Scope of the Conference International Conference on Genome Biology and Host Defence: Bacteria to Mammals (GBHD-2019) will showcase and promote application of Next Gen sequencing and genomics technologies for basic and translational research in all areas of biology including human genetics, drug discovery, clinical medicine, biomarkers, diagnostics, animal, microbial, plant and agricultural sciences. It will also cover the topics on basic biology and the latest research on host defence. The conference is aimed at bringing together leading academic scientists and aspiring young researchers to exchange and share the most exciting developments in the fields of biological sciences, genome biology and host defence. The conference is planned to be held in Madurai one of the historical temple cities in South India, during February 27, 28 & March 1, 2019. It is envisaged that this conference would not only provide a unique platform to the participants from industries and academic institutions but also serve the purpose of global networking among them and help in creating a nucleus of interface research. AQUA-TERR Aqua-Terr In the year 1962, Professors S. Krishnaswamy and S. V. Job organized an informal club to discuss the latest advances in the field of Animal Physiology among their research groups. This entailed discussions of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms and was known simply as Aqua- Terr, since 1969, a forum for the students of the SBS to present their work on Friday of every week. As a testament to the visionary and pioneering leadership of Prof. S. Krishnaswamy in the educational and research landscape of Biology, Aqua-Terr as a research forum has been constant in providing a valuable open platform for the students to present and discuss their findings among their peers, as well as faculty of the SBS. This success was extended into annual celebrations of Aqua-Terr as a one- day conference on February 28, the “National Science Day”, celebrating the discovery of the “Raman effect” by Nobel laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/ 1930/). Since 2014, it became a two-day event. Since its beginning, Aqua-Terr annual conferences have become an important venue not only for showcasing the SBS research findings but also for invited speakers to provide new insights into their respective fields by way of inspiring the young researchers in Biology. The year 2019 constitutes the Golden Jubilee year: a milestone for Aqua-Terr. The "International Conference on Genome Biology and Host Defence: Bacteria to Mammals" is part of celebrating this important milestone.
School of Biological Sciences The School of Biological Sciences (SBS), Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), has its unique origin in the early 60's as a postgraduate extension centre of the Department of Zoology, University of Madras at Madurai. The founder and chief architect of SBS was Prof. S. Krishnaswamy, who later became the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University. When the PG extension centre became the Madurai University in 1966 (later Madurai Kamaraj University), Prof. S. Krishnaswamy, founded the Department of Biological Sciences. Just a decade later, the Department of Biological Sciences was elevated to School of Biological Sciences on the recommendation of UGC. Currently, SBS has 8 Departments namely Animal Behaviour & Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbial Technology, Molecular Biology, Plant Sciences and Plant Morphology & Algalogy. Since 1972 the UGC has recognized SBS for continuous support through several levels of assistance such as COSIP, DRS, COSIST, DSA (Phase I, II and III), Centre of Advances Studies (CAS) in Functional and Organismal Genomics (Phase I, II and III), Centre for Excellence in Genomics Sciences (CEGS Phae I and II) and Networking Resource Centre in Biological Sciences (NRCBS) (Phase I and II). The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India has recognized SBS for “Interdisciplinary Programme in Life Science for Advanced Research and Education (IPLS) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) recognized and supported SBS for FIST Programme (2002-2022) (Repeat Cycle I, II & III). Madurai Kamaraj University Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), established in 1966, has 20 Schools comprising 77 Departments, 21 academic centres, 98 affiliated Colleges and 15 Institutions. Madurai Kamaraj University offers 44 PG, 40 M.Phil, 57 Ph.D programmes and 17 Diploma/ P.G Diploma/ Certificate courses in various Departments. University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi has recognized MKU as an “University with a potential for Excellence”. Madurai: The Temple City Madurai is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. Madurai has a glorious past and a busy present with great temples that flaunt the architectural brilliance of the artisans.
