COUNTRY & DAK'ART INFO Senegal is located in West Africa and is the 34th largest country on the continent. It is a former French colony which gained its independence in April 1960. French is the official language, while Wolof is the most widely spoken language. Senegal is also a majority Muslim country, with more than 90% of the population practicing Islam. Dakar is the capital and largest city, where about 25% of the population lives. The city is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides, offering an abundance of beaches and beautiful waterfront views. It's a vibrant and fascinating city where the traditional/religious and the modern/worldly live side by side in relative peace. It offers many historic, cultural and artistic venues and is home to both Africa's largest statue - the African Renaissance Monument - and its largest Black museum - the Museum of Black Civilizations. We'll visit them both. The Dakar Biennale, popularly known as Dak'Art, is a contemporary art exhibition that takes place every two years and held at sites around Dakar. For 2022, Dak'art will be held from May 19 thru June 21, so our guests will have the opportunity to attend this fabulous affair, in addition to our many planned activities. The Petite Coast is one of Senegal's most popular beach areas and includes the coastal towns of Toubab Dialaw, Saly, Somone and Joal Fadiouth. Each of the towns has a different vibe and we'll visit and get a taste of each one. The Senegalese people are known for their “teranga", a Wolof word which characterizes the values of respect, community, sharing and treating the guest as the most important person in the world. It's a source of national pride and you'll find the name on cafes, hotels, and even the national football (soccer) team -- the Lions of Teranga. Come join us and experience some Senegalese teranga for yourself.
