La Dolce Vita on the Amalfi Coast September 6-17, 2022 Join Michael and Melissa with a select small group to discover La Dolce Vita on the Amalfi Coast. Be prepared to be captivated by the warm hospitality of the Neapolitans, layers of history, rugged coastline sparkling water and vertical towns. Starting out in the third largest city in Italy; Naples. We will spend three days discovering the many layers of the culture, history, and architecture of this bustling city. From our centrally located hotel in Centro Storico, we will branch out each day. Over the course of three days, we will discover the beauty and magic of Naples. We will start our visit with a walking tour of the city and major attractions. We will wander narrow streets exploring shops and cafes. Marvel at the layers of history as we visit the Naples National Archeological Museum, and explore the culture and life caught in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius of Pompei and Herculaneum. You will then have a free morning to explore the city. Whether eating pizza, sipping coffee at a sidewalk café, hiking the ruins of Pompeii, or exploring the Greek and Roman roots of the 2700-year-old history you are bound to fall in love with the vibrant city of Naples. By far the best way to explore the Amalfi Coast is as seafarers have done for thousands of years. On Saturday in the late afternoon, we will board our luxury yacht and settle in. Following cocktails, we will enjoy dinner on the deck while marveling at the sunset in Marina Di Stabia. As night descends and the lights of the city sparkle across the Bay of Naples. We will slumber on board our first night in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and be lulled to sleep to sounds of the boat and marina. For the next seven days we will ply the Amalfi Coast exploring the rugged shores, small bays and vertical villages aboard our private gulet, the Deriya Deniz. Our personal chef will prepare gustatory delights while the Captain safely navigates us along the coast. The crew will drop anchor in tranquil bays.
At each destination we will be transferred to shore in the tender stepping on to ancient stone docks ready to explore the small villages that cling to the cliff walls. Enjoy lounging on the deck as we travel between small bays, anchoring in warm clear waters with the stunning cliffs rising from tranquil beaches. Reading our favorite novel, swimming in crystalline waters or just marveling at the views of the surroundings us. Sitting quietly in the evening watching the sunset from the deck as we let our dreams take hold. Sailing from Marina di Stabia we will venture down the coast of Peniolsa Sorrentina around Punta Campanella and enjoying all that the Amalfi coast has to offer. Trekking up 1,000-year-old steps to explore the coastal towns of Positano, the jewel of Amalfi, and then on to the hidden treasure of Ravello. We will take the time to wander along the waterfront, taste local wines under lemon trees, enjoy seafood in outdoor cafes, visit historical sites and shop in small stores along narrow cobblestone streets.
Mid-week after a morning swim we will head to Island of Capri. We may visit the popular square La Piazzetta, Villa San Michele, Grotta Azzurra or ride the tram to the top of Monte Solaro for a vista view.
We will wrap up the week by exploring the Bay of Naples and visiting the island of Ischia where we can trek across open paths and visit hot springs.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS and FAQ’s You are responsible for booking your own airfare. Airfare will likely be about $800 to $1,500 per person. There are not any direct flights from San Francisco (SFO) to Naples (NAP). The Naples airport is very close to the city center. Combining a ticket to Rome (FCO) and then train to Naples tends to be the cheapest route. The train arrives in the city center. We encourage you to buy tickets early as this is a popular time of year and cheaper tickets, and better connections get booked quickly. Flights vary from 13 hours to 22 hours with one stop. Several airlines fly to both Naples and Rome including Turkish Airlines, United, Lufthansa, KLM, Swiss Air and Delta. If you would like to use a travel agent to book your flights, we suggest Sandra Marron at Millennium travel at (415) 898-7974. TRAVELING IN ITALY Passport: All travelers are required to have a valid passport. Please ensure your passport is current and will not expire for at least six months after the conclusion of trip (e.g.: Valid until at least April 2023). COVID-19 Requirements: To enhance the safety of our group all participants must provide documentation of vaccinations or documentation of recovery within 3 months of arrival. Additionally, each passenger is required to have a negative PCR test within 24 hours of arrival in Italy and a code for the duration of the trip. Details will be updated as we get closer to departure. All passengers are currently required to get a negative PCR test within 24 hours prior to their departure to the United States. We will arrange for this upon our return to Naples. Visa Requirements: Visas to Italy for US Citizens are not required for 2022 for stays less than 90 days. If you are traveling on a passport from another country, please check with the embassy.
Luggage: We suggest traveling light. Your gear should fit in a medium duffel bag (less than 20kg/44lbs) and small carry- on bag. Your carry-on should be less than 15kg/33lbs – we recommend using a duffel bag and backpack. Both bags should be collapsible for easy storage on the boat in smaller spaces. Do not bring bags with hard frames as they are difficult to stow. Gear: We have found that people often only use about half of what they bring. A great way to bring only what you use is to lay all your items out and reduce it by 50%. Lay them out again and then reduce again. Gear weight depends on weather conditions of course, but light weight clothing that is layered and wicks well to dry fast is essential. A good pair of comfortable walking shoes are essential as terrain may be uneven. Beaches tend to be rocky, and a good pair of water shoes are important. You should consider lightweight clothes that cover exposed areas without adding bulk or weight. There are a variety of lightweight pants/slacks, shirts/blouses that are UV protected. Sunscreen and hats are essential. A light jacket, or fleece is recommended for cool evenings. A light waterproof windbreaker or rain jacket is good for tender rides to and from shore. Men should bring long pants and women should bring a longer dress or medium length skirt and scarf or shawl to cover their head out of respect when entering churches. What not to bring: Different states and countries have different travel rules, regulations and considerations. If you have specific questions about an item, ask us. Some general items you should not bring are illegal drugs, weapons, hair dryers, expensive jewelry, pets, rigid suitcases, surf boards and dive tanks. Linens, towels and pillows are provided on the boat and are not necessary to bring. If you have questions, please ask. Considerations: The boat will have a variety of snorkel gear and water sports equipment. These items are included in the cost of the trip. Again, you are more than welcome to bring your own. Keep in mind that these items tend to be bulkier and heavier. A reasonable compromise may be to bring your own mask and snorkel and use the fins provided on board. Money: Italy uses the Euro. Current exchange rate is 1 Euro = $1.13 or $100.00 = 88.74 Euros. Vendors prefer small bills and in most large hotels there will be ATM’s. We do not recommend using the airport exchange Kiosks as they have exorbitant fees. ATM’s will have an English option screen. State banks are slow but give the best rate. There are several large banks in Naples. Be sure and check the rate on fees from your bank before you depart and notify them you are traveling. Banks are open Monday through Friday from 9:00-5:00, but close midday from 12:00- 1:30. Most banks have an automated queuing system where you get a numbered ticket from an electronic machine. Exchange houses are open longer and on Saturdays, but do not offer the best
exchange rate. In smaller towns there will be fewer ATM options, longer lines and often they run out of cash. Anticipate what you will need. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and stores. There may be a service fee for using credit cards. Outlying towns may not have ATM’s or accept credit cards. Many small shops, cafes and small restaurants prefer cash, and some may be cash only. All purchases have an 18% value added tax (VAT) built into the pricing. Mobile Phones: Cell phones are a ubiquitous part of today’s society. However, North American phones may not be compatible even if you buy a local SIM card. The best alternative is to use VOIP like Skype, or WhatsApp or buy a cheap second-hand phone once you arrive and purchase a temporary SIM card. Internet Access: We plan on limited or no access to the internet when we travel abroad and are always thrilled when businesses and hotels share their networks. Most businesses will have internet. Getting Around: Buses or Circumvesuviana (commuter trains) are the preferred means of travel around and between cities and may be the best way to get around. Taxis are charged by the meter for up to 4 people. Fares go higher for late evening travel. Be sure and ask for approximate cost from hotel staff. Tips are not expected unless the driver helps with bags. Safety and Security: The US state department provides a travel advisory for Italy as a 3 out of 4 which states “reconsider travel” because of covid and threats of terrorism. The UK travel advisory states “most visits are trouble free, but caution that “visitors should be vigilant in crowded spaces and avoid political demonstrations.” Medical: You should carry your own prescriptions in your carry-on bag clearly labeled. In the event of minor issues there are pharmacies with well qualified professional staff along the way. They carry many types of antibiotics that do not require a prescription. In case medical care is necessary we will provide assistance. Our experiences abroad have been very positive when the need arises. Hospital prices are usually much less than in the US. Most hospitals take major credit cards and travel insurance is available that includes reparation if needed.
