Greetings from the President... Steven Brock Greetings! It is with great humility that I am privileged to serve the Second District Dental Society. I encourage each of you to become more involved in your profession by attending the meetings and activities of our compo- nent. It is a great way to get to know your colleagues! We are going to see Covid in the rearview mirror and move forward with some exciting events. We will grow stronger as a result. The SDDS will kick off our next event with a new dentists welcome re- ception. All members are invited and encouraged to attend. Please be sure to rsvp right away for this event. Please do not hesitate to call me or any of the other officers with ques- tions, comments, or suggestions. Organized dentistry has been good for all of us. He was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 2021 Mickey Dearstone James Wheeler is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Science at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Knoxville campus. He received his BS in 2007 from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and his PharmD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2011. He com- pleted residency training at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville from 2011 to 2013. Following residency, Dr. Wheeler spent 2 years on the faculty at Wingate University School of Pharmacy in Charlotte, NC, then in July, 2015, joined the UT College of Pharmacy faculty. He teaches drug information, medication safety, and pulmonary medicine coursework at UT and serves as the Director of Continuing Educa- James Wheeler tion and Professional Development for the College of Pharmacy. His research interests include the opioid crisis, interprofessional educa- tion, continuing professional development, and workforce development. She is a graduate of UT Martin and the Dental School at UTHSC in Memphis. Following graduation she and her husband, Booder, moved to the New York City area. She worked at an office in Manhattan while living in Hoboken, NJ before settling in Warwick, NY. She practiced there for many years until she and her husband decided to return to their Tennessee roots. She acquired a practice in the Farragut area of Knoxville in 1996 and remained there until her retirement from private practice in 2020. Dr. Barnes has served in all the officer positions for the Second District Dental Society and as an Alternate Delegate and Delegate to the TDA. She served as the SDDS Trustee to the TDA Board of Susan Orwick-Barnes Trustees for eight years and was the Liaison to the Board of Dentis- try for one year. She served as the Chair for the Council for the Annual TDA Meeting for several years. Dr. Barnes was honored to represent East Tennessee as an Alternate and Delegate to the ADA House of Delegates for 11 years. She is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Den- tists, a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the East Tennessee Academy of Dental Prac- tice Administration, and the South East Academy of Prosthodontics. She served as President to the SEAP in 2016. She received the Dr. Frank Boyer, Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the Second District in 2016. Dr. Barnes is happily married to her husband, Booder, for over 40 years. They have two daugh- ters, JoBeth, a Nurse Practitioner, and Dani, a General Dentist.
