weekend to schedule a members-only cattle event. Stay tuned for details! We are still planning on the Equine Extravaganza to be held on October 22 – 24th. We will be publish- ing the classes and signup sheets by October 1 – they should be posted outside the Stable Lounge in the indoor arena. Shelley Howe and Peggy Bruce, the Ladies’ Fall Trail Ride bosses, are planning on on-property Ladies’ Fall Ride Event, to be held on Thursday, September 24th. (See enclosed registration forms.) Equine Extravaganza-SAVE THE DATES! October 22-24 What is the Equine Extravaganza? Equine Extravaganza is a 3-day event for members designed to offer learning opportunities in a wide variety of riding disciplines. Our own training staff as well as outside clinicians hold clinics each morning and afternoon in classes such as Horsemanship patterns, Trail, Trailer Loading, Gymnastics, Working Equitation, Obstacles, and more. In addition, “Lunch and Learns” each day present outside speakers during the lunch hour. How much does it cost? One fee of $185 covers as many clinics as you can handle each day, as well as the Lunch and Learns, which are considered as classes and include lunch. Riders may take either 1 or 2 classes for the price of $40 per class. What level are the clinics? Are they Western or English? Most classes are structured by the clinicians to accommodate novice, intermediate, and advanced riders in the same class, so classes are open to all levels of riders unless otherwise indicated on the signup sheet. Signup sheets also indicate how many riders are allowed into a particular class. Classes may be ridden in either Western or English tack and attire. What if I’ve never done a class before? Riders are urged to sign up for everything they would like to try, regardless of whether or not it is “your discipline.” The goals of Extravaganza are for riders to experience new classes, try new things, refine their skills, make new friends, and have a fun learning experience with your horse. How do I sign up? Signup sheets and schedules will be posted in a designated area (yet to be determined). We try hard to accommodate the choices of every rider, but signing up early is important. We have wait lists for every class, so we can determine whether or not we need to open an additional session. If you don’t know what a class is all about or don’t know if you should try it, talk to your trainer, to Mark, or to Leslie Dunn. They are also available via text or email to help you get signed up, especially if you can’t get there in person when signup sheets become available. There is also a “catalog” available with descriptions of every class – if you would like a copy, ask Jeff Henderson or Leslie. Stay tuned for further details on signup, course offerings, and Lunch and Learn plans. THIS IS A DO- NOT-MISS EVENT for all riders – one of the favorite events of the riding season! Leslie Dunn 9
Outrider News & Events You had to be there to believe it!!!! On one of the hottest and most humid days of July, 14 riders and 2 guests all agreed the morning ride hosted by Matthew and Susan Tullock was amazingly comfortable (almost cool). The 600 acres owned by Kenneth and Ann Baum afforded all the riders beautiful and varied riding through woods, pastures, and streams. Our thanks to Matt and Susan for their “behind the scenes work” and their gracious hospitality.
