SENIOR CENTER 4 PROGRAM OF THE MONTH Widow’s Support Group Widowhood is a journey. At first it must be endured. With support from friends, family, clergy, and caring groups, it can become a status to be experienced. Experienced doesn’t mean that all the heart mending is achieved. It means that a widowed person has accepted that change is necessary…and without acceptance, pain continues to be debilitating. Our purpose in the Senior Center Widow’s Support Group is for widowhood to be embraced. Our loved ones will never be forgotten, but with time and awareness, a widow can move into open-mindedness. This is a time when a widow can become more than she ever expected to be. New activities can be adventures. What new fun is possible? Who might be a new friend? Is there still a place for “purpose” in her life? And might a loving spirit be re-ignited? The group meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month when no holidays interfere. The facilitator, Judy Jennings, presents information from her own books and other well written books and articles. Expert professionals are invited to talk on topics especially relevant to single women: financial information, counseling, community resources and other topics. Judy strongly advocates a sense of gratitude and more so, A SENSE OF HUMOR. “We laugh regularly. It is a good medicine for the soul.” If this information generates questions, Laura Grissom can address any concerns. Or readers are welcome to contact Judy via her email: judyjennings@me.com.
