Black Hawk Fourth Grade and Staff Recognize World Down Syndrome Day On Friday, March 19, students in Mrs. Flanagan’s fourth grade class and several staff members recognized World Down Syndrome Day by wearing t-shirts in honor of Black Hawk fourth grade student Tucker Seffrood. World Down Syndrome Day is actually on March 21 (3/21) to bring awareness to the fact that individuals with Down Syndrome have three of the 21st chromosome instead of two. During the week leading up to March 19, Tucker’s classmates learned more about Down Syndrome and discussed the importance of appreciating one an- other’s differences. On March 19, Tucker brought cupcakes to school to share with his classmates. All in all, it was a wonderful day--one that Tucker, his family, and the Black Hawk school community will remember

Black Hawk FFA Thank you all who attended and donated to our Drive-Thru pancake Breakfast on February 28. We served around 200 meals. Also, we wanted to thank all of the students who participated in our FFA week activities and dress up days. Thank you to all the members who attended our FFA meeting on March 16. We had 22 members and guests present in our March meeting held via schoology conferences in the Black Hawk FFA Chapter group. We would love to see more participation in these meetings going forward as it has never been easier to access a meeting remotely. Just log on to the conference and be present for the chance to win a door prize. We are currently trying to figure out the kinks to our FFA Banquet. So keep your eyes peeled for updates. Good Luck to all who are attending the District Leadership Events on March 22, 23, and 24 hosted by Mineral Point. The Black Hawk FFA welcomes you to our FFA Alumni Consignment and Donation Auction on April 3rd at Powers Auction building starting at 9 am. Powers auction is located on 110 E Murray St, Browntown, WI 53522. For Lafayette County Fair Exhibitors-YQCA will be required this year for those that are showing and selling a meat animal at the fair. There will be upcoming classes offered in-person from the Extension Office, so watch for those to be released if you would prefer the in-person course. The online option is still valid as well, to be completed at your own pace. Identification tags for Sheep, Goats and Swine are available for pickup from the FSA Office building (Extension Office has moved into a part of that building now) located at 1900 Irvin Johnson Drive in Darlington. Up to 4 tags per exhibitor can be picked up, from the hours of 8AM - 4:30 PM. Other things to note on the fair this year: there will be a gilt show this year for the swine exhibitors, details are being worked out on that. You will need to identify the animal as a gilt or barrow on your paperwork when you submit entries. The gilts will show first, then will be followed by the market show and minimum weights are still 225lbs to sell that gilt. 2 swine per exhibitor will be allowed at the fair this year. That is a change from last year. The birds are chirping, the snow has melted and spring is in the air. Until next month, stay well! -Bailey Abney

5th Graders Learn About the Iditarod The last few weeks, the 5th graders have been learning about the Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. Students started off taking advantage of the snow and go out for some sledding. We read several books, including The Great Serum Race that shares the history of the Iditarod trail that was then used in 1925 to get a serum to Nome from Anchorage due to the diphtheria outbreak. Students also learned about some of the rules and regulations of the race, what they need to have with them on the sled, how the checkpoints work, and our favorite part--choosing a musher. Each student had a different musher to follow from the beginning to the end. This year, Eli Gee chose Dallas Seavey who was the 2021 champion. Channtum Drain chose Victoria Hardwick who was the winner of the Red Lantern Award. It was fun having some represent the mushers from beginning till end.
Black Hawk Girls Basketball Weekend Warriors Back in Action After having to take a year off, the Black Hawk Girls Basketball program is back on the court with girls in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade for its Weekend Warrior Saturday skills sessions. Participants learn foundational basketball skills, but they also learn about being good teammates and hard workers. We are so appreciative of the girls’ enthusiasm and their parents’ willingness to let them attend. These kids know how to BRING IT!

Riding the School Bus If you are relying on the Black Hawk School District for transportation to and from school, it is imperative that you understand the expectations and rules that go along with being on our school buses. Failure to comply with the following directives, WILL result in removal from the bus route. Transportation from school is not a student right, and a school district does not have to provide transportation for students. It is so important that you go over these bus rules with your children before the first day of school. 1. Be at your designated bus stop pick-up on time. The bus driver does not have to wait for you to appear. If the bus driver does not see students approaching the bus or waiting, they will briefly stop and place out the traffic stop sign. If still no appearance of student (s), the bus driver will continue onto their route. 2. All bus riders must wear a face covering onto the bus. No exceptions. If your student does not have a face covering, there is no guarantee that one will be available. If this is the case, the bus driver will notify the school, who will notify the families that they must provide their own transportation for that day. 3. Students are asked to only bring necessary items for school onto the school bus. 4. Food and beverages will NOT be allowed on the school bus. 5. Students will be given an assigned seat by order of pick-up and drop-off. This is to keep students passing each other on the bus to a minimum. 6. Students must absolutely remain seated during the bus ride. There will be no changing or jumping of seats on the school bus. 7. Students must keep their face covering on at all times during the bus ride. 8. Students are subject to the Black Hawk Schools Code of Conduct and Step System. Acts of harassment, bullying, vulgar language, abuse will result in students being referred to the building principal for behavioral consequences and plans.
