KELLOGG JOINT SCHOOL DISTRICT #391 SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH KELLOGG, IDAHO www.kelloggschools.org Statement from Board of Trustees: On February 10, 2021, we announced the position opening for Superintendent of Schools due to the retirement of our current Superintendent. We immediately initiated a nationwide search with the help of the Idaho School Boards Association. We look forward to finding the District’s next Superintendent to help lead our District in the best interests of our students, staff, and community. OUR MISSION In a partnership of students, parents, educators and community to ensure a safe, nurturing environment where people are challenged to achieve individual responsibility, academic excellence, personal success, and life-long learning. THE POSITION The Kellogg Board of Trustees is seeking a highly qualified, strong education leader to be the next Superintendent of Schools. THE DISTRICT AT-A-GLANCE Enrollment: 1,016 Employees: 125 classified staff, 69 certified staff, 6 administrators FY20 Budget: $11,430,000 Schools: KELLOGG, ID (2) Elementary Schools • Pinehurst Elementary • Canyon Elementary (science magnet) (1) Middle School (1) High School • Kellogg Middle School • Kellogg High School DISTRICT FUNDING • The only bond indebtedness the District has is a 2004 energy bond with a balance of $5,823,000. • The District has experienced strong community support for levies. • Passed a 2 year levy in 2020 for $2,985,400 with a passage rate of 63%. THE COMMUNITY Residents and visitors enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities in the Kellogg area. This includes ski resorts including the world’s longest gondola, golf courses, 72 miles of paved bike paths (Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes), Hiawatha bicycle trail, snowmobile and ATV trails, hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, zip lining, and much more. Additionally, the area includes a county airport and churches of many denominations, along with easy access to major airports.
OUR KIDS ARE WORTH WHATEVER IT TAKES OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS Here are a few of the many accomplishments of our students & staff: • US News and World Report selected Kellogg High School as one of the top 14 high schools in Idaho (2017). • Above Idaho state average graduation rates. • Multiple state Golf, Wrestling, and Track and Field Championships (Boys and Girls). • Century 21 after school program at Kellogg Middle School and Pinehurst Elementary School. • Involved in implementing PEAK Learning/Teaching for Excellence for 7 years. • Annual Scholarship Average of $16,660. • Tinker lab at Canyon Elementary Magnet School. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The key responsibilities of the Superintendent include but are not limited to the following: • Work with the Board of Trustees to promote the vision and mission of the District and help establish a plan to achieve stated goals. • Assist the Board in negotiations with the local educational organization. • The ability to manage and organize responsibly the District’s resources, which pertain to the areas of fiscal management, food service, and transportation. • Be familiar with facility needs throughout the District as well as knowledge in bonding and levies needed to address said issues. • Understand the importance of accountability in addressing staff, parents, students, and patrons of the District. • Skill in establishing processes of communication and collaboration with the Board, staff, and patrons of the District. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES In an effort to be transparent with the next leader of our District, we want to provide some of the potential foreseeable challenges: • Lack of state funding which creates situations where supplemental levies are needed. • Declining enrollment which affects funding. • Our District has an above-average number of special needs students. • Deferred maintenance needs due to lack of funding. • With this said, our next Superintendent will have a highly skilled staff to aid in addressing the challenges as we go forth in carrying out our mission.
THE COMPENSATION For the selected candidate, the Board will offer a salary range of BOARD $95,000 - $105,000 dependent upon experience, plus benefits, 250 day contract. OF TRUSTEES: THE QUALIFICATIONS • Valid Idaho Administrative credential with Superintendent Endorsement or eligible for licensure as a Superintendent in Idaho. • Todd Sheppard, Zone 1 • Masters degree required. • Bonnie Farmin, Zone 2 • Minimum three years’ experience as a superintendent or central office Chair or building administrator. Superintendent experience preferred but not required. • Sam Gibbons, Zone 3 • Administrator with experience working in small districts is preferred • Alexa Griffin, Zone 4 but not required. • Carolyn Turner, Zone 5 • Technologically competent. • Knowledgeable in curriculum and instruction as it pertains to Vice Chair common core. • Knowledgeable of pertinent state and federal laws. • Experience in budgeting and school finance.
